2/10 Terrible

We stayed at Santa Monica Proper expecting calm, design, and actual hospitality. What we got was one of the worst hotel experiences I have had in years.
Room 270 is in the so called “wellness wing.” The irony is brutal. The door is paper thin and directly outside is the wellness lounge. Housekeeping and staff were in and out nonstop, with doors that slam like a bank vault closing. This was not occasional. It was every 5 to 10 minutes, including between 11pm and 6am. Add staff walkie talkies bleeding straight through the door and you have a room that is functionally uninhabitable if you value sleep. I slept about two hours.
At 6am I politely asked for a room change. They promised a Grand King, which is only about $20 more than the Performance King. Fine. I did not ask for an upgrade. I asked for basic peace and quiet.
Then the room itself piled on. The bathroom window was completely off its track, leaving the bathroom like a cold plunge. It felt around 45F all night and into the morning. “Wellness” apparently means hypothermia plus noise.
Joanna at the front desk told us we could move after breakfast. When I returned, the story changed. Suddenly we could not move until much later. I called throughout the afternoon. No urgency, no proactive update, no priority given to a guest who did not sleep. We finally got access to the new room at 5pm. That meant we spent the entire day stuck in the loud, freezing room, unable to unpack because we were told we had to move. Wasted day.
