Marsden offers plush rooms at great rates. It was challenging to find (as it is within the Sofitel Hotel with no signage) but once there, we enjoyed the spacious room, comfortable bed and fantastic location.

The bed was comfortable and the tea was nice, and the check-in staff were friendly (although we had to wait quite a while to be met and escorted to the check-in desk which was not on the ground floor). Otherwise, pretty average really. All taps were really bad, very difficult (stiff or seized) to turn on and off. The shower hand set was broken, the TV was extremely slow to get anything and although the instructions said you could watch terrestrial TV, that was not an option. We tried to get a drink in the bar downstairs and even though there were people sitting in the bar, the waitress would not let us in, saying they were closed. This was at 10.30pm, i.e. not late. (Just in case you're wondering, we are presentable 65 year-olds, and were not inebriated.)

The linen and towels in our room were stained, and the towels were threadbare. The wallpaper was pealing in the bathroom and the tiles in the shower were cracked. My husband tried to iron his shirt: the ironing board was missing a spring and wouldn’t stay upright. The room was stuffy, no matter how high we turned up the cooling it was not comfortable. The only feature to recommend is how close it is the harbour; it was very convenient to get to the ferry and to Sky Tower.
