The Back Narrows Social Club is your Damariscotta river-view retreat for a sumptuous and relaxing midcoast Maine vacation! This unique property was actually the town social club in the 1930’s! In the ’70’s it became a mainstay of the Boothbay YMCA before being divided into two residential apartments in the 1980’s.

The location is minutes to area attractions like the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, the Maine State Aquarium, and the Boothbay Harbor, yet the Social Club is removed from the bustle of tourist noise, allowing guests to enjoy the best of both worlds.

Our dock in the Damariscotta River is a short walk around a bend in the street and down a neighbor’s driveway. You will have access to launch your kayaks, tie up your boat, or just dip your toes in the water and watch for seals!

The sizable kitchen is fully equipped, including specialty lobster and oyster utensils. There's plenty of seating and space for dining and relaxing after a day of fun. Outside you will find a grill, a dining space, and that beautiful river view.

Watch your little ones perform for an appreciative audience on the Social Club stage, take in sunshine and river views on the multiple decks and patios, read a book/work a puzzle/play a game in the River Room (also with river views, of course). Login to the smart TV and watch your favorite streaming services. There is also a BluRay player available (sorry, no cable/satellite).

Please note that this property does not have air conditioning. Due to the mild summers, absence of a/c is common in the region. When it's warm we usually turn on ceiling fans and open the windows and enjoy a nice breeze. We also provide portable fans.

The apartment features 2 full bathrooms, 3 bedrooms, and can accommodate up to six overnight guests.

Need more space? Book the entire Social Club as a two-story unit for groups up to 10. Smaller group? Check out our upstairs apartment! When rented by unrelated parties, the two units are completely private with separate entrances.

not up to par
The interior and furniture were outdated and very worn. The house was very humid. There was mold in the bathroom around the shower. Not enough seating in the living room area. Only one night table in the 2nd bedroom (we needed to bring in a dining room chair). The TV in the master bedroom did not work and there was no remote for it. There was an upstairs that was very noisy. There should have been noise restrictions on the unit. There weren't any bath mats. The kitchen was adequately stocked. The rooms weren't as nice as the pictures. There is no dock access as in the description. This rental wasn't worth the price that we paid. We have used VRBO many times and I can honestly say that this is the first time that we were totally disappointed in the rental.

Cockroaches, anti-family pricing, lurking owner
Owner asked us to pay for our two infants in diapers, citing septic requirements (for infants in diapers) which is a lie. Our options were to cancel with no refund or pay full price for 2 infants, effectively kicking us out of the property to find last minute accommodations. We paid rather than be kicked out with no refund. Property is infested with cockroaches (I have video). Owner was constantly present outside windows and in upstairs apartment with audible footsteps, giving no peace to us. Internet was non-functional and a tech was sent out during our stay. Another contractor came out while we were there to check something in the basement. There is poor access to the river (you must walk along a road with no sidewalks). Also, we were left with fewer properties to choose from because we wasted 2 weeks with a fraudulent VRBO listing that immediately texted us to pay a large security deposit via Venmo (VRBO admitted it was fraudulent). This is simply a property that was not worth the very high price per night. Save your money and find a real vacation rental.

Awesome Property
The property was GREAT. My sister and I took our 82 and 85 year old parents. There was plenty of room to spread out and they were able to navigate the 2 steps to get into the house. We had a puzzle going on the kitchen table and played games in the back room. It is in a very quiet location with beautiful views of the river and 8 minutes to the Lobster Wharf.

Perfect “no-stress” getaway that feels like home
My husband, mom, 21 year old daughter and 13 year old son enjoyed 4 days and 3 nights in this perfectly located home! Everything was within 15 minutes of the location! Host gave amazingly detailed information, house was comfortable and aided in amazing memories! You can see the river from everywhere and it’s quiet and clean! Only thing we struggled with was figuring out which light switches go to which light, but ended up making it a game!

Wedding stay!
We had a great time at the Social Club! Would absolutely stay there again. Matthew and Jill were very responsive and have a lovely place. The water view is incredible, but based on the description thought that water access was a bit easier. You have to walk by and between 3 other houses down a gravel residential road across the street. Additionally if you are taller than 6 ft, you'll have the shower heads from both showers below your head and have to duck below them to wash your face and hair. Aside from those things, I'd say this is one of the best appointed rentals I've ever stayed at. Fully stocked kitchen, plentiful linens and towels, and multiple fans to keep you cool on super hot days. Enjoy your stay! You won't regret it!

Nostalgia for days
I rented this property with my boyfriend and 2 kids. I liked the 3 bedrooms since we have a 17 yo and a 9 yo. It was such a great time. Matthew was very responsive to all of our needs. The towels, linens and kitchenware were some of the nicest I've come across at a rental. The house itself was an old social club and very unique. We loved our stay!

Beautiful River
It was the perfect peaceful vacation spot! We enjoyed the dock and were able to take our kayak out every day to fish, explore the island and watch the seals and birds. The downstairs of the house was perfect for our family of five, plenty of space for everyone. We loved the kid books, games and puzzles. The roads aren't great for bike riding, especially with kids, so those weren't used but luckily the mud room was large enough to store them.
