Firsly Id like to highlight positives about our stay. firstly that the staff were brilliant. All provided very good service. Especially Tom running the gin bar, he was very knowledgeable, and a young girl at breakfast with dark hair & glasses who was working so hard, and always was friendly and smiling.
Now onto the bad. The pictures listed on hotels.com show a building that is in fact the connaught hotel. This is a different accommodation to the connaught lodge. The connaught hotel is where reception, pool & breakfast is. the communal areas are very well presented in this building. The connaught lodge is actually in a seperate building which is very run down. when i say run down, i mean hasnt seen a lick of paint for at least 20 years. The whole building smells. There are sofas scattered around the hallways that are very old & covered in stains. We were originally allocated room 201, but we requested to be moved as the room was not nice. we were moved to 209, a much bigger room. But, the room is a health and safety nightmare. It stunk of damp, the bathroom was full of black mould. My partner has asthma and the damp plus mould made him wheezy. thankfully we were only staying 2 nights. Bedside tables have glass tops that arent attached, so could cause injury. The windows were mouldy and the handles barely stuff funcional. Bathroom handle was dodgy. There was wee stains down the outside of the toilet. No cold water in the bathroom only hot, not great when brushing your teeth.
