Texas Hotel Travel Guide

Plan your visit to the Lone Star State carefully; Texas encompasses nearly 270,000 square miles!

Visiting Texas

Texas comprises seven regions. The Panhandle Plains (Texas' northernmost section) is home to Abilene and Lubbock (home of Texas Tech University), as well as beautiful terrain, vast starry skies, and Western heritage. Big Bend Country is Texas' westernmost region and where the Rio Grande River divides the Texas-Mexico border. Don't miss Big Bend National Park, Marfa (with its eclectic arts scene), and El Paso (minutes from Mexico).

The heart of Texas is Hill Country, home to capital city Austin and the University of Texas' main campus; New Braunfels, popular for Comal River tubing; and the historic German-rooted Fredericksburg. Some of the best Texas resorts are in Hill Country. Farther south are the South Texas Plains, home to the border towns of Laredo and Eagle Pass as well as San Antonio. There, enjoy the Alamo, SeaWorld, and the historic River Walk. The Gulf Coast in the southeast features coastal cities including Galveston, Corpus Christi, and South Padre Island, as well as the state's biggest city: Houston. Many tourists stay in hotels in Houston and rent cars to explore the coast. Texas' largest cities have decent public transportation, but do yourself a favor and rent a car. You'll need it!

The Pineywoods and Prairies and Lakes regions in the northeastern quadrant round out Texas. Lufkin and Longview are cities in the lush, green piney woods, and the major cities of Dallas and Fort Worth are in the Prairies and Lakes region. "Big D" and "The Fort" are home to world-class museums, zoos, and botanic gardens. Check out Dallas' Reunion Tower and the Fort Worth stockyards.
