Most guests have a long list of activities, bring your out-door activity gear for hiking or kayaking, fishing gear etc. - but most guests tend to while-away their stay relaxing in the cabin and taking walks on my 11 acre mountain property. Although pets are welcome you are responsible for ANY added cleaning or damage. If your pet uses a "pee pad" please do not bring them to my cabin. House broken means they are trustworthy to hold it until you let them go outdoors. Your pet cannot be left to relieve themselves on my back porch. I can't believe I have to include this in my description but live and learn. There are two outdoor fire pits, one in front of the cabin, the other closer to the top of the property only steps from the cabin. Hiking is spectacular with the Appalachian Trail, Virginia Creeper Trail, National Forrest service trails among others minutes from the property.
The property is accessible via paved county road, and then long mountain driveway/private road. AWD, 4-wheel drive or front wheel drive vehicle is recommended to access in wet weather. Recent work on mountain driveway/private road has greatly reduced the evidence of wear and tear, including the addition of drainage ditches and tons and tons of gravel!! Typical rear wheel drive vehicle works fine, with possible issues during heavy rains. Mountain driveway/private road instructions will be forwarded with the Cabin and Property guide sent after you've booked. Check out pictures of driveway for a better idea of what to expect. Please note, ATV's, motocross and dirt bikes of any kind are not allowed on my property. If you are bringing atv's for use on designated tracks in the area, (Mountain City and Elizabethton) please leave on the trailer and do not run them on my property. Hunting is not allowed on my property.
The differences because of solar and off grid cabin are: moderated AC (available in main living space during daytime hours 10 am - 7 pm, no electric coffee maker (but a beautiful French Press that easily makes the best coffee) low but consistent water pressure with a delightful claw foot tub!) I make up for it in these ways:
During Summer and the really hot days the night temps are typically in the '60's - I open the windows to draw the cool air in using fans. During these days from 10 am to 7pm, I close the windows and drapes, turn on the AC window unit and keep the main living space comfortable. If the AC is run through-out the night, there will not be enough battery juice remaining to bounce back in the day to keep the system operating.
Slow water pressure. Just be patient, the system works, it's just not gushing. I have a deep, deep well that is State of Tenn. certified to be 99.9% pure mountain water. It's delicious, fresh and better than any bottled water. Just take your time and follow the instructions in the guide booklet for taking baths, doing dishes etc.
No electric coffee maker - there is a beautiful French Press. If you are unfamiliar - Google it, it makes great coffee.
It truly is a spectacular slice of heaven which I've taken over 25 years to develop on this mountain. The off-grid setup does not mean you are deprived of comforts and easy relaxation. It just means you'll need to get in the groove of the place and enjoy!!
This property provides a âgetawayâ location that is secluded and rustic. Sitting on the screened in porch is like sitting in a forest. The porch fireplace was a big hit for morning coffee and cool evenings. The cabin provided us with everything we needed to kickback and relax. We did explore the area around Abington and rode the Virginia Creeper Trail. We also spent time around South Holston Dam. The cabin provided us easy access to all.
My daughters and I had a wonderful time, and the cabin was exactly the way it appeared in the pictures. It is a quiet and peaceful cabin which is just what we wanted .
This is a very nice, cozy, private cabin. It has all you need for your stay. The cabin has plenty of windows so you don't feel inside all the time. The porch fireplace is great. The lake view from the hike up the trail is nice at sunset. I listened to the owls in the dark and the geese at daylight. Now it had rained for about 10 hrs before I got there, so I brought tire chains just in case. But I didn't need them. My extended cab, long bed, 2 wheel drive dually had no problems. I just put it in first gear at the start and drove up according to the instructions that were sent. At every switchback I just did the 3 pt turn and kept going all the way to the top. The driveway is really in good shape, even with all the rain. Coming down was just the same and easy. It was really a nice place to visit and unwind.
Cabin was exactly what we were looking for! Terry was extremely helpful with surprise flowers for my wife! Cabin was clean and had everything ready for us! Its was a great experience!
This experience was a nightmare! The pictures on Vrbo sight are totally different, driveway is washed out, no mention of that just steep gravel, post was not marked, outside areas not maintained and cluttered and dirty. Even spiders. Wood was wet so you could even get the fire going. The only thing good about this place was the bed. I booked 2 nights but only stayed 1 night because I was scared. The door looked like someone tried to break in at some point and owner said he doesn't lock the door. My car was damaged because when I saw the driveway I thought I was in the wrong place and being that it wasn't marked I went to another driveway. Which was the wrong one, I had to back up my car down a driveway. If the place was marked like he said it was I would have known I was at the right place from the start. Totally disappointed in this whole experience. I tried to contact host but because of no signal I was unable to.
The cabin is well maintained and very pleasant place to stay. Be sure to read the Host's manual, although he regularly checks in on VRBO to see how you are doing. Be sure to bring a vehicle that can handle the road leading up to the cabin. Although there is a wide spot where you can park and walk a bit. Very easy.Great place to stay; I highly recommend checking it out.
Iâm not sure if I overlooked this detail or just assumedâŠ.. this property has no air conditioning or heat, no shower just a bath with very limited water pressure. I would not have booked it if I knew there was no air. The host was on site so he was ready to help with whatever we needed.
For some one that is in recovery from triple by pass there are no railings for the steps,I had to use my family to get up the stairs. All the guniture was hard to get out of with having a pectoral flip done. The bathroom was difficult with everything being so low to the ground. I know it is not the property owner just would have been nice to know before renting. It is a great place peacful, lobed the fireplaces the outdoor fire pit was all fantastic property owner explained everything in the rules and guidelines
This is such a beautiful cabin. So rustic and secluded. Definitely recommend having four wheel drive to get to property, but other than that, it is perfect.
We booked this cabin for our anniversary only a few weeks before we would be staying so our cancellation window was only a few days. We know it was described as "off grid" and we read every detail making sure we'd be able to access it. Only a few days before our trip (outside of the cancellation window) we received an email with PAGES of additional information about the cabin and the drive that would have absolutely lead us to not book this property. The details about the drive were so intense that we emailed the host back to confirm if our front wheel drive sedan would even be able to make it. He never responded. After getting through all of the narrow, dark, mostly gravel roads we get to a hairpin switchback (where the host is staying in an rv) and had to try twice just to get up that initial hill because our tires were spinning out in the very rutted gravel drive. Then we have one more hill to climb to the actual cabin and after several attempts on this rutted gravel portion we couldn't get our car up! The host offered his car or us walking in the dark. None of which were options in the original listing. We are now fighting tooth and nail with VRBO because the host wont refund us even though he saw we couldn't get our car up the hill and we had to leave, completely change our anniversary plans, and book a hotel. This property is not accurate and the host is being dishonest.
We had a wonderful stay at Terry's property, even though we were there through Hurricane Helene. Because of the solar power, we were never without electricity, water, etc, despite the terrible storm. We were incredibly grateful to be in such a well equipped house to ride out the weather! Terry was unbelievably helpful when we tried to venture out after the storm passed, only to find three trees down over the driveway and one lane road into the property. He was there with a chainsaw within minutes of us calling him and he spent over an hour cutting up and moving the trees so that we were able to get out. We cannot say enough about his attentiveness and hospitality.
Despite the storm, we were able to enjoy Bristol and Abingdon, both of which are just a short ride away. We had delicious pizza from Machiavelli's in Bristol, BBQ from Delta Blues in Abindon, and we stumbled upon the Hoppy Possum Brewer's Festival, which was the highlight of our trip. If you have a chance to visit during this festival, it's a must do for beer lovers!
Terry's cabin was exactly as described in the posting. Its completely secluded, but with everything you need for a quiet, peaceful getaway. We never felt "off the grid" since we had electricity and cell service the whole time and were able to watch tv, use our hotspot devices, etc. Once the storm passed, we were able to enjoy fires in the fireplace on the screened porch, which was our favorite spot at the cabin. We will definitely return!
Owner was very positive and communicative. Listing accurately represented the accommodations. Very thorough fire and home documents sent describing the cabin before arrival. Even though it was summer, without air conditioning, the cabin stayed surprisingly cool. Curtains were vintage and a bit of a challenge to open. I personally felt nervous or a bit uncomfortable staying in what is clearly someoneâs regular residence. However, everything was positive and pleasant and we appreciate being able to stay. A lovely secluded cabin setting.
The cabin was lovely and clean, and the instructions, although lengthy, were very clear. We loved seeing how the solar panels provided enough energy, and the fans made the space comfortable in the heat. I loved that everything was covered up for the dogs. I felt very comfortable with my dogs being in this house.
We had a wonderful stay in Terryâs cabin. He was very accommodating of anything we needed and the experience was an absolute joy. We had our kayaks and enjoyed a day in Holston lake as well as some fun driving to and hiking at Backbone. Terrys cabin was great for our dog Lucy too. We cooked a few meals and all went into Bristol for some delicious bbq at Delta Blue and a concert in the square. Nights were spent listening to the woods and making smores. It is the woods so there are bugs! Be sure to read the description he provides, the driveway and hot water are tricky!
