Ruru Cottage - cosy native forest hideaway
Loose yourselves in the tranquility of the surroundings. A perfect place for a family or group of friends to relax together. Ruru is tastefully built in sustainably harvested native timbers and macrocarpa. It is snugly tucked on a stream confluence at the foot of Kahurangi National Park and enjoys a rich "dawn chorus" and "morepork" (native owl) song in the evenings. A great log fire warms you on cooler evenings and a streamside bush bath awaits you after your day walking, horse trekking or finishing the Heaphy Track. The local beach is only 300m down the road.
Special conditions: Dishes expected to be washed and put away. The stream is unfenced and young children need supervision. Smoking allowed outside only. No Pets allowed. Be aware of ladders to lofts. Shower and toilet inside but bush bath is outside beside stream. Washing machine. Mobile signals vary..may need to walk down driveway.
Beautiful setting lovely cabin cottage private. Close to everything we wanted to see. Outdoor bath was the highlight under the stars with the creek running behind us.
Perfect place to finish a week long 50th birthday fishing trip, beautiful little part of the world, would love to come back here with my family to enjoy the natural surroundings.
This is a real NZ bach - and the setting is refreshing and relaxing and very private. The two upstairs bedrooms are accessed by ladder - just great for a family holiday - kids especially would love it. There is a stream at the bottom of the garden and its sound along with the birds and the beautiful canopy of bush -sitting on the verandah - just makes this place perfectly aligned with the remoteness of the location.
Bach good very rustic .which we like a little difficult to find .good facilities clean basic bach stuff enjoyed our stay very much 6 Adults from Nelson
Very special wooden cottage set in quite large private grounds half surrounded by bush, stream running through.
Great location near Pakawau beach.
Well equipped for cooking, we ate in most nights.
Signage/communication could be better and a few worn cushions/outdoor chair covers could be replaced, a bit of paint here and there also needed.
We were after somewhere quiet to rest after hiking the Abel Tasman and this was a perfect base to explore the area. The house is private and quiet and surrounded by bush and the bubble of a small stream. It is a rustic cottage with comfy beds and all the kitchen items you'll need. We didn't miss tv and the wifi is patchy but that was fine with us. Pakawau Beach is lovely and a few mins up the rd. We left refreshed and relaxed and really enjoyed our stay.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Ruru cottage. The location is perfect for either relaxing in the garden, the beach or making trips and walks in the area. The cottage is well kept and cosy, even on a rainy day. Our hosts were very friendly and helpful, and we would be happy to come again!
We had a fantastic time at Ruru Cottage. We loved the private setting in the bush, a perfect place for relaxing after a day exploring and sit and read a book and listen to the native birds. The children had a great time playing in the garden and stream. Jonathan is a great host and provided us with all we needed and we will be definitely back. Thank you ,

Peaceful, comfortable bush cottage
this is a comfortable secluded get away place to regenerate and relax. It is in a great location, 250m to beach, bath walk out the back door, audience of this and bellbirds for your hot water on tap bush bath. Farewell spit close by and 15mins to Takaka.
Ladders to additional bedrooms are not for the old or very young, but we loved the attic rooms. Well kitted out with bbq and great verandahs for every time of day.
The owner is lovely and could not be more helpful.
Beautiful property located an easy drive away from Wharariki Beach and Farewell Spit. It had everything we needed, including a bit of internet (enough to check a few work emails and stay in touch with family). We really enjoyed the lofts and the view of the stars at night. The bush walk was a fun adventure.
