The property is very clean inside but the building itself and the lobby area could use a facelift. It looks rundown from the street. Since it is at a busy intersection in the city, it is not possible to keep the windows open at night. They did provide a fan which was so appreciated and necessary, but having air conditioning and black out shades would help tremendously since we stayed in the summer and it was hot.

Location was a short 10 minute walk via a lengthy pedestrian walk thru. Lots of restaurants and shops along the way. Transportation is right outside of hotel. Staff is friendly, especially housekeeping.

Clean, good value and convenient but drab exterior

Good, clean but a little tired interior and very drab exterior. The hotel is well located just a few minutes walk from city centre and infact only 15 - 20 from the main station. The hotel also gives guests (at no extra cost) a local train ticket giving free trael on train, bus , tram fir the whole local area as far as Dusseldorf in the south and Dortmund in the north. Buffet breakfast is good too. Other than the external appearance and the immediate vicinity..a good hotel.

Room was fine for 3 males i.e. 3 single beds ; adequate shower area along with a seating area coupled with a safe. Check in nice and simple , nice breakfast , short walking distance to main Essen train station.

The City-Hotel in Essen provides an all-inclusive experience: large room with extra seating, breakfast buffet, and , VERY convenient, complementary train tickets valid for the entire VRR region ( the VRR pricing is confusing and this is simple and saves money). Only downside is that I found the bed too soft.

Tired, but still good value

A cheap hotel by Essen standards, which is priced fairly. The rooms are tired but the bed comfortable and the breakfast good. The shower was good too, but the shower curtain didn't work - and several mentions to reception saw nothing done. Overall, good value for the area: and close to shops and metro.

Excellent location but it didn't feel like a 3 star hotel as claimed. Room was fine but they should at least have tea/coffee making facilities in the room. Staff were excellent and helped with everything I requested.
