Lyra - Kangaroo Valley
*April 2023 - Some exciting changes have been made to Lyra including painting the interior following consultation with award winning colour consultant Sonia Van de Haar of Lymesmith, installing new artworks, upgrading the interior furnishings and reinstating the organic vegetable garden. I hope you love the changes as much as I do.
Lyra overlooks the Barrengarry mountain range, midway between Kangaroo Valley and Berry. The house and entertaining area sits in the midst of 7 acres of undisturbed rainforest, serving as an amphitheatre for the lively birdsong of the Australian bush.
Mornings and early evening is a magical time at Lyra where one can sit back and watch the rich array of Australian bird life busy at work. The Lyrebirds are shy but vocal mimics, the Kookaburras are a bit of an eccentric observer and the yellow breasted Greygones are full of joy and curiosity (last time I was at home I watched a pair of Hummingbirds build a nest - absolutely delightful).
Lyra is a stylish hand-crafted post and beam mud brick home, hand-made from materials sourced from the rainforest. Much of the timber has been felled on-site and walls built from rocks and boulders found on the land. The large front living area, with its hand-made concertina doors, opens right up to the garden outdoors. The glass roof panels allow an unobstructed view to the sky lounging in front of the slow combustion wood fire. Firewood is provided all year round apart from in the heat of Summer. The back living room is a beautiful private spot for curling up into a good book or enjoying some TV.
The beating heart of Lyra, however, is its fully equipped kitchen and outdoor entertaining area. The outdoor area serves as a second, open-air living room, and comes with a large wood-fired pizza oven, dining table and sofas. The owner is a passionate cook, baker and entertainer. In this regard, you will have everything you need to create anything from a late-night toasted sandwich, pizza - from novice to chef, cakes, cookies and pies, a quintessential Australian barbeque, a traditional weekend roast; or a family favourite fried rice (please oil the wok after use). The organic vegetable garden is up and running please do help yourself to whatever is growing.
There are lots of serving platters and the owner has filled the kitchen with a collection of mid-century and vintage crockery and ceramics that she has lovingly collected over the years.
A good quality gas-plumbed Weber barbeque is provided.
Guests are sure to enjoy the heated outdoor spa and fire pit (bring your own wood or use fallen timber found on the property) where you can sit back and relax under the starlit sky.
The property has three private bedrooms with the main downstairs bedroom having a queen bed and its own ensuite. The two upstairs bedrooms each have queen beds and share the second bathroom. There is an extra powder room off the back living room.
Bed linen is 5 star quality - French Linen Duvets, 100% organic bamboo and/or organic cotton sheets.
Each bed is equipped with electric blankets and 100% Australian wool blankets for the winter months plus 5 star quality duvets through the year.
As the custodian of Lyra, the owner asks guests to honour the environmental tradition upon which her home was created by limiting single use plastics wherever possible exercising the discipline of thorough recycling. In this regard, communal pantry and bathroom basics are provided which you are welcome to use.

Please always keep the doors to the organic garden shut lest the critters help themselves!
Complimentary firewood is provided for use in the inside fire place except in the heat of Summer. If you would like to enjoy the fire pit and pizza oven we do ask that only rough wood self-sourced from the property is used. Additional fire wood can also be purchased from the petrol station and rural supplies store in Kangaroo Valley. The owner recommends selecting really good hardwood that is thoroughly dry for the pizza oven. She has had some disasters herself by accidentally using unseasoned damp wood or light wood. Petrol station firewood tends to be pretty light and provides a low temperature burn so donât skimp, come prepared with good wood and start the pizza oven 4 hours before use.
To keep Lyraâs outdoor spa clean and sanitised, the spa company come and service it each Thursday. They wont disturb you- will just service it and leave it ready for you to enjoy.
To keep the lawns mowed, paths tidy, gardens watered and weeded Lyraâs garden team come and work each Tuesday. The team are a professional group of young men, respectful of your privacy.
Lyra accommodates up to 6 humans. If you have little ones in addition to 6 adults please contact our office so that we help accommodate you.
I hope you love my home.

We had a lovely stay here enjoying the fireplace all nice and cozy, the beautiful grounds including lemons and herbs and the wildlife. Having a baby and toddler was safe so long as your mindful of the fireplace and stairs however you can lock the upstairs rooms so the stairs are inaccessible whilst night time. We would stay again!
Feel like you are in the forest in a beautiful home.
The house did not disappoint. Very well appointed. Nice touches around the place. Arty and comfortable with a feeling to just relax. An amazing view, secluded and warm. I can see is coming back again. We think this is the one of getaway that works in both winter and summer.
A fabulous property with a number of highlights...the hot tub, comfy beds and stunning view of the valley being right up there!
We took advantage of the outdoors, the dogs loved exploring the garden and the firepit was incredibly relaxing. The kitchen is really well equipped with all the baking equipment you would need...except for kitchen scales (the pizza dough was a disaster lol).
The only tip i would give other guests is to bring towels....the weather was cold and wet and with only 1 towel per person they just didnt dry.
You can tell the property has been a labour of love by the Owners and very unique and personal home with some beautiful craftsmanship throughout. However I was was disappointed, the photos on the site make the property look more luxurious than what you actually get. Unfortunately the weather wasnât kind and was very wet, we did utilise the spa BUT one thing that annoyed me was a lock had been put on the laundry cupboard so we couldnât dry any of our wet towels clothes and no hanging space anywhere for them to dry . Maybe if the weather had been nicer we could have utilised the space outside more which had larger dining table etc that wasnât really on offer in doors . The beds and sheets were luxurious and bathrooms clean with nice little touches . Overall it was a nice stay but I wouldnât book again .
Exactly as advertised. Comfortable cosy place with all amenities available. Unfortunately we had terrible weather so couldn't enjoy the outdoor entertaining area. Would very happily stay here again.
Also bed linen is amazing!
Easy check in. But when we got to the property it was obvious that the place was not cleaned properly.
* empty bottles in recycling basket
* kitchen drawers had crumbs, dried up sauce, dust, and dirt on plates
* the rug in the family room was dusty with lint and hair
* the freezer had ripped ice bag with scattered ice cubes
* the toilet bowl in the family room was stained with dry splatter of faeces (we had to buy a bleach & ended up cleaning it)
* dusty floor and dead insects
* courtyard was dusty and had flies. Not comfortable to hang and sit around.
At the end we ended up cleaning the whole place to feel comfortable instead of having a relaxing weekend!
Cleanliness is paramount particularly during the current COVID-19 pandemic. I am concerned that this practice was not strictly observed and managed in the property.
The property is at a good location. The views are nice. Beds were comfortable. Well furnished.
Overall okay stay, the cleanliness is biggest downer.
Lyra is the perfect getaway. Everything was perfect.
We had 3 wonderful days resting while our 17yo studied for HSC. Lyra was peaceful with birdsong waking us each morning. Close enough to Berry and Kangaroo Valley shops it was the perfect location to explore as well. Weâd definitely go back
Lyra is stunning. A beautiful house surrounded by bush and birdsong - we felt relaxed as soon as we arrived. The kitchen is outstanding, it has everything you could want. The outdoor area was beautiful and we enjoyed the sunset and some wine whilst heating the pizza oven. We also made use of the jacuzzi, which was nice and clean. The indoor fireplace kept us warm all night, and Fuffy, their resident cat is the sweetest girl. Thankyou for a very enjoyable weekend, we (2 adults and our dog) can't wait to return!
Hard to know where to start. Awesome! This is the place to go to connect with your inner nature/bush feelings. Loved everything about this house, its attention to detail and its outdoor settings. From listening to the Lyrebirds every day to a very affectionate resident Fluffy the cat who socialised well with our fur kids, just amazing! Our only negative was some minor teething problems with the tv and blown globes. We are already planning our next visit.
