East Mandalay Hotel - 62nd St.
I stayed at this hotel for only 1 night, and was glad of that. The hotel is unreasonably priced (USD 50/night) for what you get. It reminded me more of an old Chinese hotel in the way it was run, yet the building is fairly new. Maybe this is the standard for Mandalay. Taxi fare charges were not what the hotel desk quoted (always higher by KYT 5000). Since the hotel is located on 62nd/26th st. it is a bit out of the way of most hotels. A good restaurant is just down 26th toward the road to Mandalay Hill. Especially good was the outdoor pagoda with the 'Starving Buddha' just down 62nd St. at 30th St. This temple is not at 66th/30th or other locations other reviewers have said, but is at 62/30th Sts.(North east co rner). From the hotel you can walk (for a while) to Kutadaw and Sandamina Pagodas and the Golden Palace Monastery (the teak wooden building), and it is a bit of an extra walk up the staircase to Mandalay Hill. Walk up to Mandalay Hill and down back to the hotel and you will be guaranteed a full night's sleep.
