Additional Details & Recommendations
Wood for the Stove: Order a bundle of firewood delivered to your treehouse for $50 per load (about 25 pieces, enough for one night), or bring your own (logs must be 12 inches or shorter). We recommend bringing a fire starter unless youâre an expert fire-builder!
Check-In: 4:00 PM standard check-in. Want to arrive earlier? A 1:30 PM early check-in is available for $50 (paid directly to our cleaning crew). We highly recommend booking two nights to fully immerse yourself in everything the property has to offer.
Wildlife & Nature: You are deep in the woods, so expect to encounter deer, turkeys, squirrels, rabbits, owls, and occasionally cows and horses! While rare, you may see the occasional mouse, wasp, or flying insectâespecially if you leave the barn doors open overnight (we advise closing them before heading out).
Explore the Surrounding Area
Beyond the treehouse, youâll find hidden gems in historic small towns nearby:
Augusta, KY â Stroll along the Ohio River, visit George Clooneyâs childhood hometown, and grab a bite at the Beehive Tavern for riverside fine dining.
Ripley, OH â Take a charming ferry ride across the river and explore a town steeped in Underground Railroad history.
Quick Eats & Essentials â Need a quick bite? Order a pizza from the Germantown First Stop gas station (just four miles away), or stock up on supplies there.
A Dream That Became Reality
This treehouse isnât just a place to stayâitâs the realization of a childhood dream.
As a child, I longed for a treehouse where I could find peace and adventure. My siblings and I would play in the woods, building imaginary treehouses from branches, moss, and stones. That dream never faded.
In 2007, my husband Bill and I launched EarthJOY Tree Adventures, offering guided tree climbs. We wanted our guests to not only climb treesâbut live among them. In 2009, we attended Pete Nelsonâs Treehouse Workshop and searched endlessly for the perfect landâuntil fate stepped in.
One day, on a whim, I applied to Animal Planetâs "Treehouse Masters." When they called to say weâd been selected, I had no land to offer. Thatâs when I called my dad.
"Can we build a treehouse on your farm?" I asked.
He laughed, then said, "YES!" His dream of running a massive cattle farm shifted, and our treehouse dream took root instead.
In December 2014, our dream became a reality. Not only do we enjoy the treehouses ourselves, but we love sharing this magic with others. Our guests donât just stay in a treehouseâthey become part of its story.
Now, itâs your turn.
Come lose yourself in the magic of the forest, embrace the adventure that awaits, and find peace in the treetops.

This was my daughterâs preferred destination for her 13th birthday after we had visited about 4 years ago. The floor layout has changed a bit since the first trip, but all changes are improvements. Itâs just an awesome place to hike, hang out, and decompress. Weâll definitely be back!
Bill and Shelly have really outdone themselves in their journey of creating Earthjoy. You can tell there is so much love put into each and everything they offer. The hiking, the slides big enough to sit up in, the wind chime forest where you can hang a chime for your lost loved ones, the old 1800 house, the hanging sitting spots throughout the site, and all the fun they offer for children. We stayed in the Pete Nelson Treehouse and it was beautiful and so fun. Loved the giant doors to see outside, the ninja obstacles and swing for kids, the hammock for two, and the awesome fire pit to enjoy and relax at night with sâmores and hotdogs. The bathhouse was so cozy and you have it all to yourself. It was nice to have a relaxing to shower and wash our hands. The buck stove in the living room kept us warm at night by fire but they also had a space heater that kept us extra cozy.
The best part of the trip was the kids snd husband learned how to climb a tree with Bill. They were harnessed, had a helmet, could swing from the rope, and come down upside down. They absolutely loved it and what a unique and fun experience to fully appreciate all the trees have to offer.
We packed too much and bought too much food, but we will know better next time what to bring and what not to bring.
It was truly an exciting, wonderful experience that they have built for tree lovers alike to enjoy and we will definitely be coming back. Thanks Shelly and Bill!!!
We liked it but honestly itâs a little pricey for what it is. Out of date pictures make it hard to understand the layout and we ended up bringing things we didnât need because the listing is light on details for the kitchenette. Would be nice if the other rentals at this property were listed on Vrbo because it is hard to know if there will be nearby neighbors or not from the listing.
EarthJoy is an incredible retreat not far from the hustle and bustle of Cincinnati. Our family (ages 11-56) absolutely loved our weekend in Pete Nelsonâs treehouse and Shelly and Billâs 285 acre property. Thank you!
Overall, we had a great experience in the treehouse. It took us back to our youth as scouts with latrine duty, fire building, boiling water for washing dishes/ditty bags and endless hikes with all means if flora and fauna regardless of the weather.
When we found this pete Nelson treehouse we thought heck yes, bucket list. We were a bit concerned about warmth and really prepared but the wood stove was awesome and we were actually too warm at night. The place has what you need plus as long as you think primitive vs convenience lodging. It was great and the trails were fun. The stars amazing. And the cell coverage better than expected. We'd definitely come back in spring or fall to expand on our wonderful winter retreat.
With social distancing this was the perfect getaway. The treehouse was very cool and convenient. Loved sitting on the deck, laying in the hammock and our night by the campfire.
Another wonderful weekend with friends! We even attempted the tree climb-! The fall temps were great for a hike and the fireplace was great and kept us very warm. Love the Pete Nelson, hope to be back next year, I highly recommend any of the Ky climbers treehouses. They're all just great!
We absolutely loved staying in the Pete Nelson treehouse! Everything was wonderful - from the first instructions/directions we received, to the property, to the amenities, and of course the treehouse itself! We had a great family get-away - nice to unplug, grill out, enjoy nature, etc. Hoping to come back next year and stay again! Thanks for everything!
We had a great trip in the Pete Nelson tree house. It rained the entire time we were there so we were stuck inside the entire time but that did not stop us from having a blast! We turned on the wood burning stove, roasted marshmallows and played games the entire night. It was the relaxing weekend we wanted. We can't wait to come back when the weather is nicer so we can explore the property a bit more.
Our three children, my husband and I enjoyed our two night stay. We played card games, hiked numerous trials, picnicked in the great outdoors. We appreciated the freedom to explore. And it was an added bonus that our dog could join us on this adventure. A notebook in the tree house gave suggestions for activities and restaurants in towns nearby. But we received a personal introduction to the tree house, how to heat it, and suggestions on grocery stores from Shelly herself. We were able to build a campfire and roast marshmallows, and really enjoy nature and each other. Shelly is a fantastic host!
We came to the Tree House for a new adventure.
The Tree House was very clean. Although we had read the property description, we packed as if we were on a primitive camping trip, just to be sure we had what we needed. When we arrived, we found the owner had provided plenty of additional battery operated lighting, and other essentials such as a dish cloth, dish towel, and dish soap. There were plenty of blankets and pillows.
We enjoyed the hammock in the back yard.
The hiking was fun and the three person hammock at the top of the ridge was so nice!
We appreciated the bathhouse facility. It was clean and well lit. There are two doors to the bathhouse. One door for each tree house. Indoor plumbing here with a sink, toilet, and shower. (Hooray!)
We had a great relaxing time at the tree house and plan to return in the Autumn.
Wonderful treehouse in Kentucky. Awake to hear the birds singing and lounge in the hammock or cook breakfast on the grill. Return to nature in style on the 200 acre property. Take a hike to a large three person hammock or throw rocks in the stream while cows graze nearby. This is secluded, but that's why your here right? You can also drive into nearby Augusta and walk along the Ohio River.
