Hidden Hills' Story...
Erica and Travis both work high-stress jobs, but as soon as they arrive at their gorgeous big cabin in a hilltop community high above the Blue Ridge valley⊠that stress just melts away.
âWhen we hit the mountains,â Travis tells me when we sit down to chat about Hidden Hills, âitâs instant relief and relaxation.â
I can certainly see how the day-to-day details of a busy life start to disappear once youâre 2,200 feet up in the mountains, enjoying the warmth of a fire (or hot tub) with your loved ones.
And Travisâs and Ericaâs loved ones are the whole reason for Hidden Hills.
With two kids, and two pups (Doodle mixes), they decided to create the perfect family friendly space that they themselves would want to stay in â and they did just that.
Travis comes from a close-knit family of seven, and even as an adult he is happiest when heâs surrounded by friends and loved ones. When he and Erica travel, itâs with other couples with kids and dogs â and Hidden Hills is exactly the kind of place they would look for.
âWhen we come up here, itâs to get away and make memories,â he says, âand what is more memorable than getting together with some of your favorite people and enjoying these North Georgia towns, the outdoors, and everything else around here? There are two lakes to swim in, woods, hiking⊠My wife loves wine, and we are right in the heart of wine country â the cabin is literally five minutes from our favorite vineyard. Itâs perfect.â
***
When they got the cabin, Travis tells me, it wasnât quite as family friendly as theyâd wanted. There wasnât much for kids to do. Two bunk beds, an assortment of games, a foosball table, and one pizza oven later, Hidden Hills is an absolute wonderland for a kid.
I ask Travis about TVs and video games.
âYeah, there are fancy smart TVâs and everything,â he says, âand you can plug a gaming console right in, I suppose, but when my kids are up here, you know what they do? Theyâre not playing video games â theyâre skipping stones!â Travis laughs. âMy younger one, all he wants to do is go to the lake and collect rocks. Iâm not even kidding. One day, I am doing a load of laundry and I hear, âtink tink tink.â I go to look. The kid threw a pair of shorts in there with a pocketful of little flat stones he found by the water, and theyâre all just tumbling around in the washer.â He smiles at the memory. âThis is what kids really love doing. They can play their video games when theyâre back in the city.â
Hidden Hills isnât just kidsâ paradise, though. Nearly half a mile above sea level, everybody gets to enjoy a kickass view (Travisâs words) made even better if youâre admiring it from the sunken hot tub on the deck (glass of a local chardonnay in hand, perhaps?)
The wraparound verandas are a perfect gathering point for the Golden Hour, and when it gets cool you can head inside to the fireplace or down to the firepit to laugh and tell stories well into the starry night.
The beds are comfy, the linens soft, and the sleeping is good when youâre breathing that clean mountain air. The modern kitchen is stocked and ready to feed a hungry crew of hikers and swimmers and rock collectors, and the island bar and leather couches are great places to hang out before and after the feasts.
Time at Hidden Hills doesnât pass at exactly the same rate as it does elsewhere. Itâs somehow both slower and faster. Slow as youâre making lifelong memories⊠but the last day of your stay will inevitably arrive far too quickly.
