Historic Thomas McLin House Downtown, 2 blocks from Tryon Palace

The Thomas McLin House.

A prominent local Coppersmith and merchant built this home for his daughter in 1822. While visiting New Bern stay in this historic 2 story federal style Apartment.

During the Great Fire of New Bern in 1922 the roof burnt, however the home was luckily able to be repaired and expanded in the federal style as two townhouse style apartments, as it remains today. The heart pine wood flooring outlines the original 1822 floor plan, while the 1922 upstairs addition constructed after the devastating great fire has southern yellow pine wood flooring. The original 1822 fireplace mantel remains, and the antique light fixtures make you feel as though you’ve been transported back in time.

You will be located within a short walk to many amentities such as shopping, restrauants, museums, and marinas. We are located 2 blocks from the historic Tryon Palace main gate and a couple more blocks from the NC History Museum. Whether you are touring the historical streets and sites of one of North Carolina’s colonial capitals or enjoying the neighborhood coffee shop, hunting for treasures at one of the many antique shops, taking a day trip to the beach, exploring coastal Carolina, or enjoying the micro-brewery a few blocks away, this is a convenient and great location to call home while you are visiting.

Welcome.

We had a great time! The historic home was gorgeous and had a wonderful charm. It was a bit annoying that painters were hired to work during our visit, but they only worked the first day we were there.

When you book an historic home, you expect age-related items such as few outlets, creaky floor boards, less than level floors along with (hopefully) character and history. This home had all of the above, but you would hope the historic aspects of the house would be tempered with some modern comforts. The A/C and WiFi worked but the seating options were horrible. There were 4 mismatched and uncomfortable chairs around the kitchen table, and the sofa in the living room had to be the most uncomfortable I have ever sat in. The advertised lania/lpatio was a back porch stoop inaccessible from inside the house and the garden advertised had 3 hard metal rusting chairs in the middle of an unkempt area. So there was no place to just sit and, relax have a drink or read a book. Beyond that, neither the microwave nor the Keurig coffee maker worked. The location was quiet and was walkable to town, but you need to be reasonably mobile to do it as the heart of the downtown was about 3/4 mile from the house. Also, FYI - the picture displays the whole house but the rental portion was only half with a full time resident in the other half, but that was not an issue. Bottom line: disappointing stay.

Old house in cute town

The house is positioned off one of the busier roads but still very quiet and not very busy at all. Easy to walk everywhere in town. Overall a totally fine stay.

Super close to Tryon Palace

Beautiful, clean home within walking distance to Tryon, shops, restaurants, etc. We also went on a ghost walk and did the trolley history tour...all within walking distance of the house. The house is fully stocked with everything you could possibly need. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. I would definitely return to New Bern and book this lovely house again.

Historic New Bern

Enjoyed staying in a historic home in a walkable historic neighborhood. The home was comfortable and well equipped. Enjoy the ambiance of an older home but be aware that the stairway to the second floor was long. We enjoyed our stay and wished we had a longer visit.

Magical Town

This property gave us the historical feel of this incredible small town. It was perfectly located for walks throughout the town. We walked to the river walk, Union Point Park, the 911 Memorial Service at the Fire Dept. Museum, to the Historic Trolley Tour, the Birthplace of Pepsi shop, Mitchell’s Hardware, Franklin’s Antiques, Morgan’s restaurant, Tyron Palace, and every block of beautiful historic houses! The people we met were so welcoming and helpful! We loved our time in New Bern! It’s a magical town! Antiques,
