About this property

Waterfront Kayak and Nature Lovers Dream Mathews County Farmhouse

Authentic Mathews County Fisherman’s Farmhouse located in New Point, VA. This renovated 3 bedroom farmhouse is waterfront on Dyer Creek which opens on to the Chesapeake Bay. Situated on 6 acres next to the Nature Conservancy Preserve makes this rental a nature lover’s paradise. “Bayside at Bavon” is framed between twin mature Magnolia trees. The sweeping front porch has a porch swing and chairs, which make it an ideal spot to drink morning coffee or meet for an evening cocktail. The wrap-a-round porch leads to a screened back porch ideal for lounging under ceiling fans, grilling today’s catch of the day or watching the boats come in from a day out on the bay. Whether you decide to cook in the well equipped kitchen with rustic beams or eat on the screen porch, the full lite French door makes it easy to entertain guests in either location.
The middle parlor, now a comfortable living room with leather sofa & club chairs, Heriz rug, Adirondack twig rocking chair and a walnut dry sink is an easy to use room whether you want to read a book or watch a movie. (Flat screen TV only for DVD & AmazonFireStick, no cable). The downstairs full size bath has been finished with nautical charts and an old painted chest with stripped top that has been converted into a charming sink. The shower is extra hot to wash off the day’s excursions or use the deck outdoor shower overlooking the water. The middle upper hall leads to three comfortable size bedrooms and a new full bath with a full sized recent washer dryer. Guests must bring their own linens, bath and bed, (linen package available). Bed comforters and pillows provided. The front bedroom features 5 windows with water views and a double size comfortable oak bed. The painted floor hallway leads to the two other bedrooms each equipped with new windows, double beds and one with a pair of bunk beds ideal for children. Guests provide all linens and bath towels.
“Bayside at Bavon” is an ideal weekend or week retreat for kayak lovers, bird watchers, artists who are looking to capture a photographic image, or a cozy family get-a-away. The rustic charm will put you in touch with nature and wash any stress away. Enjoy an easy 15 minute walk to the overlook which provides easy kayak & canoe launch. A short boat ride leads you to a large white sandy beach overlooking Thomas Jefferson’s New Point Comfort Lighthouse circa 1804. Although the lighthouse is not open to the public, it gives explorers a historic destination point and you can kayak out to it, if ambitious, (about a 1/4 mile off the beach).
Easy day trips can be made to Colonial Williamsburg, Yorktown, Jamestown, and other historic sites. Charter fishing trips and boat/kayak rentals are available throughout the County. Marinas and public boat ramps are nearby. Busch Gardens and Water Country U.S.A. are about an hour away – but why leave…Mathews is the best kept secret on the Bay!
Mathew Courthouse Village is a quaint town with several restaurants, shopping, Food Lion grocery store, gourmet pizza parlor, antique stores and small boutique shops. Be sure to stop in the Visitor’s Center at Old Sibley’s Store and pick up a copy of the BluewWater Trails or find it on-line. Mathews has 2 public beaches – Haven Beach and Bethel Beach Preserve. More information can be found at Mathews County info site or google them. We are glad to talk about the house and area in detail!

Great thanksgiving getaway
Our family spent the week of Thanksgiving at the Farmhouse. It was rustic and great. The kitchen was great great to work in for the TG meal with a fabulous view to the waterfront. We loved taking walks to the public dock on the road through the marsh.

Bay Paradise
Kayaking to secluded beaches, dinners on the screened in porch, hours in the water--all that we could hope for out of our week.

Great Place to Get Away From It All
Really great property for those looking to disconnect and be outside. Mathews is a great small town with plenty of restaurants and beaches for the dogs. House was exactly as listed and the owner was great with communication. The owner also shared a ton of good information about local spots around the area prior to our arrival which we really appreciated. Favorite spot was definitely the large screened in porch with amazing views.

Country & a beach
This place is the best of both worlds - country like setting with peace and quiet, but right on the water & in close proximity to several beaches. Plus the town is quaint! We were unfortunately delayed getting on the road for our trip due to traffic and had a small hiccup at arrival getting in, but the owner was very responsive and the issue was quickly resolved. We really enjoyed our stay and are definitely considering coming for a longer stay. If you need to get away from a busy, hectic life, this is the place! Nothing fancy, but simple and rustic, relaxed. The description and pictures are on point. Great time for all - dogs, kid & adults!

Christmas mini vacay
We stayed here over a 3 day weekend to celebrate our family Christmas with our children and grandchildren. The house was roomy enough and the vintage feel of it was nice. Having to bring our own linens for the beds and towels was mentioned in the description, yes, but having to bring all that extra stuff was a lot to ask of visitors. So if you stay here, keep in mind that you’ll need bed linens, towels, kitchen towels, hand towels and wash clothes. Also bring all your bathroom toiletries and shower supplies. We are familiar with Gloucester and Mathews but the location of the house is pretty deep into the marsh south of Mathews. It’s a drive. House to Gloucester is 30-45 minutes. Owners replied to messages quickly. It was a great stay overall. Our family had a wonderful visit.

Picture Perfect
We were in town for a wedding and this was the perfect location and just as advertised. The house itself was quaint and quirky in all the right ways and the views were gorgeous. Loved the screened in porch and so did the dogs.

Peaceful
With banks of woods on each side and backing up to the water; the lightly used road in front is the only source of activity at the place. There may be better ways of spending a morning sitting on the back porch to watch the light of sunrise awaken the birds with your morning coffee -but I struggle to come up with one. The old farmhouse is charming, with a nice mix of antique charm and modern amenities. The old fashioned locks, screen doors with hook closers, vintage cabinets are reminders this place is older than it appears. Updates like the cable porch banister, retrofitted central air, wifi and large television keep you in this century. The one thing I would really like to see added in the kitchen is a light over the stove -cooking could be a bit challenging after sundown even with all the lights in the kitchen on. The owner has contracted a service to treat around the house for mosquitoes etc., and between this and screen doors / porches things are pretty well handled. There is a dock and kayaks for use, maybe about 250 yards behind the house. The owner has provided some rubber boots to use for the trip -because you will need them. At high tide the path is underwater -at low tide the path is plenty muddy. But you are in the lowland marsh country after all. Speaking of the lowland marsh, all those birds and fish are eating something -and a lot of that something wants to eat you. I am no entomologist, but it seems there are at least half a dozen types of bugs there which are happy to munch down on you. Bring your cover up clothing and plenty of bug spray for your trips to the water.
