Elizabethan House is 17th-century Grade II listed property located in Portland, situated just 500 yards from Chesil Beach and within a short walk from the National Sailing Academy.
Internally, the property has been refurbished whilst retaining a character style with exposed stone walls, stripped floors and timber beams. Externally, the enclosed front and rear courtyard gardens provide the perfect place to relax after a day exploring the attractions of Weymouth and Portland.
Portland Harbour is a short drive away and offers some of the finest small boat sailing waters in Northern Europe. This location was the official venue for the Olympic sailing events in 2012. Portland also boasts Chesil Beach, an impressive 18-mile long shingle beach within just 500 yards of the property.
Lovely stay. Perfect for the beach or a cliff walk.
Itâs in a good location but the road that runs along side it, is a bit noisy. When the cars are quiet, you can hear the waves which is nice. Itâs in a good location as Portland has some lovely, slightly challenging walks but itâs also a good position to drive to many other lovely locations.
Water sports nearby, we didnât use the facilities but they looked great.
Parking was slightly tricky but managed to get a space with a bit of patience!
We have rented Elizabethan House for this past week and have some observations which may help to make your future guests more comfortable.
Although in a very noisy location, the house is perfectly situated for the National Sailing Centre. However, there are a few items that need attention.
Although it is relatively well equipped, our main complaints are with the kitchen;
The oven is a disgrace. It is filthy and needs a thorough professional clean.
The potato peeler is useless.
The dishwasher does not operate properly with the large plates provided.
The dish rack is disgusting and too dirty to use. The sink does not have any other drying/draining facility.
Surely basic ingredients like salt and pepper grinders, olive oil and washing up liquid could be made available to renters? Other houses we have rented have always provided these basic ingredients.
Although the TV has the ability to connect to "on demand" services such as BBC iplayer or Netflix, and the house has wifi, the TV is not connected to the internet so none of these services are available to your guests. Maybe this is less important in the summer months but is a pretty basic requirement for wet days and dark winter nights.
It would be also be very useful for the ensuite shower-room to be equipped with, if not a proper heated towel rail, at least some hooks to hang wet towels.
Also, given the location, many guests will be participating in water sports so will have lots of wet gear that will need drying. Having more hooks by the front door and in the bathrooms for hanging wet gear and towels to dry would be very helpful, especially when the weather and temperatures are not conducive to drying things outside.
On the positive side, we loved the wood stove, although we did have to go purchase matches because the lighter would not work.

The house is mostly spacious but unfortunately all the stripped pine and old floorboards werenât to my taste. Given there were six of us I found it difficult to cook in the small kitchen, which badly needs some new pots and pans. A spring clean of the kitchen is badly needed too. My daughter found it difficult to sleep because of the noise of the traffic, and sheâs used to living in London! I also thought the handrail on the steep stairs to the top floor should be extended for complete safety, and the two steps down to the kitchen need some sort of hazard warning because it would be easy to miss them and fall. Strangely the hair dryer had been PAT tested when there were other hazards.
