WATERFRONT COTTAGE RENTAL
WATERFRONT COTTAGE BUILT 1952 An iconic Seldovia home is now available for rent. This idyllic cottage home, built-in 1952, has been home to many Seldovia families. It is built on the historic old boardwalk that once ran the entire length of Main Street prior to the 1964 quake. The lower level on the boardwalk is a warehouse with a washer & dryer, up a gentle flight of stairs to the kitchen & sitting area, two bedrooms and a full bathroom. The kitchen is fully appointed with Cuisinart, Kitchen Aid Mixer, and press pot for coffee; owners live next door if you need anything. A steep staircase takes you to two more bedrooms. The wrapped deck includes a BBQ, planters, and furniture. We purchased the house in 1976 and enjoyed it as a weekend retreat from our busy lives in Anchorage. It is one of the most photographed scenes in Seldovia, the first glimpse of town from the bridge when arriving from the airstrip. The home is built on pilings over the slough, a tidal estuary of Seldovia Bay. Enjoy the energy of the daily tides and the many varieties of birds, including eagles with scenic mountains in the background. You can fish for salmon from the beach below the deck in June, watch the 5K salmon shuffle run down the boardwalk the morning of July 4th, see otters playing in the slough below the house, and admire the perennial garden park just outside the door. There was a mixup with our booking, but Suzie managed to find accommodations for us for the first night, which worked out fine. Then, we arrived at her place overlooking the water, and it was beyond amazing. The only thing I would add is that for a large group, the living space is not very big, especially if the weather takes a turn for the worst. But, if itâs sunny, youâll have an amazing time!
The pros: The setting is quaint and beautiful, right on the water on the historic boardwalk. The house was cozy, the kitchen has everything you might need, the beds were super comfortable and the host let us check in a little early and tried to be responsive to the issues that came to light.
The cons: The kitchen stove didnât light, the Wi-Fi password didnât work (and only Verizon works there), there was no hot water, the microwave plate was pretty gross, the coffee maker had a reusable filter filled with very moldy grounds and there was only one roll of toilet paper. The stove was fixed almost immediately. It was the second afternoon before we finally got the correct password info. We had no hot water until the evening before we left but there was an another (quite nice) place to shower down the boardwalk and up some stairs. We scrubbed the microwave plate, didn't use the coffee maker, and we took a roll of TP from the alternate bathroom. I think a few of these problems were because we were the first guests of the season and I think the kinks have been ironed out now, but all of them could have been prevented with a pre-check. None of it ruined the good time we had there (and it was a really comfortable place) but for the price we expected fewer issues.
Beautiful little cottage with tons of small details that keep you surprised each day. Friendly and accommodating hosts. Would love the opportunity to stay here again in the future.
This was our 2nd stay at Susieâs waterfront cottage and will remain our go-to for trips to Seldovia. Once again really enjoyed the location - easy walk to the harbor area for food, paddle boarded from just below the cottage, watched the kids fishing off the bridge from the deck, prime eagle watching location. The cottage itself is cozy and stocked with everything needed for a comfortable stay. Suzie is a wonderful host and we are happy to have found this vacation gem!
We had the best time at Susieâs place! Took the kids for a long weekend, turned off the TV, beachcombed, assembled puzzles, and made lasting memories!!
This was our second time to Seldovia and we loved having the opportunity to stay along the iconic boardwalk! Suzie's quaint and authentically Alaskan cottage on the water has stunning views and just invites you curl up with a good book and rejuvenate. Suzie was very responsive and helpful during our stay, even allowing us to have a late checkout which was extremely helpful while travelling with an infant! Would absolutely stay again! Thanks for another amazing visit to Seldovia Suzie!
