National Register Property

Cable Office in Seward, Alaska, United States, is a building that served as a telegraph office that connected Seward with communications in the rest of the United States.

The cable office was constructed in 1905 by the U.S. Army Signal Corps as part of the Washington–Alaska Military Cable and Telegraph System (WAMCATS). Telegraph service from the lower states first connected to Valdez, Alaska. In summer 1905, submarine cable was extended from Valdez to Seward.

The first message over the line was to A. C. Frost, president of the Alaska Central Railway, who was in Chicago: 'This first message transmitted over Alaska Cable connects Seward from this day to the great city of Chicago.' Among initial regular users of the telegraph line was the local newspaper, the Seward Daily Gateway. In August 1905, owner Frank Ballaine began featuring the previous day's news from the Coterminous United States in his paper. Before the telegraph line, outside news arrived via steam ship days or weeks later.

The office was operated by Army personnel. The front room of the building was open to the public who could send and receive messages. The central part of the ground floor served as the operator's station, while workers lived on the second floor. Service continued until an earthquake severed the line in 1934. By that time, radio communication had been established by the Navy and the telegraph line was not replaced. The government retained ownership until 1961. Since then, the building has served as a private residence and rented apartments.

We are now offering lodging in this wonderful home. Completely renovated bathrooms, fresh interior paint and charming period touches throughout and a beautiful, historic exterior as well.

The house is set up similar to a duplex, with the GOVT. CABLE OFFICE downstairs (2 bedroom/2 bath, kitchen, living room and a wonderful covered porch.

The upstairs is the original lodging with a completely separate entrance. This is a 2 bedroom/1 bath. This is referred to as the TELEGRAPH HOUSE QUARTERS (also on VRBO).

Both have some wonderful views and a 1905 historic feel. You may rent both the top and bottom (depending on availability) or try both on different occasions!

Walking distance to the Sealife Center, dining and shopping and the waterfront.

You'll love the location, the parking and the views right from your front porch!

Cute Historic Place

I loved the place. The owner has done a lot to keep with the historic theme. Yes the floors creak but considering the house was built in 1905 it is in good condition. Bathrooms are redone and new. Walking distant to many food and shopping options. If/when we return we would book again.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Telegraph House. The house has so much early Seward history and is filled with many antiques. It is beautifully restored. We immediately liked the house as soon as we walked in the door. The house is located two blocks from the water and two blocks from the downtown area. Most of the shops and restaurants are within walking distance, as well as the Sea Life Center.Check in was easy. The communication with the owner before and during our stay was excellent.

Outstanding

The property is amazing. The recently renovated property was well done and it was tastefully decorated. Lots of antiques and history to catch your interest. Bed was comfy. Clean. Roomy. Check in and out was simple with clear instructions. The Host was on top of everything. Centrally located. Just perfect. I would certainly look to book this again the next visit.

Cute with historic charm

TLDR: would absolutely stay again.People often give ST rentals a hard time, but while staying here, I got to thinking about how, if it wasn't a STR, this gem of historic charm would be lost. It's perfect as something different for a couple of nights or a week, but not something many people would keep as it is if they were living there permanently. Which would be a real shame.Communication in advance was great, access was easy, and the location is beautiful overlooking the water. Beds were comfortable, with plentiful bedding. We didn't make use of the kitchen, but everything you'd need seemed to be there.Things to be aware of in terms of layout - the back bedroom has a step down into it, so that one is not ideal for anyone with mobility issues. The front bedroom is the one with the en-suite.Sebastien, the caretaker, was wonderful. He texted to check in on our first of two mornings there, and then when we got back that evening, he'd left a laundry basket full of additional clean blankets and a ziplock of assorted taffy between our two access doors (inside the property, but not inside our unit), with a sweet note to say sorry the weather had turned, but hopefully the taffy would make up for it! (We thought the weather was fine actually - it had started drizzling around lunchtime but exactly in line with the forecast and what you'd expect from Alaska). These are the sorts of little gestures that go a long way.100% recommendation.

Lovely historical home

My kid's and I had such a wonderful time staying at this cozy, historical home. The host is so wonderful. Great communication and super easy check in process. The home is tucked into a cute neighborhood which is right by the Sealife Center and ocean views. My kids loved that we could walk down the street to the park and skate park! The airbnb had everything we needed which always makes life with kids easy. I enjoyed the history of the home and the photo album of the home and it's journey. We are definitely coming back. P.S. The beds are very comfortable!

Great location...Everything you need

Located downtown close to restaurants, shops, and two of the free shuttle stops. The waterfront walking trail and Sealife Center were only 2 blocks away. The free shuttle takes you to the harbor or train station or it is an easy 30 minute walk. The house was well-stocked and the layout was great. Communication was easy and the responses were quick. I would definitely recommend and would stay here again if we are in the area.

Nice Stay!

The 1905 Government Cable Office - Self check-in was very easy. The apartment is in a great location within walking distance of the historic Downtown and SeaLife Center. It was very comfortable but could definitely use a little general sprucing up - new pillows and bedding perhaps along with a bit of a kitchen tweak. We had an issue with the hot water and it was attended to immediately. Contact with the owner was excellent.

Beautifully restored

House has been tenerly restored and is close to most things. Unfortunately, upon arrival it was lacking in sheets and pillow covers for the pullout and there was no bath soap in one bathroom and almost out in the other. These were eventually rectified. There also was no dish washing soap in the kitchen which is a first for all of the VRBO stays we have had. Guests must enter through back doors as no combo lock in front...a slight inconvenience but possibly due to historic significance.

Property was great! Location is convenient to downtown, harbor and beautiful views of Resurrection Bay. Free shuttles available to get you around downtown area during certain times, but if you need to be somewhere at a specific time or very early, you need your own transportation. Especially if you have people in your party not able to walk distances easily. Only two complaints about the property. 1.) miscommunication regarding check in which resulted in our party having to spend about 3 and 1/2 hours walking downtown after traveling all night because property was not ready and messages sent regarding early check in and arrival information were not answered. 2.) Sharing a hot water heater with above unit often resulted in no hot water for showers or very limited. The historic charm of the house is delightful and the views from the front porch can make you forget all other concerns.

Great location and loaded with history

We really enjoyed our stay at the Cable House. Plenty of room for 4 people. Tanguy & Sebastian were very responsive. Shower had lots of hot water with pressure. Bedding was very comfortable. Full well equipped kitchen. House overlooks the water and is only 2 blocks from the main street. Unfortunately it rained our entire time there. Would have enjoyed sitting on the front porch. Really liked all the historical information displayed regarding the Cable House. Also Tanguy had an antique iron which was made at Colebrookdale Iron Works, Boyertown, PA which is around 15 minutes from our home in Pennsylvania. Learned that the iron was his wife’s grandmothers. Heat is radiator heat so was nice and toasty.

Interesting and historical

We loved staying in this interesting old house so near the water and in walking distance of almost every place we wanted to go. We were only there two nights and were busy during the day, so there was not enough time to study all the interesting period art and knickknacks in detail, but they created a pleasant atmosphere that we enjoyed very much. The beds were comfortable, and we felt that we had lots of space. Thanks so much!
