In an area overrun by mass tourism, it was an intimate and very enjoyable experience, combining the best of Cambodian hospitality, Japanese grace and attention to detail as well as French style. Amatao is in a completely rural setting, well away from the crowds of Siem Reap, but within easy striking distance of the Angkor complex and the airport. This is actually a tiny compound of a few guest cabins but with all modern conveniences, very well decorated and offering excellent food. The owner-manager, Naomi-san, is a charming Japanese lady who ensures that everything works well and also doubles as chef. When I was asked what my preferences were for breakfasts and dinners, I asked if they could be "Omakase" and at each meal I was presented with an amazing variety of dishes, each expertly prepared, beautifully presented and served with gentle Cambodian grace.
The staff went out of their way to accommodate us. Business teleconferences at all hours of the day and night plus ensuring that the rest of the time the family had the tours, dinners, guides required to explore Siem Reap
