Woody Mamaku Retreat . Eco stay close to sea and nature.

Take time to enjoy a cool forest, bird song , frogs and the 10 minute walk down a quiet road to the golden sands of Ligar Bay and after, a secluded soak in an outdoor bath , big enough for two with a beautiful view.

Woody Mamaku Retreat is an unique and enlivening indoor and outdoor accommodation on the edge of secluded kanuka forest.
The cabin is a c.1950 steel kiln controller room lined in beautiful cypress from locally grown trees with views through a park like setting to the bay and beyond. This comfy room with double bed is connected to a small sunny front deck and a semi covered back porch kitchen with four gas burners, a small fridge,cutlery, cooking utensils, plates etc etc. A hot shower, an out door bath and a separate compost toilet 5 metres up the path. Built in local macrocarpa timber the back porch, toilet and front deck have a natural woody character.
It is off the grid , gas and solar powered with 4min eco showers to conserve spring water. There is very limited mobile phone coverage at the cabin but is fine at the beach.
By car its
5 minutes toTarakohe Harbour and rock climbing cliffs.
7 mins to Pohara cafes and bars.
15 mins to Takaka township
10 - 15 mins to Abel Tasman track and Wainui Falls.

Duvet, sheets, towels etc provided . (Please provide sheets if using massage oils in the bed thanks.l.
No pets . No smoking .

A very small but nicely decorated cabin
rustic but comfortable. Bed was excellent. Best for outdoor lovers: outdoor kitchen and shower; composting toilet. Short walk to Ligar Bay beach for good swimming. I had a lovely stay.

Just an incredible spot. Private, everything you need, great hosts. Very comfortable bed. If you love the sounds of nature, you couldn't pick a better spot. Very eco friendly too with solar power and compostable toilet. Fantastic value for the price charged.

We stayed with my husband at Woody Mamaku Retreat for 5 nights and it was all what we looked to relax and enjoy the golden bay. The views are spectacular and the bird life there was amazing. I’ll definitely stay again there in a future. The cabin is very clean and has everything you need. We loved the outdoor shower and being able to cook surrounded by nature.

Host, along with communication was impeccable. There were a few little hiccoughs mainly because we were the first travellers of the season but nothing that couldn't be sorted. The cabin was extremely cute & clean with a great little view. The outside kitchen was well equipped with everything you would require. We were also gifted some veg & lemons from their garden.Outside shower & bath plus compostible loo all clean & tidy. Easy walking to LIgar Bay & drive to anywhere in the bay. Great for a fab off grid getaway. Thanks

This is an amazing little cabin in the nature and by the sea. You can see a small part of the ocean from the porch which is absolutely incredible. The outdoor shower was also amazing. I will say there are a few bugs youll need to remove from the inside of the cabin and the toilet area had ants crawling all around inside. It didnt bother us though, it only took a few minutes. Since there is no cell service, they have board games and cards available. Worth it for the 2 nights we stayed.

Wonderful cabin, gorgeous views and relaxing surrounds

We loved staying at John and Pene’s cabin. It was well-equipped, perfectly situated and very private. We really appreciated the craftsmanship and attention to detail in the cabin and had a really serene, relaxing time listening to nature and taking in the wonderful views. It really is a gem of a place.John and Pene were conscientious and thoughtful hosts. We would have loved to have stayed longer and hope to return sometime. Ngā mihi nui.

Idyllic little retreat

We loved our stay here. The cabin is nestled in nature, surrounded by birdsong and has a lovely view of the sea. It's the perfect place to switch off and relax. The outdoor shower was a particular highlight. John and Pene were good hosts - it was nice to have the cabin refreshed halfway through our stay. Strongly recommended.

Lovely cabin stay

We loved our stay. The cabin was clean and comfortable. The attached undercover kitchen was clean and well-equipped, and the outdoor shower was a fun novelty. The cabin is bounded by native bush with abundant birdlife, and the surrounds are very peaceful. Only a 10 min walk to the beach. John was a helpful and responsive host. We look forward to returning.

The best spot to relax in, love Ligar Bay and Tata Beach just around the corner. Comfy bed and wonderful view. John and Pene were lovely. Would stay here again absolutely!
