Agree with most of the previous reviews but would like to add a couple things we did. We had a family of ten 6 adults, 4 teenage kids. Working with Mary Diekers, the rental property manager, we employed a ten person van and driver to pick us up at the airport. Turns out he was also an excellent daily tour guide, setting up and driving us to zip line, ATV, horse back riding, and river cruise activities. His name is Jeffery Guevara, very friendly, speaks fluent English, and was knowledgable on everything Costa Rican. We also selected to have evening chefs cook dinner for us on three occasions. This was especially helpful after returning from a busy day of activities. Highly recommend Chefs Garrett Hurley and his wife. Their food preparation was incredible, much better than any restaurant. We also rented an SUV at the airport as kind of a back up. As stated by others the property is realatively isolated with bummpy dirt roads in and out.
A perfect beachfront escape - a rare find of beauty and peacefulness
This house is absolutely breathtaking! Nestled in the charming small town of Playa Negra, it offered stunning ocean views and a gorgeous beach just a short walk beyond the pool. We loved that we could stroll straight from the house along the sand to the best swimming spotâno need for a car. From the moment we arrived, we knew we wouldnât want to leaveâand we hardly did! With everything we needed right at our fingertips, our rental car sat untouched. The house itself was beautifully designed, seamlessly blending comfort with the natural beauty around it. The bedrooms offered so much privacy that I often had to text everyone when it was time to gather for mealsâit was that spacious! Every morning, we woke up to the soothing sound of waves and enjoyed delicious meals prepared by our hired chef, making the experience even more relaxing and luxurious. Some of my favorite moments were spent reading on the shaded deck, soaking in the peaceful surroundings. Given the warm Costa Rican climateâtemperatures were consistently in the low 90sâthe air conditioning was a welcome necessity. The setting was pure magicâjaw-dropping beauty everywhere we looked, with peaceful, unspoiled beaches perfect for long walks and quiet moments of reflection. It was the ultimate place to unwind, recharge, and fully embrace the serenity of the ocean. If youâre looking for a place that offers both relaxation and awe-inspiring scenery, this is it. We canât wait to come back!
Great communication with Mary the property manager and the owner!
We rented this house 10 years ago and always wanted to return. This was our second trip and it did not let us down location location location absolutely Beautiful!!
Wow, what a fantastic stay at Villa Esperanza. The house is beyond beautiful and the location on the beach is amazing. Pictures do not do it justice. Mary, the house manager, is incredibly helpful. We loved having meals prepared by Chef Sebastian and a day trip to Palo Verde through the driver Mary suggested was also great. We had a fun time doing ATV through Conchal Fun. We had great breakfasts at Corazon and dinners at Villa Deveena, Cafe Playa Negra and Mycelium. But some of the best time was just hanging at the house, watching the surfers and walking on the beach. Thank you Lenora and Mary for a wonderful vacation. We can't wait to visit again!
The house was unbelievably beautiful! We all felt like we had walked into a postcard. Mary was so helpful and responded promptly when I had any questions. If you are looking for a quiet retreat to the beach that is convenient to Tamarindo, this is it. It was fun to sit on the balcony and watch the surfers while drinking coffee in the mornings. I have zero complaints about this property. We all would highly recommend it to anyone looking for paradise.
Great location, extraordinary property, very nice host, incredibly accommodating! And Playa Negra is the best. Very close walk to main surf breaks and Hotel Playa Negra for food and drink.
The house was amazing and we all had a really great time. We played hise and seek since it was so big. We were all comfortable and the decor was gorgeous. The kids loved the pool. The ocean swimming spot was about a 10 minute walk. The sunsets from the house took our breath away and the iguanas every morning on the rock wall were fun to see. Response to any question was fast and the two chefs (Ben and Arthur and Jen) were a must to have cook for you. Guti Tours, Mojo Surfing, Jet Skiing with Conchalfun.com and Ziplining are a must!!
We stayed at Villa Esparanza for a week at the start of October. Typically this is a super rainy period of time but we lucked out with only an occasional moment of rain.
The house is stunning and arguably the nicest house in the area of Playa Negra. It was a three minute walk to the solid surf spot and we found ourselves sitting in the pool waiting to time our sessions.
The layout of the house provided tons of space and the house is so large we didn't even fully maximize areas. Three of the rooms are almost identical and have their own private bathrooms.
The region of Playa Negra was perfect with numerous quality restaurants and a good launching point for other regions in the guanacaste area.
Only drawback for our stay was the building of the house next door and the construction noise you get if you stay on the west side of the house. They are building fast and imagine won't be much of an issue after the end of this year.
We just returned from a 7 day stay at beautiful Villa Esperanza. The house is just as described and the photos are very accurate. Rooms are big and comfortable and it has everything you need to have a great time. It is in a gated community with a mix of house sizes and styles. It is located in a fairly remote area. You will be traveling on a lot of dirt roads! The beach in front of the house is very rocky, but there is a more sandy beach a short walk down or a 5 min drive to Lola's beach grill. Mary and her staff are extremely helpful with developing an itinerary, making reservations for tours, assisting with any issues you might have. We also had a private chef (Ben from PasCam Catering) come two nights, which I highly recommend. Despite the remote location, there are several fantastic restaurants close by.
My only complaint about the house is there is a house being built next door and there is some construction noise associated with this. It's not terrible, but they start when the sun comes up at 6:00am and it's something to be aware of. They were not there every day or all day. This is, of course, temporary.
Everything was just as described in the listing And Lenora and Mary went out of their way to make sure we had a good time during our stay. I would definitely recommend this property to friends and family and hope we get the opportunity to go again.
We had a lovely stay in January at this home. It was very comfortable and the view are incredible!! We had dinner chef Garret prepare dinner 2 nights and Jen dropped by food another night. Both were delish! Mary, the property manager was very, very helpful arranging excursions and food. âHorseback riding with Andres & his father Jesus of Guti tours was the best thing we have ever done on a vacay! We love every minute of our time there.
We did a last minute trip to CR between Christmas and New Years. Lenora and the house managers were absolutely wonderful to deal with. They were incredibly helpful in setting up activities, and helped us set up amazing chefs. The house is beautiful, well furnished, and well stocked! All of the bedrooms are beautiful and extremely comfortable. The kids enjoyed being able to walk down the beach to a fantastic surf break. The beach in front of the house is amazing and quiet. Do not hesitate to book this gorgeous home!
Go to Playa Negra, stay at Villa Esperanza. Stunning beaches with plenty of stretches of soft sand interspersed with outcrops of ancient black, volcanic rock. And a villa, the word house doesnât do it justice 10 yards from the beach. 3 true master suites, a well stocked kitchen, verandas, indoor and outdoor eating and gathering areas, and very well maintained. We loved this place, and we get around. My wife and I are often asked if weâd go back to a place. Our stock answer is no....thereâs too many places to explore in the world. Weâll make an exception for this place.
We rented Villa Esperanza for almost 2 wks in June. It was a fantastic experience. The house is gorgeous & huge! The views are spectacular. The kitchen was well stocked. The property manager is very responsive and answered every question we had. Some highlights:
1) Mary offered to do initial grocery shopping for us & it was well worth the fee charged. We ordered wine, beer, food to cook for dinner the first night and breakfast the first morning and snacks & it was a godsend. Once you make the drive from the airport on those rough roads and see the amazing views, you donât want to head immediately back out to get food. You want to put on your suits and jump in the pool & watch the surfers!
2) We did a triple tour with pura adventura (about 20 min drive) and it was fantastic. Best zip lining weâve ever done with panoramic views of the canopy. We also did a fun ATV tour with them & horseback riding. Highly recommend.
3) as mentioned, the kitchen is truly gourmet & well stocked and for a rental, the knives are decent. We cooked almost every night, enjoying the ocean views as we prepped and cooked. The only drawback is that there is no hood on the stovetop and no place for the smoke/steam to go which makes cooking bacon and sausage in the morning a bit problematic.
3) the house is very spacious. We had 9 people & were very comfortable. There is a beautiful outdoor table that seats 12 and we ate there every night. I was disappointed that we couldnt eat dinner at that beautiful circular table in the photos. Unfortunately there is no light in the room, making it difficult to eat dinner since it gets dark at 6:00.
4) villa Deevena is a wonderful restaurant in playa Negra with a Michelin trained chef and his family. Itâs open air in a beautiful setting, unpretentious, extremely pleasant staff and phenomenal food (get the octopus). We loved it so much that we asked Dean (the owner/chefs son) if his dad would do a cooking lesson for us and he did! We met at 9:30 in the morning & he had us prep the veggies and cook & amazing lunch of lobster, shrimp, scallop, grouper and octopus with a red curry vegetable sauce, roasted butternut squash with julienned veggies & mango cobbler for dessert and one drink! The entire experience was only $50! Chef Patrick rocks!
Many more tips but Iâm out of room! Beware that you are in a remote area & the nearest grocery store is 30 min away - but thatâs part of the charm. Bring books!
This house was a dream. Beautiful home with tons of room for multiple families, great pool, a ping pong table and perfectly located for nightly sunset watching. Close walk to surfing and boogie boarding with a great little hotel restaurant after the waves. Mary was always available to answer questions and provide recommendations. We had a Chef Garrett come in on our last night and cook the most amazing Costa Rican food. Fabulous vacation!!!
Costa Rica is our happy place, and Villa Esperanza increased our happiness! It is a beautiful luxury home that was extremely comfortable. Lenora and Mary were so accommodating with whatever we needed and our vacation was perfect. From our chef, Garrett, to breakfast at Cafe Negra, to swimming in the pool and jumping waves-we will be back!
Our family of 11 spent our spring break at this lovely home. It was the perfect set up for three couples and our children. LOVE the bunk room. We hosted our nephew's baby dedication and couldn't have asked for a better place! Mary was wonderful to set up the actives and made sure our trip was in order. Loved Michelle, the chef, who prepared fresh and delicious meals to accommodate various tastes and preferences. Loved Villa Esperanza and Costa Rica! Pura Vida!
