Whitby has so much to offer all year round and is a very popular place to visit with its many festivals and events, such as the Folk Festival, the Whitby Regatta and the bi-annual Goth Weekend. There is a large selection of pubs offering live music, good food or a quiet drink, quaint antique and gift shops, and famous fish and chip shops nestled amongst the cobbled back streets and main shopping areas. The local tour bus is an excellent way of visiting some of Whitbyâs highlights, including the stunning abbey and St Maryâs Church, positioned on the cliff top where you can enjoy spectacular views over Whitby and out to sea.
There are many pretty resorts dotted along the coast, including Sandsend, Runswick Bay, Staithes and Robin Hoodâs Bay, which are great for exploring our maritime history, including Captain James Cook, smugglers and pirates. There are water sports, surf schools and even whale watching trips to be found along the coast. The North York Moors National Park and surrounding area is a haven for walkers and cyclists, and many walks can be accessed from your doorstep, including the Cleveland Way, a riverside walk along the River Esk and a lovely coastal walk along the Cinder Track between Whitby and Scarborough, via Robin Hoodâs Bay.
Travel by steam train into the heart of âHeartbeatâ country or take a fishing trip out to sea on one of the many boat trips that leave the harbour. Falling Foss Waterfall, Roseberry Topping and Dalby Forest are just some of the natural beauty attractions in the area. The traditional seaside town of Scarborough is just along the coast with its open-air theatre as well as two large bays of contrasting styles. Beach 3 miles. Shop, pub and restaurant 200 yards.
