Bad Langensalza is a spa town in the Unstrut-Hainich district of Thuringia. It is the second-largest town in the district after the district seat, Mühlhausen, and serves as the regional centre for its southeastern part. Bad Langensalza is one of the most historically significant towns in the Thuringian Basin, as evidenced by the rich historical architecture in its old town. With a walled area of just over 50 hectares, it has the third-largest old town in Thuringia after those of the neighbouring cities of Erfurt and Mühlhausen. As one of the “Waidstädte” (towns with a fur trade charter), Bad Langensalza was very prosperous, which allowed for the construction of large churches and an imposing city wall made of Langensalza travertine, which was quarried directly to the southwest of the old town. Bad Langensalza is known for its spa facilities, such as the Friederiken Spring. Another attraction is the Rose Garden with its Rose Museum. Bad Langensalza also features an arboretum, a magnolia garden, a travertine garden, and the Japanese Garden. The Friederikenschlösschen houses the visitor centre.
The Friederikenschlösschen is a late Baroque pleasure palace built in 1749–50 for Friederike of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg in front of the eastern city wall. Other attractions in Bad Langensalza include, for example, the “Unter dem Pflaster” city and cellar tour or the Rumpelburg Children’s Adventure World, Thuringia’s unique and exciting play paradise featuring indoor and outdoor play areas where children and adults can play, climb, slide, run around, and participate in craft activities. Other attractions in the immediate vicinity include the Hainich National Park, with a variety of hiking trails and the Hainich Treetop Walk at Thiemsburg.
