Harbor views + stylish interior + boat lounge

Situated in the heart of a small lobster fishing village, Bridge View is a stylish, 3 bedroom cottage with a renovated scallop boat lounge. Built in the 1890s, Bridge View was recently renovated and decorated to reflect the nostalgia and aesthetic of midcentury Maine.

While Bridge View is the perfect place to just unwind and watch the lobster boats go by, it's also ideal for experiencing Downeast culture. Each morning, go for a short stroll around the fishing village. Breath in the salty sea air and photograph the sea captains hauling in their catch. Buy fresh lobster or shellfish straight from the pier. If you’re looking for more energetic pursuits, kayak Western Bay's countless coves or hike Great Wass Island, a renowned nature reserve connected to Beals by bridge. You can also take the lobster and shellfish hatcheries tour at the Downeast Institute or sample New England’s #1 rated lobster roll at Bayview take-out just down the street. ("Best Lobster Roll in Maine/Massachusetts" - USA today). Coastal boat tours are also available including puffin, seal, whale and lighthouse tours.

Bridge View and Beals are truly unique. The town of Beals is blissfully free of the tourist hordes that crowd most Maine towns in the summer and is the perfect base for visiting other popular Downeast destinations. Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park are just a little over an hour away. Drive the opposite direction up Route 1 to the historic coastal towns of Eastport, Lubec, and Campobello State Park, FDR’s beautiful summer home. The towns of Machias (host to famous Helen’s restaurant) and Cutler (home of Captain Andy Peterson’s popular Puffin Tour) are both just 30+ minutes away. But wherever you go, you’ll never be far from Maine’s dramatic, rocky coast or boulder-strewn blueberry barrens.

The host was amazing and very accomodating. Everything we needed was on site, house was very clean and orderly. Quiet neighborhood, very freindly community, and awesome views. The neighborhood deer and the boat lounge were added bonus to our stay.

What an amazing stay! The house is so charming and impeccably decorated. It has everything you could possibly need for a short or long stay. There are beautiful views of the harbor, and the hosts provided any information you could possibly need to make your stay easier from itineraries to restaurant recommendations. 10/10 I can't recommend more!

We had a wonderful stay at the cottage. The living room was comfortable with a view of the bridge and working harbor and the kitchen was well-outfitted. We enjoyed exploring all the furnishings and decor! The hosts provided fantastic information about the history and current attractions in the area. The weather didn’t let us spend much time on the boat but it was fun to have it there. We hope to stay again in the future.

Having never been to Maine we chose this location somewhat blindly to stay at while in the Jonesport area. Idyllic, yes, but it was SO MUCH MORE! We fell in love with Bridge View. Not only does it retain the feel of an old fishing village, there are treasures in every nook and cranny, and the hosts encourage their guests to explore. Each day we found something new, from 50s and 60s comics and magazines, to old albums and a turntable, to many books on the history of the “Downeast.” The hosts provided guides for eateries, hiking trails (Seaduck Point is enchanted), to unique things to do and see, but the best was that our host provided personal suggestions that helped us as we ventured out into the area. And there’s a boat, which seemed strange to us but as we drove through Maine we learned this is a common sight. This boat has been made into a small, nicely stocked bar. The deck of the boat provided an elevated place to sit where you could see the the water, the uniqueness of the island, and a harbor dotted with boats. I’m a big guy, so getting down into the boat was not an easy task, but I loved the sunset from up top. And, after seeing the magical night sky, without the city light pollution, I wondered if I had ever seen the stars before. This is a one in a million find! It was just two of us, but Bridge View could easily have slept 5, maybe 6. There is so much to do in this area, you’ll have to do some driving, but the scenery is rich with history and personality.

Wow! We enjoyed a great week at Rose Cottage. It’s a perfect place to explore Downeast Maine. Beds are comfy, house is immaculate, kitchen fun to cook in (love the vintage touches AND it’s quite functional as there are lots of pots, pans etc to make delicious meals). (As a side note, the WiFi worked great when we needed to attend to a few work related matters while away.) Best of all, the fresh Maine air and views of the water from the house can’t be beat.We took advantage of Rich and Julie’s detailed itinerary suggestions and enjoyed sailing on the Polaris Jack, visiting Jasper Beach, hiking Great Wass island and touring the Downeast Institute (to name a few). Highly recommend this rental for anyone looking to unplug and enjoy exploring this special part of Maine.

Overall a decent stay. The property is not on the water and the views of the water are pretty limited unless you climb the steep stairs to the outside lookout deck. The property is located in a neighborhood with a lot of houses right next to it and was advertised as having air conditioning which it did not have, just a couple fans. The trash in the outside bin had not been collected / removed for quite some time when we arrived, it smelled horrible, and was never removed during our three night stay (a bummer but something we were not surprised to see from non-local owner / operators). The recommendations for purchasing lobster directly from the wharf down the street was good (except on Sundays). The house had a lot of amenities but felt a bit cluttered to us. The one small bathroom and no dishwasher didn't seem adequate for the size / price point / marketing of the property, but the owner did provide plenty of towels and cleaning supplies. The cleaning person arrived before checkout time and seemed like were frustrated we weren't out yet. We would probably chose to stay somewhere else in the future but commend the owners on their marketing efforts which were top notch!

Could Not Have Loved it More

A great property and amazing hosts! Rich and Julie are top tier hosts. Great communication in terms both of clear and detailed info and in warmth and good energy. The location is super charming and the house is perfect. Not only clean, comfortable, cute, and well appointed - it's also well *curated*. I loved the eclectic decor - mid century mod overall, but with a lot of nods to island's nautical history as well in the art and objects around the house. A number of nice art and design books, etc. in the living room. It's apparent that a lot of time and attention were put into creating a space that felt authentic and celebratory of the region's culture and history, while also being low key stylish. Rich and Julie have anticipated pretty much anything a guest could possibly need for cooking and/or entertaining, and they also put together a great and very detailed collection of binders with a ton of info about the house, the island, and the entire region. There are also games and movies on CD (we enjoyed "Keeping the Light" - an art film based on the true store of a female Jonesport lighthouse keeper), and a load of fiction and non-fiction books perfect for a rainy day indoors. The island has gorgeous nature trails and LOADS of deer! I was thrilled to wake on morning to six of them casually munching on brush in the side yard just outside my window. An A rental with A hosts.

Good house, remote location

Overall the house was good and had everything we needed. The interior was well decorated and fit the area. The boat was a fun little add on and we watched the sunrise from the upper deck. The house is pretty remote so if you are looking for restaurants close by you will struggle to find anything

A treasure all its own!

First - the host could not have been more helpful, and created a great resource library for everything Maine! Second - the house was just fun, although the stairs were a little daunting for aging knees. Third - inside the house was a fun treasure hunt. We so enjoyed staying there. Comfortable, cozy. Beds great, shower very good. Little touches - fabulous. Fourth - Beal's Island was such a great retreat from the busy world we live in. Down to earth folks, hard working, pride in their life. Enjoyed it all!

Perfect Downeast retreat

We loved our late summer getaway to Beals. The house is well-stocked and chic, with quirky mid-mo details (and gorgeous harbor views) everywhere you look. Rich is an exceptionally attentive host, providing various itineraries depending on your interests (hiking, beaching, etc.) as well as securing several discounts and perks (free bottle of wine!) with local vendors. Visitors should be prepared to drive to most local attractions; Beals is definitely a more remote location. And larger parties should note that there is not a dishwasher. Neither of these bothered us, because quiet and peaceful was what we were after, and we're apartment dwellers used to handwashing dishes...but it might be an issue for others. Check-in and out was a breeze.

Wonderful House, wonderful host

Rich and Julie are the ultimate “virtual” hosts, they have well crafted guidebooks for Downeast Maine that were invaluable. The house is excellent including the record player and the vibe the house creates. From Beals and beyond the region is well worth a visit and we hope to be back to the region/house in the not too distant future!

Amazing Experience

We loved everything about our stay here. The house is fantastic, and a mid century paradise for those of us who love that style. The house was very comfortable, and very clean. It rained our whole week, so we didn't have a chance to use the outside spaces, but they appeared to be very nice. There was a herd of deer that foraged and played in the brush immediately surrounding the house all week, which was fun to sit and watch. In particular, there was a piebald deer, which I had never seen before. Super cool. We loved the hiking in the area. Many, many amazing hikes within a 30ish minute radius. Rich provided a ton of resources for helping us to enjoy our stay, and was very helpful and communicative. I highly recommend staying here. Thank you Rich and Julie for sharing your adorable home with us.

Serene in Maine's Downeast

We highly recommend staying at Bridge View on Beals Island. Lovely home in a picturesque and serenely quiet location. Great deck and private yard. Rick is a fabulous host and very responsive to questions. House is centrally located for anyone who wants to explore Downeast Maine. We had great food at Helen's in Machias and Chipman's Wharf in Milbridge.

A Little Jewel in a Hardworking Lobstering Village

We enjoyed our 5 night stay at Bridge View very much. The presentation and photos on VRBO are what first drew us to this property and village. The home is beautifully appointed with Rose family treasures and outfitted with the all necessities that anyone would need. Rich, our host, took great care in providing us with information before our trip and in binders at the house. Beals is a fascinating look into a very friendly, hardworking seafaring community, albeit somewhat removed from some conveniences and attractions. Since we’d already visited the usual tourist areas in Maine on two other vacays, it was the diversion we were looking for. Our favorite dining was eating our own lobsters from Barney’s Cove. Our favorite hike in the Beals area was Seaduck Point with a beautiful view and a pebble beach. Favorite more distant points were Long Point Preserve and Jasper Beach in the Machiasport vicinity. So many options, too little time!
