This cozy cabin minutes west of Alexandria is the perfect retreat for guests looking for peace, quiet, comfort and the powerful tranquility of the forest.

Built of aromatic cypress and cedar, the south Louisiana-inspired cabin boasts a comfortable main floor bedroom featuring a queen bed, a compact kitchen-dining space, a full bathroom with a shower offering an adjustable handheld showerhead, great water pressure and a handy seat to soak it all in. Steep Cajun-style steps lead to the loft, a special hideaway with a second queen bed, a dedicated workspace, and extra space for storage.

Stay cool with AC and warm with heating; stay connected with fast internet, dependable WiFi and a 43-inch Roku-equipped smart TV; and enjoy the convenience of an onsite washer and dryer.

Magnolia Cabin is a lovely space, but the real treasure is the thriving forest it sits in. The hosts purchased 11 acres, simply to preserve it and enjoy the flora and fauna it offers. Best yet: the property connects on its north end to the expansive Kisatchie National Forest; deer, foxes, opossums, armadillos and creatures large and small are at home here. Birdsong can be expected each morning. Eagles, hawks, woodpeckers, cardinals and so many other bird species are regular sights.

Enjoy this paradise from the porch or walk the mile-long loop trail for the fuller experience. Benches at ideal locations offer the chance to sit quietly and let the forest do the talking.

If this isn't enough, drive 10 minutes into the Kisatchie to hike, bike, swim, kayak, fish or whatever -- it's all there.
