Iâm rather at a loss at the rave reviews of this place. Itâs a beautiful looking, but quite basic set of college accommodation - not a hotel. That means practical things like no reception/ arrival after 8pm, breakfast only from 8-9:30, and check out at 10.
All of that wouldnât knock it down significantly for me were it not for some poor design / maintenance issues with my room (309).
The heating pipes hiss loudly even when switched off. The toilet dripped all night; then ran constantly keeping me awake. The extractor fan randomly switched itself on and off all through the night. The shower was missing a washer, which meant it shot out water sideways from the bottom of the hose. The water temperature regulation was totally shot and moved between Luke warm and scalding hot. The curtains donât black out.
All in all I had one of the worst nightâs sleep in any paid accommodation of the year (and I stay in a lot). At ÂŁ139 it would have been slightly pricey but okay had I actually been able to sleep - which is after all the most basic requirement of any accommodation. As it was, it was terrible value for money and I would not recommend it to anyone based on my experience.
Amazing to be able to stay at one of the colleges in Cambridge, but since it was a shared bathroom, and there was no sink in the room, I had to go out of the room to get water for the kettle or just to wash my hands, so that was quite inconvenient. And also you had to take the room key every time you left the room which then cut off the electricity in your room.
We loved our stay! My spouse and I were initially unsure about the shared bathroom, but it turned out to be a non-issue. The grounds were delightful, and while the room was small, the design made it feel just rightâcozy and well thought-out.
Breakfast was a highlight: the morning walk to it added charm, and the meal itself brought real joy. The location was excellentâpeaceful yet well-connected.
I would absolutely recommend this place to friends visiting the area.
Tip: Shop around for puntingâprices can go as low as ÂŁ20âÂŁ25 if you look!
Room in a dormitory in Jesus College. Access to private grounds, breakfast in their dining hall. Quite reasonably priced. Whatâs not to like here? The shared bathroom. Other than that, it was pretty great.
Fabulous accommodation in great building. Lots of thoughtful touches in the room ie plenty of tea and coffee, great kitchen set up in the apartment rooms. Canât fault the venue. Great breakfast and all staff very helpful.
The accommodation is in a fabulous location, easy for all the sights in Cambridge. Would definitely stay again.
Expectations should be set low for college accommodation at Cambridge. It is not luxury but it was better than what I received as a student. The breakfast in the historic main hall of Jesus college was the best!
What a serene hotel in the lively city of Cambridge. The rooms overlooking the courthouse are particularly lovely, simple but good. Itâs a great base for any visit to the city. The only downside was the late start of breakfast service. We would have loved to grab a bite at 6:30 AM before heading out.
