Another fantastic stay.

We stay at the hotel once a year as a treat. It’s such a unique and friendly hotel with fantastic staff. It’s a very old hotel but they keep it updated but somethings like not having walk in showers might put some off as the shower is a curtain around the bath but that just adds to the charm for us. Chester is a lovely place to visit and the hotel is in a great location.

Disappointing

This is a very grand hotel. It looks amazing when you first arrive. However it’s not worth the high price to stay there. Upon looking closer it’s in serious need of an upgrade. The wallpaper and carpets are heavily stained throughout the hotel. Our room (338) was very dark, with a lack of lights and electric plug sockets. The bathroom was dirty. The grime on the bathroom door and round skirting boards was unpleasant. The shower over the bath was dangerous to use, it need some type of slip mat. The positives.. the location. You can’t get any more central than this. The beds are very comfy. Would I stay again, unfortunately not. I think £450 for two rooms for one night in a sub standard hotel is excessive and there are probably nicer places to stay.

Upon arrival, the walk from the car park to reception is long, with worn and dirty corridor carpets and decor that shows signs of aging. The stairwell, however, with its beautiful chandelier, did offer a glimpse of grandeur. Reception was disappointing: while another couple was escorted to their room, we were simply handed a key and told to find our way to the 2nd floor, back up the stairs we’d just come from, to the furthest corner of the hotel. Additionally, they required a £100 refundable deposit, which felt unnecessary. The deluxe room didn’t meet 5-star expectations. While the bed was comfortable and the dressing area lovely, the carpet had noticeable drip stains, and the bathroom was in need of attention—broken marble around the sink, a loose toilet seat, and a very shallow bath. We had reserved a table at the Brasserie for a special celebration, intending to dress up for the occasion. However, when we arrived at 8 PM, we felt overdressed among diners in shorts and t-shirts. While comfort is important, we believe the hotel would benefit from a modest dress code—perhaps smart casual after 7 PM—ensuring a more cohesive atmosphere and better experience for guests. The main course was excellent—hot and flavorful—but the drink prices were excessive. I was also disappointed with my dessert: the strawberry pavlova, which contained just one strawberry.

We stayed here to celebrate our wedding anniversary. I had booked a superior king bedroom but they had upgraded us to a suite which was so special, there was a card in the room congratulating us on our 16th anniversary. Such lovely touches to make the experience truly memorable. The bed was huge, comfortable and clean. The suite was spacious with a great view of the beautiful city of Chester. The breakfast was very tasty from the freshly squeezed orange juice to the home baked pastries. I would recommend the Chester Grosvenor to everyone and anyone, particularly if you are celebrating something and want a memorable experience. Thank you to all the staff for making our stay so enjoyable.
