âWe really enjoyed our stay at Wilson Cottage. An ideal configuration of bedrooms for our group. Would use again!"
"We had a lovely time thank you. It was very easy to book the cottage"
"A great stay. Home from home!â
"We had a great holiday and would recommend the house"
Wilson Cottage owes its name to Richard Wilson, Victor Meldrew in âOne Foot in the Graveâ, which was filmed here. Victor Meldrewâs house was located just around the corner, and this cottage is featured in the 1991 One Foot in The Grave Christmas Special, covered in snow.
During the extensive restoration and refurbishment works the whole roof was removed, along with many interior walls, the back wall taken down and the house extended on both floors, doubling the floorspace on the ground floor, meanwhile the front elevation was restored to itâs former glory, wooden sliding sash windows reinstated and the whole exterior repointed as well as a new roof built. The contemporary design of the rebuild and extension is reflected throughout the interiors, with large open plan spaces, full width sliding/folding doors to the garden, contemporary open fireplace and reclaimed timber floorboards throughout.
The kitchen/dining/living space has plenty of space for a family group to dine all together at the table. Theres a cosy central fireplace for winter and the full width sliding folding doors accessing the large deck are wonderful when the weather turns warmer.
At one end of the room is the kitchen, which has fitted units with granite work surfaces and a freestanding Ikea stainless steel kitchen unit providing ample work surfaces and storage. There is a wide range cooker with a single very large oven, a built-in stainless steel american fridge and freezer, integrated dishwasher and washer. The base and wall units house all the cooking and dining equipment needed for your break.
The lounge space at the other end has sliding/ folding doors to the deck, and open garden area. The lounge has a contemporary fireplace, television, with large settees facing each other so everyone can socialise and relax together.
There are four bedrooms at this large cottage, Three are double rooms, and the fourth bedroom is a bunkbed room which has full sized adult beds. The two larger front bedrooms each have an original fireplace a pleasant street view, one is on the on the ground floor. The two smaller back bedrooms have views across the gardens behind, one of these has the bunk beds, one has a double bed and also includes a desk.
The modern bathroom has a double ended bath with a shower over, heated towel rail, wc and basin. Downstairs, the cloakroom has a wc and basin.
There is off street parking on the driveway beside the house.
Neighbours held a disco party from 01.00 Sunday morning
Property was very clean and basic facilities. One of the double beds frame was worn out. Windows were sealed closed in upstairs bedroom. Great location. Unfortunately neighbours had a wild party- finished at 02.30am with another neighbour screaming "turn it down you fÂŁÂŁking muppets " Good location for young party goers.
The lounge room had an overpowering smell of wet dog. We had to cover the couches with the quilt covers to be able to sit down and take the rug out and mop the floor as the smell was awful. There were only the most basic of kitchen utensils - a few ancient, battered, cheap quality items. No tin foil, cling film or any such everyday items. The outside of the oven door became dangerously hot and I burned my hand on it. The microwave was miniature. The one casserole dish would not fit in it. The extractor fan in the shower room doesn't work. The shower head/hose would not fit into the riser holder so had to hold it over your head to shower. The glass shower screen is too short so water sprays out onto the floor. No hairdryer. The pillows were stained and some were so old and flat that they were doubled up. Old quilts used for mattress protectors. No curtains, only roller blinds that let light in all around the edges. All in all very poorly maintained, uncomfortable house with no nice touches and extremely poor value for money. I would not recommend this place
Good location for mini break. Not 10 mins to beach (as per details). You'll need to drive.. but good car park and lovely beach for all. Very small garden area which could be improved to make a more relaxing outside area. Back door also very stiff to close. Clean tidy and comfortable house ideal for break with friends
The location of the cottage was good. The living area looked tired & dated, the sofas had covers which were grubby & were uncomfortable. The garden is not enclosed so if you want to sit outside with your children or a dog itâs not really suitable. We also found a cigarette box with old dog ends in between the bed & side cabinet, (was meant to be non smoking inside) which in the current Covid times was not good & put us off so only stayed 3 nights instead of 4
My overall impression of this cottage is that it is tired.
The kitchen was adequate, everything we needed (except for a potato masher) was provided..
We had WiFi which was a bonus.
The 2 sofas were tired.
The beds were uncomfortable, thankfully we only stayed 3 nights.
It listed pets welcome, but itâs not pet friendly, the garden was open. Not a major problem , but an inconvenience.
The cottage for us was ideally located as we were visiting family in Highcliffe, if not for that I donât think we would have chosen this listing.
Overall everything worked but I felt for the price we paid it should have been more comfortable.
Lovely open plan space plenty of room for the 7 of us plus dog
Really nice area walkable to the beach
Nice sized bedrooms Plenty of parking
Would definitely stay again
