New Upscale Hobbit Retreat w/ outdoor Kitchen on Elk River 4 miles to Banner Elk
Nestled high on the bank of the Beautiful Elk River, there lies a 1,500 sq. ft. Hobbit Retreat carved into the hillside amid the Poplar trees. Enjoy spectacular views of the Elk River and be mesmerized by the white noise as it cascades over the bus-size boulders below the house. You can almost fish for the fabled rainbow trout from the living room or either bedroom, but there are plenty of good spots on the bank below. When the fair winds blow enjoy a real fireplace inside or on the covered outdoor living area, complete with a built-in gas grill, sink and 50" TV. Both bedrooms and foyer have 50" Samsung smart TVs and the living room's is 65". The play loft has a 40" Samsung smart TV with a PS4. The kitchen is stocked with everything needed for a banquet: a gourmet Zline range, double door fridge, wine (or beer) fridge, slow cooker, presto pot, toaster oven, programable coffee maker, and all the dishes. Or choose to cook outside on the built-in Bull-Stallion gas grill.
We had a great weekend trip fishing and relaxing in this cabin. There is quite a hillside you have to climb to get to the water but we could not have enjoyed the place more. The only negative was the timing of trees being cut down all day likely planned before our late booking.
Such a unique experience. Gave a weekend stay to my family of boys who love The Hobbit and anything adventure. The set up inside is so cozy and we loved having the fireplace outside. They really thought of everything to make our winter stay cozy and enjoyable. Enjoyed being close to the ski slopes as well so great location for that and some good restaurants nearby but feel somewhat secluded when youâre at the house which was nice.
We had a wonderful weekend at this location! The property was well stocked with linens, towels/washcloths, fire building materials, utensils and many other amenities. Our children loved the loft area with video games. I especially enjoyed the outdoor fireplace area with a TV and BBQ grill. We had great communication with our checkin and questions we had. Would highly recommend this location for anyone to try in the future!
This house is so unique and absolutely beautiful! There are so many more amenities than were listed, like heated bathroom floors, multiple hooks in every room (which was very helpful after a day of snowboarding), reclining leather sofas, etc. It is just so charming and inviting, we wanted to move in!
The Hobbit House is just as unique and interesting as the photos show! Loaded with all the amenities for a comfortable stay with tvâs in every room, games galore and our favoriteâŠ. The outside fireplace and kitchen.
We used it everyday and only cooked inside 1 morning.
We went post Helene and grocery stores were opened and a lot of hiking trails were in the stages of clearing. We loved Grandfather Mountain park, itâs worth the entry fee.
Adorable, awesome house!! The view, sound of the river, the cold water rushing over my feet while sitting on a river boulder and deer visits in the mornings were just what we needed!!
Weâll be back for sure!!
Hobbit Retreat was the perfect location for hiking the AT and for dining in Banner Elk. The sound of the river is wonderful from the outside seating areas, the kitchen was well-equipped and everything was clean and new!
Cute, quiet and peaceful. This house is not secluded but it sure feels like it when sitting on back porch listening to the river. There are not a lot of bells and whistles but what it does offer is relaxation. Taking a nice soaking bath, sitting down by the river or just waiting patiently for your burgers to grill, this small space delivers a big memory.

We had a lovely stay. This was our second trip, and even though we had one rainy day, we were able to enjoy our time together, culminating in eating dinner outside while enjoying a nice fire and watching the third Lord of the Rings movie. It was just cool enough to need a fire. All of us enjoyed it very much!
Unique awesome cabin close to everything. Beautiful trout river right in the backyard. We had a great time here and will be back soon. My wife and son didnât want to leave. The hobbit house with the heated bathroom floors gets 5 stars from us.
Fun, easy to slide into comfort. Truly just 2 lovely bedrooms with king size bed, the loft hardly qualifies except for kids or an easy to please adult, so, a little interesting for 4 adult women; we did ok. Living area cozy. Cool outside spaces, but we had lots of rain, so lotsa games, good food & drink. Thanks.
My husband took our son for a weekend ski trip with a few of his friends. Another dad went with them...EVERYONE (including the teens) had nothing but great things to say about the trip.
The boys had a blast fishing in the creek. Loved spending a day at Sugar Mountain. Property wasn't far at all!
Communication was GREAT! Will 100% book this property again!
We had a lovely time in this fun, truly accessible cabin. My mom was able to move about freely. I loved the kitchen and all of its amenities and my kids loved the loft space and the creek outside.
It was one of the best places we stayed in. The place was renovated, clean and beautiful. Convenience was a plus with nearby grocery stores and restaurants. Teresa's kindness and effective communication enhanced our experience.
We travelled to NC to celebrate my dad's birthday and hit the ski slopes, and this house was the perfect place for our stay! The hobbit theme is beautifully executed, the place was spotless and welcoming, the surrounding scenery is relaxing, and it's only 20 min from Beech Mountain! 100% would stay here again :)
The property and area is amazing. We visited with our adult children and really enjoyed the stay. The pictures do not do it justice. Plenty of space and close to so many things to do. We would stay there again.
We absolutely loved this place! The sound of the stream going by and the coziness of the house was exactly what we were looking for. And the bathroom floors are heated! Thank you for an amazing stay. We hope to come back in the future and maybe stay longer.
The Hobbit House is so cute! We were so pleased to find a place that was handicap-accessible, but there were still some drawbacks. My husband has a prosthetic leg and it was very hard for him to get around in the bathroom. The toilet is very low and the grab bars were not really much help, but we did manage to make it work. Since he takes his prosthetic limb off at night, he has to use the right side of the bed because he has no left leg. It was difficult to maneuver the wheelchair into that area on that side of the bed where he could transfer, but we slid the bed over a little to make room. Otherwise everything was fine. I know there wonât be that many people with a prosthesis, but there will be some. Handicapped doesn't just mean confined to a wheelchair. Our grandkids loved the creek, the water, rocks, and the outside fire! It was a very enjoyable trip for us all.
