The host cancelled our booking after we arrived, despite us having paid weeks in advance. We had tried to reach the host on a couple of occasions prior to arrival and got no response. To the hosts credit, she did put us in touch with another host in the same building, however we had to pay again out of pocket. We never saw the condo we booked, and had to follow up with Vrbo to get a refund. Renters beware.

This was a perfect place to stay for us. We were able to walk to fish, fruit, vege and handicraft markets as well as cheaper KK Mall. Plenty of places to eat. Twice we had freshly cooked fish& calamari at the harbourside market. It is located right in the city where we could see locals going about their daily business. The room had a view over interesting harbour with busy boats. We loved watching the boats as well as the market people. The room was clean however i felt some items of furniture were a little tired. There was a new smart TV we never turned on as well as cuckoo water purifier. There is also new modern washer and drier. There was not much water pressure in shower, but adequate as we were on the 20th floor. Sometimes the 3 lifts were slow due to so many holiday makers. We prefer apartment with space, a desk and eating table, rather than room in a hotel. We were only there to eat, sleep, wash clothes and rest between activities.
Freshly cooked red emperor, with rice, vegetables and calamari.
This time we had parrot fish sliced in half, one side steamed in lemon and ginger, other half grilled on bbq.

Renter beware.... Read the reviews, make better choices. This was an absolute miserable nightmare, it started with ZERO communication from the host, my wife and I were literally standing in the Kota Kinabalu airport after immigration with zero information from our host.. that's after almost 2 days of messages through the VRBO & Expedia porthole, it finally took VRBO management to call her and that was arduous, finally after 3 hours waiting at the airport we got apartment number and access information... That was the LAST TIME we heard from our host. The apartment looked ok, the Air conditioner was COLD, but that was about it, the unit looked clean however that was surface clean, there was a disgusting amount of rotten food still on the kitchen backsplash and under counters, the bathroom has mold and no one has EVER moved a piece of furniture to clean. The balcony was covered in cigarette ashes I messaged my host numerous times about things with no response, (LOVE WHATSAPP). it keeps a record of all communication. The unit was left with a half roll of toilet paper, again no response from our host. Do yourself a favor and pass on this and all ALAWA managed properties. We decided to leave and move on, after informing VRBO that it was a disaster the host said she had never received any messages from me... VRBO had to get into the middle and fix it, it's too much stress for a simple stay. The host is a liar and a horrible communicator
