The Boathouse Lodge on Madeline Island
The Boathouse Lodge sleeps 16 and is perfect for large groups and families.
For renturning renters, the boat house is no longer standing, and was damaged in a 2023 storm. The main house is roughly 3,300 sq ft and has 5 bedrooms, 1 full bath, 2 three quarter baths and a powder room. It features a large gathering room highlighted by a dual sided gas fireplace, fully stocked kitchen, a second dining/living space and a large deck overlooking Lake Superior. The indoor dining room provides a new beautiful dining room table with ample seating. Additionally, you may choose to dine at the patio table, taking advantage of beautiful Lake Superior. The main cabin itself is a rustic log cabin with extraordinary character and history. The 110 year old home boasts tall ceilings and was originally used as the living barracks for the loggers on the island. The structure was beautifully expanded in the 1960âs to include the additional living space and kitchen. While sitting by the gas fireplace you will be surrounded by 200+ year old logs or enjoy a cup of coffee on the large deck looking out over Lake Superior. Included in the rental is a separate, small sleeper cabin called the Dinghy. It is about 200 feet away from the main house, visible by a lit walking path. The house is perched at the top of the hill overlooking the beach, boathouse & lake. It sleeps 4 (1 queen and a twin trundle bed), has its own three quarter bathroom, microwave, small refrigerator, coffee maker & electric tea kettle. The 4 hatch windows allow for an extremely peaceful sleep with the sounds of Lake Superior nearby. The Boathouse Lodge has its own private and swimmable beach, great for families and small kids. Private beach access on Madeline Island is very rare. The property has over 350 ft of lakeshore of which over half is made up of a beautiful private beach. If you have ever swam on Madeline Island you will understand that this is the perfect swimmers beach. It boasts pure sand access into the water without the large rocks you frequently find on the island. The Boathouse and dock has created a haven of shallow swimming areas for all ages to enjoy, especially little ones. As of 2023 the boathouse was severly damaged in a storm and sunk. This was a devastating loss for the Madeline island community as it was over 60 years old and 1 of the last 2 boathouses on the island. If youâre looking for a peaceful getaway for a larger group with days filled relaxing on the beach and evenings by the fire (outside or inside!) the Boathouse Lodge is for you. This is a rare combination of a true cabin atmosphere with ample space for multi-family enjoyment capped off with a private beach. The cabinâs exterior is being freshly painted in Spring of 2022 and the interior has new couches and brand new mattresses. This property was formerly known as Chez Madeline and has been rented for years in the past.

Authentic rustic lodge with lots of charm, wonderful location and private beach on Superior. Had a couple issues with appliances but the host was available to resolve the issues.
Would highly recommend bringing your group here. The only thing that kept it from a 5 star rating is the boathouse. Unfortunately it had been destroyed in a storm prior to us arriving. Other than that everything was as advertised. You will love it!
Seven very old friends spent four nights at the Boathouse Lodge/Dinghy Cabin and had an enjoyable stay despite several infrastructure issues that need attention. The Lodge is spacious, with lovely views, quirky in the way of older cabins, has everything needed in a well-appointed kitchen, comfortable beds and a great deck overlooking the Big Lake.
The host, Erin was immediately responsive from my initial communication when we booked the Lodge. Local help was quick to arrive 3 times when the gas fireplace (much needed on cool nights) did not work, and ultimately needed replacement. Be sure to locate the space heaters for cool nights, as several of us spent a chilly first night under many blankets. By day three, two of the Lodge toilets needed plunging to flush, and a bathroom sink did not drain well. Cracked picture windows, holes in screens, and a broken door jam also need repair.
Not necessarily an easy feat living hours away, Erin to her credit was easy to reach, and great with communication.
Had a wonderful time with family at this amazing property!! Beautiful sunsets and cool nights with fire pit stories! Thoroughly enjoyed our time at the boathouse !
