Marfa May 2024

Posted May 17, 2024 on HomeAway
We enjoyed staying at this property, especially enjoyed the backyard. The check-in info said the property had a dishwasher and printer. It has neither. We made other arrangements for the item we needed to print. The lack of a dishwasher was no big deal for us but might have been if we had a bigger group.

House was clean and an easy walk to restaurants/shops. Marfa is quiet and this home with its relaxing backyard was so relaxing.

Marfa Magic

Posted Mar. 16, 2024 on HomeAway
The house was very comfortable and as advertised. We visited local attractions for hiking/exploring including Big Bend National park (about 2 hour drive) and Davis Mountain State Park about a 1/2 hour outside of Marfa. Restaurants are limited if you’re planning to eat out with most closed in Marfa on Mondays and Tuesdays. We used the gas grill at the house to make do. Internet was limited in the area but just fine at the house. Marfa provided a quiet, friendly and slowed down environment to remind us all what’s really important. We did go to the Marfa lights viewing station about 9 miles outside town on the last night and though we didn’t witness anything unusual, viewing the night sky full of stars and constellations in this whole area (including the station) is absolutely gorgeous. The Marfa lights viewing station had a pretty good size crowd and does provide restroom facilities as part of the structure if you’re planning to go. The Marfa Presidio county museum is another great stop for history buffs. Marfa is hard to explain- on the surface it’s a simple place loaded with history and very friendly people. All I know is I felt re-charged after experiencing it for a few days and would recommend it.

This is the second time we have stayed at the Austinite house. Love the location because it’s quiet.

Functional House, but very worn and in need of attention

Posted Oct. 24, 2023 on HomeAway
Thank you for sharing your home. Proximity to nearby attractions was great, and the neighborhood was very nice. Covered parking was a plus. But for review purposes I must say the home is very worn. Kitchen cabinet and drawer knobs were all very loose and kitchen drawers were ill-fitting. Generally, finishes are worn. Furniture and kitchenware seemed like a large collection of hand-me downs from folks that didn't want the items in their own home. Most of the window blinds would not raise or stay raised. Outdoor furniture was an odd assortment of ornamental iron chairs with no pads (small pillows were provided on the front porch). Door locks barely catch, and a door in the kids room (behind a shelf unit) was found to be unlocked and the chain lock ripped from the door trim. Grills (propane and a very small charcoal grill provided) were not clean and ready to go - fortunately I brought my own. I understand it's hard to keep things maintained in a small, distant town - but this home needs a lot of TLC.

Thank you for the feedback, we are sorry to hear you did not enjoy the design of our century old adobe home. I know not everyone has the same taste, as the things we love about the house are what you found worn. We believe the kitchen cabinetry is from the 1940's, probably 50 years newer than the house itself. We have Mikasa and Le Crueset cookware with hand made glass dishes from Mexico as a nod to the region. The furniture in the home has been collected by our family over decades (mostly Heywood Wakefield, Drexel, Blu Dot) and is certainly not unwanted. We will ensure that the grill is checked and the doors locked, you are correct maintenance is more challenging in Marfa. We will go check the shades/blinds repair as necessary.

The house was easy to find and the parking space was very nice. The landscaping and outdoor tables were very inviting. There was 4 in our party and we enjoyed the spacious bedrooms and common living and dining areas. There was plenty of hot water for us all to shower. My one an only complaint is the door lock. It took us multiple, multiple attempts to get it open and had to call the property manager for assistance. Detailed instructions would be good. Thank you, to the owners. We had a great time.
