We continue to upgrade the house with modern furniture and furnishing (inside and on the deck), new linens, electronics, dishes, cutlery, kitchen appliances, new AC, and BBQ.
We, the owners, live on-site in a classic island house and are available to provide information, arrange transportation and activities, borrow cooking ingredients/utensils and assist you any way we can to make your vacation as enjoyable as possible.

Roatan is very casual. You can go just about anywhere in t-shirt, beach coverup and flip-flops. Don't pack too much. Do bring a positive attitude and an open mind. Remember that Roatan is still part of a developing country.

FAQs:
Q: How do you get to Roatan? A: Lots of options but they vary by time of the year. The major airlines are American out of Miami and Dallas, United out of Houston, Delta out of Atlanta, Sun country out of Minneapolis, Sunwing or other charters out of Toronto and Montreal. Spirit Airlines to San Pedro Sula, HN, then CM Airlines or others here. This info changes often so email me and I'll try to help
Q: Do I need local currency (Lempiras). A: No, just bring US dollars (Canadian dollars and Euros are not generally accepted). Make sure the bills are in very good condition. There are cash machines as well. Make sure your bank knows your travel plans so they do not cancel your credit card for suspicious use. Credit cards are generally accepted for larger purchases but you can often get a better deal paying cash. If you'll be taking taxis, we can exchange money at bank rate for you to get you started, then just use US and get change in local Lempiras.
Q: What are prices there? A: Prices for groceries and meals out are about the same as in the US and Canada. If you buy local products it's cheaper, American products cost a bit more. Alcohol is generally much cheaper.
Q: How do I stay connected electronically (wifi, phone)? A: We have a fiber optic mesh system that lets you connect from several places on the property. We have upgraded to a upper level system but it is not US standard. I use various online communications systems - FB messenger, What's App, Zoom, Netflix...that work pretty well here. There are also lots of temp plans that you can get short term that work well here. Phone calls or minutes to US cost about $.10 - 15 cents a minute while not using local WiFi. Best to put your phone on airplane mode to avoid expensive roaming charges.
Q: Are Roatan and Sandy Bay safe? A: Yes, we think so. There is opportunistic crime mainly involving electronics left unattended. Rentals that are in local barrios or where people can pass freely very close to the house have more issues. Places with owners on site, dogs, and are well lit have very few problems. We, and our guests have had no issues with crime in 17 years. That said, use common sense as you would anywhere.
Q: What do I need to bring (and not bring)? A: Bring less clothes that you think you need. We have a washer and clothes line. Quick drying, light clothes, light rain jacket, slip on shoes, bug spray that works for you, necessary medications (although most are cheap here and do not require prescriptions) are key. We have snorkel gear if you want to check out the reef, but if you have a good fitting mask and snorkel, bring it. Don't bother with tie-on shoes, socks, jewelry, beach towels, or hair dryer.
Q:Are the bugs bad? A: The house is raised 10 feet and completely screened and on the beach with good breezes to minimize bugs. However, bring bug spray or you can buy it here for exploring. We keep the house very clean to deter any bugs inside, but leaving food and beverages out can attract bugs, so it's best to keep the house tidy.
Q: What should I buy when I arrive (and not buy)? A: Buy whatever you would like to eat for the first few days. We go to the store every couple days and are happy to take you along. The house is stocked with a water cooler, spices, condiments, sugar, coffee filters, oils, vinegar, soaps, cleaning supplies, paper towels, TP... If you need anything that is not there, just ask.
Q: Do I need an international drivers license to drive there? A: No. A valid drivers license from your country and state is fine.
Hosts were very welcoming and informative. Communication prior to our arrival and during our stay was timely and helpful. The property was clean, a beautiful setting and peaceful.
The house is really close to the beach and great inside. Very well equipped kitchen with bottled water dispenser. The high ceilings in the living room/kitchen are nice on a rainy day. In the evening you can sit either outside or on the screen porch. Ideal hosts: friendly and solicitous.
We had a wonderful time at the Spooky Channel guest house! The property was beautiful, exactly as described. Clean, comfortable and well maintained. Al and Sandra shared lots of valuable information both before and during our stay. It really helped us relax and enjoy our first trip to Roatan. The dogs were so sweet and well behaved. Best location on the island!
I wish I could give this spot 10/5 stars! Al and Sandra (and Hope/Molly) are the most wonderful hosts, they were super helpful and welcoming, and the house was well stocked. Kayaking out to spooky channel and snorkeling the reef, walking through their fruit trees, watching the waves from the porch - this place is a gem! We were close enough to everything we could want without being crowded, tucked away on their peaceful property a short drive from the bustle of the west bay/west end areas. If you're considering a trip to Roatan, this is THE place to stay.
Sandra and Al elevated the experience to a level Iâve never experienced with any other rental. From answering questions before we arrived, providing airport transportation (which wouldâve been confusing without them), giving us food recommendations, providing us with information about what we should get charged for taxiâs so they do not overcharge us, taking us to the grocery store, providing us with snorkel gear, just everything they did for us and to help us have an amazing experienceâŠ. Just all class. Unbelievable snorkeling out front, beautiful private beach area to relax, nap, read or get some sun. Fur babies to greet us every time we come out of the rental. Just was an all around glorious experience. I spent months researching, it was a great place to decompress.
Al and Sandra are great hosts and great people! Added plus for us was their two really sweet dogs. The guest house we stayed is so cute, too!! Everything was great. Highly recommend.
Large screened in porch made a perfect environment to read, relax and enjoy the view. Bedrooms are nice. Kitchen has everything. Fans are plentiful, so we didn't need the air conditioning. The hosts live on the property and were very accommodating. We had the perfect experience. Absolutely the best.
This place met and exceeded all expectations. The owners were A hosts!! When we come back to Roatan, we will be staying here again. Pictures and reviews do not do this place justice. %5 Stars all the way around.
Our stay at Al and Sandra's was everything I had hoped for. I truly could not have wished for anything better. I had wanted to be somewhere quiet but with easy access to West Bay and West End and snorkeling right out front. This met all those hopes, with a beautiful ocean view from the lovely, comfortable house. Al and Sandra were extremely helpful and friendly, while also being completely respectful of our privacy. And their dogs are sweethearts. Thank you so much for providing such a wonderful opportunity for folks to enjoy the island!
Recently spent a week at the Spooky Channel Guest House. It's easy to access and convenient to both east and west end island hotspots but we found the property to be our favorite. Al and Sandra were wonderful--helpful and available whenever we needed! The beach is shaded by palms and the fruit trees in back were a source of yummy snacks! Although accessing the water from the beach was discouraged due to turtle grass and some algae, the property's two-level dock was perfect for days in a hammock and access to the spectacular snorkeling reef. The breezes were strong while we were there ...only needed the A/C one night. A few helpful notes about the house (definitely not criticisms):Freezer/Fridge and oven are slightly smaller than traditional. Oven/burners require manual lighting of the pilot. Many of the carvings and artwork on the property are creations of a local artist who frequently walks by the property. Don' miss the chance to hear his story. When the season is right, coconuts and such may fall onto the metal roof--which can be startling at first!ATVs and even cars pass on the beach occasionally--particularly on cruise ship days. They do not travel ON the property but worth noting. Fell in love with the property and Roatan--so many artisans and local places to enjoy. Grab cinnamon buns at Sandy Buns and floating at Gingers beach bar & grill! And don't miss CocoFiber Arts gallery by Karen Coad. Such amazing original pieces...
