The Neighborhood:
Just a short journey from the mainland, the Isle of Bute is one of Scotlandâs most accessible islands and it offers far more than its compact size suggests. Though only 15 miles long and 5 miles wide, Bute is rich in history, culture, wildlife, arts, and music, making it a perfect destination for visitors of all ages.
The island boasts a traditional Victorian charm, with beautiful period architecture lining its streets. Many of these historic buildings have seen thoughtful restoration in recent years, adding to the islandâs unique character and appeal.
A highlight of the shoreline is the striking Isle of Bute Discovery Centre, an iconic 1920s circular building made of cast iron and glass. Lovingly refurbished, it now features a cinema, theatre, and interactive exhibits, celebrating the very best of Buteâs heritage and creativity.
History lovers will enjoy a visit to Rothesay Castle, complete with restored dungeons, thick stone walls, and an impressive great hall. Just a short stroll away, the Bute Museum offers further insight into the islandâs fascinating past.
No trip to Bute would be complete without exploring Mount Stuart House, a spectacular neo-Gothic mansion set amidst breathtaking gardens. Itâs an unmissable stop during your stay, offering a glimpse into the grandeur and elegance of Buteâs historic legacy.
Getting Around:
Reaching the Isle of Bute is simple and stress-free. The island is well-connected via a regular ferry service from Wemyss Bay on the Clyde coast. Wemyss Bay also has a railway station with frequent trains to and from Glasgow, making it a seamless journey whether youâre travelling by car or as a foot passenger.
The CalMac ferry takes around 35 minutes and offers a comfortable crossing with stunning coastal views. It accommodates both vehicles and foot passengers, and docks right in the heart of Rothesay, Buteâs main town.
Once you arrive, getting around is easy. Rothesay is very walkable, and taxis are readily available just outside the ferry terminal. The island is also served by a reliable public bus network, making it convenient to explore Bute without a car.
For those who enjoy a more active pace, cycling is a popular and rewarding way to see the islandâs beautiful scenery.
The apartment is ideally located with a bus stop just a minuteâs walk away at the bottom of the road offering regular services into Rothesay and beyond.

Had everything needed in the kitchen Odment of sets but it didn't matter not alot of teaspoonsBeautiful view shame about the derelict building to the bedroom viewBut the walks either way were good not for the unfit. Hill was very steep borh ways but worth the view.
Good sized apartment in heritage sandstone building. The upgrades include a very nice shower room and toilet. Two decent-sized bedrooms, one with double bed the other with two singles.Kitchen has a good range of appliancesGood modern TV on Sky and the WiFi is very good too.But the views!! Absolutely stunning!!!We had one minor issue with the heating controller but host was able to help remotely(Hint - download the Vrbo app - it allows you to quickly message your host)Recommend for couples or family - if youâre elderly and not driving though the hill up to the property is quite demanding. Worth it for the views and the peace and quiet though!
Honestly everything was 5 star. Check-in instructions made complete sense, building & street was very peaceful, flat was clean. Couldnât get response from manager to find out where hoover & cloths lived. Co-op at the bottom of the road a big plus.
This apartment was ideal for our 3 night stay while we walked the West Island Way. Comfortable, bright and cosy, with everything we needed for our stay. Fabulous view over Rothesay, the ferry terminal and beyond. Definitely worth the short steep walk up the hill to get there. Would happily return.
We all enjoyed our relaxing three night stay in this lovely apartment. The views from the large windows are wonderful and the location is perfect - quiet yet close to ferry, shops, eateries etc. The apartment had everything we needed and was comfortable and spotlessly clean. We were sorry to leave & hope to return.
