Kasteli of Emporio â Santorini
The Kasteli of Emporio is located in the village of Emporio in Santorini, in the southern part of the island, and is one of the best-preserved medieval fortified settlements in Santorini. It was mainly built during the period of Venetian rule (13thâ16th century) and functioned as a defensive settlement to protect residents from pirates and raids.
Architecture and Layout
Kasteli is essentially a small fortified, labyrinth-like village. The houses are built very close to one another, forming an outer âwallâ that functioned as a protective fortification.
Key features include:
Narrow, labyrinthine alleys that could confuse invaders
Vaulted passageways and arches
Small inner courtyards
White houses with traditional Cycladic architecture
Viewpoints overlooking the village and surrounding plains
At the top of the settlement stands the Tower of Nimporio (also known as Goulas), an old defensive tower that was used as a lookout point and refuge.
The Surrounding Neighborhood
Emporio is one of the largest traditional villages in Santorini, and around the Kasteli stretches a quiet neighborhood with a strong local character.
What you will see around the Kasteli:
Traditional houses and courtyards with bougainvillea
Small churches and bell towers scattered throughout the village
A sense of authentic local life, away from the islandâs most touristy areas
A short distance away lies Perissa Beach, famous for its black volcanic sand, while to the north of the village rises the Kasteli of Pyrgos in the village of Pyrgos Kallistis, another historic fortified complex.
âš Atmosphere: The area has a special charm â walking through the Kasteli feels like entering a small medieval labyrinth. The afternoons are very peaceful, and the sunlight falling on the white houses creates a truly authentic Cycladic scene.
