Crete â the southernmost island in Europe has âeverythingâ! Its bountiful variety of features includes mountain villages, long sandy beaches, rocky bays, beach-bar-boogie & nightlife. There are magnificent mountain ranges, water-sports, tranquil locations and clean swimmable seas. Bathed in clear sunlight much of the year, the climate is one of the best in Europe. The largest island in Greece, it is understandably a most popular travel and vacation destination.
Crete also has a magic radiance â truly! There is the supreme quality of the light here, the sharp rugged mountains meeting openly with clear seas. There is an abundance of wildlife, plants & flowers that are unique to the island. Breath in the ever-present scents of wild herbs, taste fresh fruit, the best of the world's olive oil and healthy, delicious cheeses. Enjoy the delight of sipping a Greek coffee at the roadside in a mountain village, the excitement and spillover of weddings and occasions, the history, the people and the world-sourced visitors. It is also a historian's and archaeologist's paradise.
Crete has a people noted for and conspicuous in their hospitality and tradition of welcoming visitors. The traditions and culture offered in music, art, food and crafts play a large part in this picture. It combines European ways with the uniquely local.
Because Crete is the largest of the Greek islands, it offers both developed tourist areas with resort hotels and also quiet coves, hidden beaches and invigorating mountain villages and plateaus that reward the discerning world traveller. Wondrous moments, those memorable combinations of time & place that provide you with enriching experiences, are yours - here - if you explore the island.
Makrigialos: A traditional Cretan village on the coast of the southeastern Crete. The village is built across the beach, and there are many wonderful and quiet beaches around it. The main beach is full of people in summer time and there are watersports, bars, restaurants, cafes, supermarkets & souvenir shops.
The nature around is beautiful with the southern Cretan Sea, the mountain side, and the natural forest on the north. You can also have the possibility to visit three traditional Cretan villages, and two archeological places in the village (the Minoan and the Greek Roman villa).
Beaches: There are five separate beaches in the immediate Makri Gialos area. The main beach, which is blue flag accredited and which stretches eastwards from the harbour for half a mile, provides golden sand and safe shallow bathing. There is on offer a range of water sports facilities in the summer season.
Nightlife: Makri Gialos is one of the quieter, less developed destinations in Crete, more suited to couples and families. The walk down from the complex at the eastern end of town is dotted with bars, restaurants, tavernas and most establishments also front onto the beach. Soon after passing the Splash Bar you reach the harbour area, a pleasant place to stroll around, with its own patch of sandy beach and collection of waterfront bars, tavernas and restaurants standing side by side.
Culture: Makri Gialos itself is a small town of around 1000 inhabitants who originate mostly from the surrounding villages. It wasn't all that long ago that the town was just a scattering of store houses and fishermen's cottages, and even today the local economy is based as much, if not more, on agriculture as it is on tourism. The area has been inhabited for centuries and is home to Minoan and Roman ruins, the former dating as far back as 1400 B.C. More 'recent' evidence of habitation can be found at the Kapsa Monastery, perched on the hill side four miles east of town, and believed to have been founded in the 15th century. Contemporary culture is represented by timeless traditional Cretan villages, such as Pefki and Agios Stefanos, which dot the mountain sides.
Walking: With coastline to the south and mountains to the north, there are plenty of opportunities to explore. Coastal walks over sand, shingle and rock are possible east and west from Makri Gialos itself. . For the only slightly less adventurous, gorge walks can be found at Pefki and Pervolakia, both around four miles from Makri Gialos.
Scenic Drives: Every road out of town is a scenic drive, either along the coast or up into the mountains. Our site manager can give you detailed route schedules, including where to go, where to stop for the best views, and where to visit.
We loved Grapevines, the villas are spacious, well managed and the pool and gardens beautifully kept and never busy. The beach is an easy walk and is sandy. Makrygialos itself is a delightful town, with many beachfront tavernas. There is even a Minoan settlement and Roman villa in the vicinity (the children weren't impressed by I thought both worth a quick visit and they're permanently open). The area is beautiful with beaches dotted along the coastline and beautiful mountains.
The property is as described and a whole lot more, our children (Girl 15 and Boy 12) really enjoyed the pool and the nearby beaches too. The little extras of DVD's CD's and books were great too. The house is well equipped and we felt totally at home over the 2 weeks we were here. There are lots of places to eat close by and numerous mini markets serving the local area. The on-site manager was very helpful. The owner responded to our questions and this was appreciated. The area is very laidback and if you have a rental car as we did you can take day trips to Knossos, Agios Nikolaos and other parts in the east of Crete. Totally recommended.
