We had a superior room wouldnât like to see what the standard rooms are like.
Shame really as the food we had evening meal and breakfast was really good
The George is a very attractive looking pub with a B&B. The bar area is quite appealing if not on the small side. I was kindly shown to my room. The room looked well presented. When I was left in the Family room I went to close the door, which wouldnt close unless the door was locked shut. Once that was overcome I went to go to the loo, imagine my surprise when I lifted the toilet seat to find some skid marks on the pan. The shower enclosure door was a quadrant door with 2 small double doors. Im a bit restricted with my movement so was pleased to see I didnt have to climb into a bath for a shower. I did however have to reinstall one of the shower doors as it was hanging by one wheel. Some limescale remover wouldnt go amiss. Other than that it was in reasonable order. I step back into the bedroom to see 1 out of 3 lightbulbs working. The room is well presented with a welcome folder on the desk. Its then I realise the carpet hadnt been hoovered and I dont think the skirting hadnt seen a duster in some time. I sit on the bed to nearly sink through the matress. I like a matress with at leastt some support.
When I checked in I was I was handed a menu and asked to pick my breakfast I was then told breakfast will be between 8 and 9. That pretty much rules out any business customers, unless they have all the time in the world. In summary an ok place if you dont look to closely to the detail.
Booked a family room, as the room was in a family friendly pub.
On arriving the room wasnât ready, there was a party in the bar area and lots of used drinks and 1/2 eaten meals on the bar, only one of the three bulbs in the light worked and the door lock was repaired with some form of cardboard and didnât lock easily. Some one came in and made up the second bed.The pillows and quilt were stained.
The family room is located directly above the bar, they clearly had a party on which we were not aware of prior to booking and the party went on until midnight, with very load music and some questionable singing, when people left they were very loud in the car park and took a while to leave, the staff could even be heard laughing and joking while cleaning up. There is also a light right outside the bedroom window which makes the room bright overnight. The child I was staying with is SEND and was very triggered by the noise and light. I felt being a family friendly pub we would have a fairly settled night and was not expecting the amount of noise that we had which made me unable to sleep. The the noise and lights were too much for the child and caused him distress and we ended up leaving at 12:45 in the morning as he could not settle and neither could I. I handed in my key on the way out to be asked if I had payed for my room and food, I explained I had paid when I booked and hadnât had any food and was just told to have a good night!
I would not recommend this property for a family !
Ignored email:
I'm afraid our stay was far from enjoyable.
We chose the George from lots of options because we wanted to stay in a pub where there would be dinner, a bar and the football without driving.
Soon after our arrival we were told the chef had called in sick so we would have to go elsewhere for dinner. That can't be helped but where was the Landlord to stand in and offer what was possible?
When we got back, I settled in to watch the football only for the person running the bar who said she was only there as a favour to call last orders at 9pm. Everything was being turned off by 9.35 and I missed the last few minutes of the football which had turned into an exciting game. I was told I could take my unfinished pint to my room but the mood was lost and I abandoned it. The football was not available on the TV in my room as she claimed. By the way, people who came in to watch the football were also told she was closing and left.
In the room, there were no cups for the kettle, the radiators were off (and electric heater supplied), the light above the mirror didn't work and the shower was the most useless I have ever experienced. In general the room was tired and needed refurbishing. I mean electric cables tacked to the skirting, exposed and loose central heating pipes, windows that need new hinges failing to block the noise of the road.
Why a bath? Why not a proper electric shower? The world outside the George is no longer the 1970s.
So, no, I'm afraid we won't be back.
The George Inn was an excellent choice for our first night in England, due to its proximity to Stonehenge and the reasonable cost. All staff were attentive and helpful. We enjoyed a late afternoon walk on the country lanes of Middle Wallop. I want to mention a few things that did not bother us but may matter to other potential guests:
- Room ("the family room"): because it was directly above the pub, we could hear music clearly through the floor until the pub closed. This did not bother us. The room was snug with the sofabed mattress open. Beds were comfortable, room was clean
- The Expedia listing explicitly said that breakfast was not included in the price, but the George Inn provided us with a beautiful breakfast spread: fresh berries, yogurt, juice, coffee & tea, and a full entree off of their breakfast menu. It was a really nice surprise!
Welcome and check in fine, evening meal and ales good. Rooms very well presented, warm and comfortable. Rather noisy until pub below closed, then peaceful. Pre-ordering breakfast the night before a little unusual and limited time of 0800-0900 not great for a Sunday morning. Full English breakfast decent, rather casually presented, luke warm tea, no toast? cereals etc not stocked and yoghurts out of date, so not tried. I didn't complain
The rooms are clean, comfy and beds comfortable. The food was excellent, both dinner and breakfast.
The team are very welcoming, Tabatha and Jane are excellent.
Thank you
It's an old pub so sound proofing isn't great (especially on a Saturday night) but the room was just lovely and the food (breakfast and dinner) was fabulous! Felt like a real find.
Nice place, pet friendly, good breakfast! Bed badly made and carpet needed a vacuum. Room not properly stocked - had to ask for mug and spoon. Comfy bed though and nice spicy soup for dinner. Barman and friends chatted loudly and banged around below my room until 2 in the morning. So bad nightâs sleep! Loudly banging front door to pub right below single room.
