A short walk from the cottage is Stroud Brewery on the canal, the quirky Felt cafe in the bend of the River Frome, the Remedy (Long table) a sharing food charity ( fun and funky) , the Ship Inn for a Sunday lunch roast. There is even the Burleigh Court Hotel for a nice evening drink, celebration dinner, even spa.
TO DO There is genuinely so much to do and see.... A Saturday morning a visit to the amazing Strouds' award winning farmers market 2 miles away is a must, if only to experience the Stroud buzz, and you can walk all the way there along the canal. (Tourist info in Stroud "Sub" Rooms) Wonderful walks on the beautiful NT common in AONB where cows and horses free roam from May to November , excellent eating out, attend an auction, as on TV, Berkeley castle, Wildfowl Park at Slimbridge, Westonbirt Arboretum, Woodchester mansion, Stroud brewery, picnics at Beaufort or Cirencester polo in the summer, vintage shopping, plenty of golf courses and well situated for visiting many picturesque Cotswolds villages too... Painswick & the Rococo gardens 15minutes away Tetbury is 20 minutes away, full of antique shops, & Highgrove nearby ( Tetbury woolsack races in May) Westonbirt Arboretum is 20 minutes away Badminton eventing is only 8 miles away too- The world famous cheese roll at Brockworth is 20mins away in May. Do look up Giffords travelling Circus April- September. Cheltenham Gold Cup festival is 22 mins by car. Badminton House is hosting its first RHS flower show this year 2026
We really enjoyed our week at Hillcrest Cottage. The decor is delightful, the kitchen is one of the best we have experienced in a rental, the views are lovely and the hosts very welcoming. There is only one thing I feel is worth saying which I hope will not be construed as a negative and should not at all deter potential renters either. However, when the GPS told us, âyou have arrived!â, we instinctively thought, âNo we havenâtâ!What we could see was not at all what we expected to see. The street view of the house is not what we expected from the photos, which are taken from the other side. But we noticed a small sign on one corner of the building that said âHillcrest Cottageâ so we cautiously went inside the gate and sure enough, there was the view, the garden, the house we had loved from the photos, etc. just as described. Book it and enjoy it!You will not regret it.
This cottage was ideal in every way, charming, quaint, loaded with every amenity we could need, and several thoughtful details provided by Tricia and Rob. The views at all times of the day are stunning and peaceful. We visited many other villages, took a day trip to bath and Stonehenge, and went for a delightful walk around the common.
The glorious view and sitting areas! Everything was beautifully put together with special touches, a well-supplied kitchen, nice welcoming basket, and quality furnishings. We really enjoyed our conversations with Tricia and appreciated her helpful insights about this lovely area and good walks that can end at Winstone's ice cream. Walk to the Felt cafe and sit outside by the stream. A top-notch cottage stay.
This cottage is exceptional in every respect. Inside the rooms have been decorated and furnished imaginatively; the kitchen is very well equipped and the beds are SO comfy. The garden is lovely as are the patio areas with breath taking views. Tricia, the host is delightful. She made us very welcome and insured that our holiday was a memorable and happy one.
I grew up not far from this amazing cottage and booked it to visit my parents who still live nearby. Tricia is a fantastic host who despite my local knowledge, was able to recommend lots of hidden gems for us to visit. The cottage itself is fantastic. Tricia clearly has a great eye for detail as the place was beautifully styled and filled with lovely little touches that so often get missed, house manual, full sized towels, dressing gowns, games, books etc, and spotlessly clean throughout. The standout is the location. It is without doubt a beautiful spot which can be enjoyed from the garden complete with swing chair and BBQ if you're so inclined. I wont go into detail about the local area, but the cottage is perfectly placed, close to everything Stroud valleys have to offer. You wont find a better property to rent or a more attentive host. Can't recommend highly enough.
The space is lovely and the view is stunning and inspiring. The kitchen is well outfitted and there are thoughtful touches throughout the home. Tricia and her family have clearly put a lot of thought and care over the years into outfitting it as a comfortable holiday cottage. She is also helpful with any questions or needs that arise and good about communicating. For female travelers... I found the home and area safe as a solo female traveler when my partner was away for part of our stay.
The only note is that it's not well suited for working remotely, especially with two people on calls. We recommend it for holidays only.
Absolutely beautiful area and home. It has been beautifully decorated and furnished. Patricia has been amazing; there was some confusion with our booking and we surprised her with our arrival but Patricia paid for our dinner at a locally recommended restaurant whilst she prepared the house for us. She was very apologetic and efficient in sorting us out and taking the time to make sure we were comfortable.
Thank you for a wonderful stay - we will certainly be back again in the future and recommending the property to our family and friends.
We had a great time at Hillcrest cottage over New Years. Though the weather was far from ideal, we enjoyed cosy nights in by the wood burner, listening to the rain and wind outside. The cottage is very comfortable and well-equipped. The master bedroom is gorgeous. The kids loved all the available board games and even discovered a couple of new favourites. We managed to get out on one long walk, guided by Triciaâs handy notes, and enjoyed the great views and wild countryside. Iâm already planning another weekend at Hillcrest in the spring/summer.
It's difficult to find anything to add to the long list of five-star reviews except to echo all that has already been said: Yes, the place is very clean, the view is spectacular, it's in a great location, the gardens are wonderful, and the host is gracious and welcoming. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
Thank you, Tricia
We had a lovely time staying in this beautiful cottage in a beautiful setting.
The cottage has everything you need to make your stay comfortable and it was very nice to receive a welcome pack. Thank you.
The cottage we stayed had spectacular, stunning views! It's almost more than your eyes can take it. Truly beautiful! And our host, Tricia, could not have been more accommodating! She made sure we had everything we needed, she drove us both ways to pick up and drop off our rental car. She had wonderful suggestions and a booklet of valuable information! She was nothing short of absolutely wonderful!! Thank you Tricia!!
Hillcrest Cottage was the perfect place to stay when exploring the Cotswolds. The view was stunning and it was conveniently located near areas we wanted to check out. The cottage itself was very well stocked with everything we could need during our stay and was clean and comfortable. Tricia and Rob were the most welcoming hosts Iâve come across in my time on VRBO. Everyone in my group agreed that we would come back any time!
We had a Wonderful time at Hillcrest cottage. We stayed without a car which made for some adventures, but it all worked out. We used Triciaâs supplies for Sunday supper as all the restaurants in walking distance close by 3 or 4. Thanks Tricia!!
Stayed in Patriciaâs cottage while visiting from Canada. It was an absolutely fabulous experience. The cottage was very clean with a beautiful welcome basket when we arrived. The pictures donât do the views justice. Tricia was so helpful with suggestions of places to visit and walks around the area. Wish we wouldâve spent longer just taking the walks around the cottage. Highly recommend if you wants to immerse in the English countryside and culture.
Superb views and great location for this comfortable cottage.
Tricia is a lovely host, very responsive and helpful.
Would highly recommend for a family of four.
A great place to stay to explore the beautiful Cotswolds.
Tricia was the perfect host and the extra touches she provides are special.
Our family throughly enjoyed our short stay. The cottage is very well equiped, warm and welcoming even on grey, wet days. Would recommend a stay at Hillcrest Cottage.
Idealic location and view from superior accommodations. Tricia most accommodating. Had a little bit of trouble finding the place, and tricky in and out of the road...otherwise superb and we would come back
