Relax on a Beautiful River in a Natural Florida Setting
Would you like to visit a place where you have the chance to observe otters, squirrels, alligators, deer, raccoons, woodpeckers, blue herons, hummingbirds, cormorants, fish, and many other species of Florida wildlife in their natural habitats? And, you can do this from the comfort and safety of an observation deck or dock over the river. If you prefer, you can just sit on the screened porch overlooking the beautiful St. Marks River and soak up the peaceful solitude of a completely unspoiled environment. As the sun goes down, you will be captivated by the rhythmic melodies of the frogs and crickets, guaranteed to soothe your soul.
Please note: for liability reasons, we do not provide boats of any kind You can rent them locally at TnT Hide-a-Way rentals on US98.
When you book a stay with us, we will send you a long list of places to visit and things to do such as Wakulla Springs and the St Marks National Wildlife Refuge. The Sceineyard
Most of the roads, ponds and levees in St. Marks NWR were originally built in the 1930âs by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), part of Rooseveltâs New Deal after the Great Depression. The ponds range from fresh water to salt, accommodating the many species of migratory birds passing through Floridaâs Big Bend. We take several hikes around ponds to observatories and along the levees, marveling at the variety of grasses and wildflowers. Butterflies are everywhere, including the migratory monarchs passing through the NWR on their way to Mexico for the winter.
Toward the end of the Civil War, the area of St. Marks was strategically important to the Confederate Army for delivery of supplies and to the Union Army trying to capture the capital, Tallahassee. The Union regiment, which came ashore here at the Lighthouse, was repulsed at Natural Bridge (where the St. Marks River goes underground), but not before destroying several bridges and the salt factory, essential for preserving food for the Confederate troops.
Our cabin is a mere 4 miles from the Lewiswood Farm, a popular wedding venue, Mention you are having or attending an event at the farm for a discount in our rate.
Note: The Seineyard in Woodville was sold and is now the Driftwood. Have eaten there many times since changing ownership and it has been excellent. The Seineyard is still open in Crawfordville if you wish to drive closer to the coast.
Before we approve your pet, we must know your pet's breed, age and size and if he/she will be on good behavior if you have to leave him/her alone in the Retreat? A pet fee of $75 will be charged upon approval. Our concern is that your pet is safe and so is our Retreat.

This is our second stay here and we know we will be back again. We so appreciate the beauty and natural setting of this place. In our two visits here, we have enjoyed seeing deer, owls (right outside our windows) and numerous Florida birds hanging out on the river. Our hosts Floyd and Carolyn were attentive and available to our needs. The Driftwood restaurant (new name) in Woodville has definitely become one of our favorite places to eat (awesome food) and we make sure we visit it every time we are blessed enough to come back to visit. Thank you Floyd and Carolyn for sharing your Retreat Joe and Debra Lutz, Florida
This place is amazing! We have fallen in love with the breathtaking and extremely relaxing environment. The jumping fish were hysterical! However, the cows walking in the river topped the fish. The house was perfect and had every thing we needed. Thank you so much for an amazing weekend. We will be back! Cory & Amber
Well, what can we say except the location was superb. The interior design is a testament to all your hard work and imagination. Spotlessly clean. So tranquil and relaxing sitting on the dock in the morning. The beds are some of the most comfortable we have had the pleasure to sleep in. The nighttime chorus (of the crickets and frogs) is something we will always remember. Great fun trying to catch the uncooperative mullet in the river, but we did catch one at the Seineyard restaurant in Crawfordville and it was mind blowing. So, Floyd and Carolyn, thank you very much for a wonderful Retreat. âHaste ye backâ Martin & Julia Edinburg, Scotland
What an awesome experience! Our accommodations were unsurpassable, and, to say the least, our trip was a success. Now that we found you it goes without saying youâll be stuck with us and our soon-to-be FSU student. Weâll be seeing you again. Elise & Larry Coral Springs, Florida
We really enjoyed our stay at the St. Marks Retreat. We paddled our canoes on the St. Marks, Sopchoppy, Wacissa and Aucilla rivers. All lovely. Tons of birds, otters, alligators and turtles. We also went hiking at Leon Sinks and biking on the St. Marks Trail. This cabin is delightful- quiet, peaceful and very clean. There are more rivers and trails to enjoy, so we will be back. Lois, John & Jocelyn Traverse City, Michigan
Floyd, it has been a pleasure meeting you and staying at the St. Marks Retreat. After working 11 years in the hotel industry, I have to say this is the cleanest and one of the best decorated properties I have ever seen. The nature and river next to the Retreat is good for mind, soul and body. The St. Marks Retreat is the Best! Robert and Family Jacksonville, Florida
This was our first sort of wilderness vacation, and the Retreat didnât let us down. Very serene and relaxing. Spotted a very large owl outside the cabin (approximately 2 œ feet tall)- very wild and scruffy looking. We saw many deer on the road coming in and more up close in the wildlife refuge. We also spotted a black bear in the Apalachicola National Forest. We enjoyed the good fresh seafood at the Seinyard Restaurant. The cabin was indeed clean, quaint and comfortable. The location and atmosphere proved to be the natural and relaxing stetting we desired. Ted & Cindy Cape Coral, Florida
What a wonderful vacation! This cabin is so cozy. Everything was clean and comfortable. We had a great honeymoon here. Thank you for the fruit, snacks, coffee and hot chocolate. That was a nice treat. We will be back. Take care and God bless you both. Dustin & Naomi
What a lovely place. Everything was very nice. Youâve taken the time to make this a truly neat visit. Our children enjoyed netting the fish and playing in the water. Saw lots of birds, spiders, fish, deer. I even got up extra early just to enjoy the peaceful setting. Enjoyed the surrounding area, Wakulla Springs (saw a manatee), the lighthouse, the town of St. Marks. Thanks again. We will recommend this place, and we will be back. Our son says this is our new Florida home. Al, Marcy, Ally & Natalie Harrison, MI
Thank you so much for this amazing experience. This was the best anniversary we have ever had. We saw all sorts of wildlife and relaxed more than weâve been able to in a long time. We really look forward to coming back. We canât thank you enough for everything. Jessica & Terry
Thanks for letting us stay here for our 25th anniversary. The house is just the right size for us, and the surroundings are fabulous. We love this area. We even caught and ate scallops. We saw an abundance of wildlife. Sincerely, Liz, Mike & Jessica
It was a perfect stay for our sonâs graduation from FSU law school. The property was very peaceful with just a calming presence. The history about the house and inside was awesome. It served the purpose and more. The added touch of the graduation flag was awesome. Very easy to get in touch with and respond quick. We truly enjoyed our stay!! Even got to see some deer heading back to the house.
We enjoyed every moment of our stay at this oasis! Greeted by a little gator, watched the fish jump and even saw two manatees swim by. We had a canoe delivered and picked up which is totally recommended so you can see more of the river . Our teen age kids had a blast fishing off the dock! Carolyn was very accommodating and responsive. Perfect spot for a family get a way.
5 Stars isn't enough stars!!! My 10 yr old summed it up when we first arrived" Meme this place is AWESOME, I wish we could live here" And he would be Right This Place is awesome We have traveled a lot but I have never had a host that I felt like I made a new friend.Thank you.Ms Carolyn for being a great host Your cabin was so unique with all the antique what nots. One thing got me when I opened bedroom closet the dolls scared the begeezes out of meYour place is top notchThank you
Beautiful location, secluded and the peaceful St Marks River running right off of the dock!Saw some deer, turkeys, bunch of bird species and even a baby aligator that hung with us the whole weekend. The house was clean and had everything we needed, AC was great and hot running water was perfect. Would definitely stay again
This is a wonderful place. From the setting in the woods on a clear river, to the cabin with every need already in place, to very gracious hosts, it is a destination that we will want to come back to again and again. Full amenities in the kitchen allowed us to eat in, in the evenings and breakfast in the mornings. Charmingly decorated as a country cabin should be. Close by interesting places to visit, our favorite is St. Mark's Wildlife Refuge. The birds singing in the mornings sipping coffee on the dock was, I believe, a solid dose of mental health therapy!
This is the second time we've stayed at the Retreat and we've thoroughly enjoyed both stays. The house is located in a very quiet area with beautiful views of the St Mark's river from the screened porch. The house was spotless when we arrived and had everything we needed to prepare meals and relax when not out on a daily adventure. The area offers endless opportunities for outdoor activities, our favorite being the St. Mark's Wildlife Reserve. Day trips to Apalachicola, Alligator Point, St George Island and Panacea are also worth it for the beautiful coastline drive. While the location is remote, a Publix is within about 20 minutes drive to stock up on necessities.Carolyn has been a great host and answered any questions we had very promptly. We're already missing the river (an otter swam by to say hello this morning) and can't wait to get back. We highly recommend checking this place out if you are exploring the area.
Our little family loved staying at the St Marks Retreat for Christmas. Carolyn was an awesome host and really easy to communicate with. She even had Christmas decor touches all throughout the cabin that made it really special for my daughter and niece. The cabin was absolutely adorable and really cozy. The beds were all comfy and the kitchen had all the utensils I needed to cook. The screened in porch and dock is where we spent most of our time because the view of the river is absolutely spectacular. We spent Christmas Eve morning on the dock with coffee and hot chocolate, watching otters play just across the water from us. We enjoyed fishing from the dock and caught a few blue gill. My niece and daughter loved seeing the large variety of birds and waterfowl (some were even wading in the water and fishing along side us). Also, having a kayak launch right on the property was such a bonus. We brought our kayaks and really enjoyed exploring the river. The river was clear, absolutely beautiful and so peaceful. Thereâs so many wonderful things about this place that if I keep going my review may turn into a book haha. We throughly enjoyed all aspects of our stay and plan to visit again soon when we have more time to explore the property and the area. Carolyn was an exceptional host and really made us feel at home. This place is such a beautiful hidden gem. I encourage you to book this place and spend the morning on the dock. You will love it.
Host was always available to answer any questions even on Thanksgiving Day! The retreat was very clean and supplied very well. Amazing views and so relaxing, sorry we had to get back to civilization and the real world. Will definitely be coming back.
Our host was very welcoming! We loved the location and really enjoyed our stay. I would highly recommend staying here . Beautiful little cabin/cottage on the river with the most amazing view. 10 out of 10 and will tell everyone how wonderful it is.
The cabin was quaint and homey. We enjoyed the serenity, the sound of the roosters in the distance, and the fish jumping in the river. We look forward to renting with Carolyn again in the future.
Home is clean and inviting, dated but is part of the charm. Outdoor by the water is not as pictured but nature has taken over. Location was perfect for my needs and my husband would like to return someday with our family together. If you want to unplug and reconnect with your loved ones absolutely perfect place.
Absolutely the most peaceful relaxing place on Earth. The cabin was a sanctuary for us visiting our college kid. Itâs 30 mins from FSU and gave us a place to visit. The patio provided cool breeze and beautiful sunsets, even a peaceful nap. The kitchen was well equipped to provide home cooked meals for our daughter and she even made some cookies. We will for sure be back!
Peaceful getaway. The host was the most accommodating wonderful host Iâve ever had in all our experiences. Beautiful location very quiet, lots of deer and wildlife at night.
This cabin is beautiful for those who love the sound of nature with quiet, peace and relaxation. The screened in porch with a river view was our favorite spot. We sat on the dock every day watching for wild life. We got to see a little gator who loves to sit on the downed tree off the dock area. This is country setting not far from restaurants or Wakulla Springs but still far enough away to escape the city life. The property had everything we needed. The beds were comfortable and the cabin is so quaint. We will definitely be back to do more exploring of the area. Carolyn was great at communicating with and was there if we had any questions. Thank you. A wonderful way to spend my husbands birthday!
We were super excited and happy with the house! Spent most of my time in the screened in porch. Watching the Manatee and gators.Had my extended family over for a meal and watch football game. It was super spacious for all to visit and eat comfortably.
The cabin is a perfect getaway for rest and connecting with nature. The kitchen is well stocked and the house is very comfortable. We enjoyed sitting on the porch and deck.
