Receptionist was great and helpful, but..... Place is very tired and need of some serious refit. I haven't seen separate hot and cold basin taps in hotels for years. Shower performance very poor. restaurant menu extremely limited- decided to go out. I guess it was very nice 20-30 years ago!

Room was a bit tired but clean. Big issue was no hot water and it appears from the number of people complaining at Reception, that this is a hotel wide issue. Reception staff told us that as its an old building the hot water comes on after running all hot taps in the bathroom for 15 mins. We tried this and the 'hot' water was still running freezing cold. This 'advice' was given to every guest we heard asking about the hot water, so the water wastage at this hotel must be an incredibly large amount. We also wondered if the catering staff had access to hot water to wash gheir hands. With this in mind we decided not to eat there and checked out before 8am to get home to eat and have a hot shower. It's a lovely building in a great location, so i really hope they get the water issue sorted.

The property was adequate for our purposes. I think they could have a simpler method for paying for car parking as you had to download an app and several customers had problems with this method and a member of staff had to sort it out on their own account for us. Breakfast was good.

The worst hotel experience I have ever had, I was in Southend for a family wedding checked in about 4 pm git to the room tv remote was barely working, went out for a late lunch, came back for a shower no hot water available, so due to time constrictions just got changed and went to the reception got back at 1am hotel locked took 20 minutes until the night porter arrived to let us in settled in for the night got up this morning again absolutely no hot water available for either a bath or shower packed went to check out talking to other guests in the way downstairs all found the same no hot water and absolutely no explanation got to reception no sign of any staff apart from a dining waitress who told us breakfast wouldn’t be available and she had no idea where the receptionist was myself and other guests just left our room keys on reception desk and left absolutely disgusted never again.

A Nightmare

A disaster. Had booked for 2 nights. But moved to another hotel for the second night. The Muthu hotel should not have been open. They knew they had a plumbing problem,which meant there was no hot water. The room was old and needed renovation. The double bed had a thin sprung mattress that must have been so old that the springs moved in all directions. The so called clothes closet, which also acted as a storage cupboard only had three coat hangers for a family room. The upstairs corridors and stairs had obviously not been vacuumed the day we were there. The reception area and downstairs lounge were very clean and bright. They had obviously been renovated, but the upstairs Disasterous.

My experience at this hotel was unfortunately disappointing, especially given that I had booked a suite three months in advance. Upon checking in at 8:45pm, I was given a room that was clearly not the suite I had paid for. When I went back down to query it, I was told that due to a wedding, they had prioritised giving the suite to someone else. No prior warning, no communication — just an apology and a downgrade to an “executive room”, which was a lower standard. While the hotel staff said they would refund the difference, what was most frustrating is that had I known in advance, I could have booked a suite elsewhere. The room itself was spacious and had sea view windows, but they were so dirty that it completely ruined the view. The bathroom was far from ‘executive’ — the shower unit was tiny, though there was a jet bath (a nice touch), but the overall décor was dated and worn. Also, do not pay extra for breakfast — it was really poor. Coffee came from an urn and was almost undrinkable, and the rest of the food was very basic and budget-quality. Eat elsewhere if you can. However, I must say Expedia were amazing — they listened to my complaint and offered a small but reasonable credit refund, which was excellent service and very much appreciated. Overall, this was a hotel experience I’d rather forget. If you do stay here, keep your expectations low — or you’re likely to be disappointed.
