In spite of some very lovely staff, this hotel is in an appalling state and desperately need of a facelift. Water damage on the walls, peeling paint, leaking toilets, a broken shower and windows that havenât been cleaned in years. The owners need to spend a lot of money on this establishment that must have been spectacular in the past, as neither it or the staff deserve it being left in this state.
not suitable for public use until all the renovati
I am currently working at Whitby
During my previous first visit, I noticed the hotel was undergoing major decorating and refurbishment which I understood and appreciated. However, during my most recent stay, I was extremely disappointed with the room I was allocated. It was well below the standard expected from a hotel, and the only clean facility was the newly renovated bathroom. Overall, the experience did not meet my expectations, especially given the improvements that seemed to be underway.
I am believed the accommodation was not up to a standard and I would like to have my money back
There was a lot of building work going on so could not give it more than 2 stars for condition . We was told about the lift not working and as we was on the 3rd floor it was a bit tiring. The room however was very nice and clean .
had a lovely weekend the hotel was clean and tidy even though its going through renovation nothing was too much for the staff really looking forward to another stau
Lovely weekend in Whitby at the Royal Hotel. Excellent location overlooking the sea front and we had upgraded our room which offered the most amazing sea views and had recently been refurbished. However, i was disappointed to find out when we arrived that the whole hotel was under going refurbishment work which i wasnt informed of at the time of booking. It didnt really affect our stay but obviously the hotel isnt looking at its best astetically at the moment. We also had a couple of issues with our room which i was disappointed with given how much we paid for the room. I mentioned that the room had been refurbished recently and the bathroom was bramd new and beautiful. However, on both mornings of our stay there was a foul smell of drains in the bathroom which suggested an issue with the plumbing. We also had an issue with the electrics on the motning of our second day where we found none of the sockets to be working. Turns out the coffee machine had blown the fuse. Lastly, there was quite a draft blowing theough the large windows in the room but i appreciate that the building is listed and maybe this is why they are not double glazed. One thing we did enjoy was the food at breakfast however, even though we pre booked a table, there was no cutlery or mugs set out and we were told to just take them from other tables in the restaurant. No coffee / tea machine either so there was often a queue waiting for coffee as the percolator needed replensishing regularly.
The room and service good plus a great breakfast but the downside is the amount of work going on especially the noise and the dust. wasn't informed about all of the work otherwise I wouldn't of booked here although I was informed about no lifts
At first put us in a horrible room dirty ask them if could swop and wow the room what they put us in was amazing
Really freindly staff ..car parking is a bit off a nightmare
Haveing lots work done at moment so no lifts and a bit dusty
Bathroom was virtually spotless. Hotel being renovated so the room probably used ony a few times prior to us. Ignore the workmen, and you will have a wonderful stay in this location, overlooking the Abbey. Few minutes from the centre but up hill. Will go back when renovation is complete, and lift working, and full air conditioning in place.
Nice old style friendly hotel in a great location and full of character. The hotel was undergoing refurbishment while we were there but it had no impact on our stay. Very pleasant room. Breakfast was good but lacked fried eggs. Parking via another company but no issues. Easy check in and out. We will stay there again.
On arrival at this hotel we were met by a huge building project within the reception area with drills, sanders, many building personnel carrying various pieces of their equipment. I was not made aware of this at the time of booking.
I managed to voice my shock to the manager who assured me that the bedrooms/restaurant would not be affected by the drilling noise/dust/and general mayhem. We were offered a choice of rooms and because we had looked forward to this trip the thought of returning home without checking in and going through the process of unpacking, we decided to stay.
We made the best of this two night stay but under no circumstances whatsoever would we be making a return booking. I felt grieved that his extensive building work and the accompanying noise and chaos was not mentioned at the point of check in. The lifts were not working and my heart went out to the many elderly disabled guests who
struggles up the many stairs using zimmer frames etc.
This hotel should have closed its doors until the refurbishment was complete because by allowing guests to book and not mentioned the chaos they will have lost the opportunity of returning guests.
I want to add that despite the above shambles, all of the staff showed respect and professionalism throughout our stay. They were working in a very stressful environment yet managed to remain polite until we checked out.
It is a building site so what can you expect - but I was not informed before I booked that this was the case. Luckily I am fit enough to climb 70 plus steps to my 3rd level room as there is no lift etc etc
There were renovations taking place. This restricted certain amenities and should have been made clear in the hotel booking information and reflected within the pricing.
Nice old hotel. Will be good when the renovations, including a new lift, are complete.
Sorry we arrived late and had to leave early as we missed the sights.
Do recommend - the staff were lovely.
Lovely old hotel currently being renovated. The new lift will be wonderful as there are a lot of stairs. Great location. Marvellous staff. Very comfortable rooms with upgraded bathrooms.
Recommend for a visit.
