Peaceful Mountain Cottage, Deck with Gazebo
"The Fox Den": Imagine a whole house for two people, with a yard, a large deck with gazebo that feels like a treehouse above a mountain stream, instead of a motel room. Wow! Great for a couple, 2 friends, or parent-child catch-up. Enjoy the , wood interior, fast wi-fi, kitchen, full bath, outdoor shower, 2 bedrooms, 2 swings, fire pit, and Japanese garden. Nestled in a valley with great hiking, downhill from Deep Gap on the beautiful Black Mountain Ridge Crest Trail.
Update: Nature has healed us after Hurricane Helene hit our area September 28, 2024. Roads are just fine again. We are high above the creek. A regular car can get to the Fox Den, no problem as roads are paved right to the parking spaces. We worked hard, and Fox Den is now better than ever! Reopened in April 2025 and Wow! nature is popping out all over!
This is a real getaway space, great for relaxing and being with the ones you love. Burnsville restaurants and stores are 11 miles away. Nearby are crafts, live music, gifts and groceries, hiking trails and rivers. 45 miles from Asheville with its tourist attractions when you want a city. Lounge and dine on the deck in the gazebo, enjoy the fun bedrooms, and listen to the mountain stream down below. Privacy and nature are the plan. Take a deep breath. Restore. Refresh. Relax.

Other things to note:
This is a fun, cozy mountain cottage. The interior is all wood floors and walls, a living/dining room, with three additional dining areas outside. The well water here is different from city water. It is rich in minerals and has a high iron content. It is clean and safe, but most people prefer bottled drinking water. We provide a jug of drinking water. Welcome to the mountains!

Amazing hospitality and great place for a mountain get-away! -Samuel April 2019
Ron was very courteous and responsive. Cabin would be a great base for hiking in the Mt Mitchell area. -James April 2019
Very sweet spot! We were there in the winter and stayed very warm! Gorgeous location, just a short drive away from a nearby town with coffee shops, groceries, fly fishing shops, etc.
Iâd definitely return! - Kate
Our stay was absolutely wonderful. Such a beautiful place in the mountains. My family and I enjoyed every second at the Fox den. We had campfires and told spooky stories and went hiking to several waterfalls. We drove into Asheville which is only an hour away and had a fun time looking through all the shops. We will definitely be back! -Sarah October 2018
It would be cramped for more than 2 people but the beds were very comfortable. The heat worked very well. Parking was a bit cramped and the steps (because of a lot of leaves and sticks)to the front door were a little precarious if your arenât real careful. Perhaps the people that cleaned so well before we arrived could take them of if itâs been awhile since itâs been done. We loved it there though!
5 stars is not enough to rate our stay at the Fox Den and our gracious host Ron. Itâs pretty safe to say we felt at home immediately upon parking our car and heading inside. The Fox Den exceeded our expectations and checked every box and then some that my sweetheart and I were looking for to celebrate our anniversary. It was cozy, extremely private, and had an overall âIâm homeâ feel to it. The property itself also provided a fire pit that we used several times and incredible scenery. As a host Ron was eager to provide anything and everything we needed and even made us feel safe and not rushed to leave in the middle of an unforeseen snow storm as our stay was ending. Another stay at the Fox Den in the near future is an absolute certainty for us. Thanks Ron!
My wife were looking to spend a month in a mountain cabin and Fox Den was exactly what we wanted. The cabin is old but has a lot of character. We loved sitting on the back deck surrounded by trees, listening to the nearby stream. There are many remarkable places to explore within a reasonable drive of Fox Den and lots of opportunities for entertainment and dining. Local people we met were very friendly. Ron provided information on things to see and do in the area, and he was very responsive to our needs and questions.
My partner and I had a wonderful time staying at the Fox Den to celebrate our anniversary. The location is conveniently 20 minutes from the nearest town, but just far enough away that it feels very remote. As of July 2025, many of the main parks in the area are still recovering from Hurricane Helene damage, but that didn't stop us from finding open places to explore, as the Fox Den is nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The home is already equipped with basic necessities such as paper towels, trash bags, and toilet paper, so you do not need to go out of your way to buy those things at the store before your visit. Towels and linens are also provided, which saved some room for us when packing! Overall, great visit and Ron was extremely accommodating and available throughout our stay. If you're ever in the area, the Fox Den is a great place to stay.
This house is perched right above a flowing creek that will put you in a relaxed state of meditation!!! The house itself is very rustic but has all the basic amenities! Ron was available whenever I had a question and was easy to communicate with! I thoroughly enjoyed my stay here and would definitely stay again
This cottage is wonderful, cozy and just what I wanted, even a swing outside. It was such a calm space, tucked away in the woods. I LOVED IT! Best VRBO yet. And the owner was incredibly helpful. I hope to book it again!
We enjoyed our stay at the Fox den. It was very pleasant, quiet and neat! It is not on the main stream of things to do, but if you are looking for some R & R, and that was what we were looking for, some rest and relaxation, then this is the place to be!
I really enjoyed this cabin....it was very peaceful and included everything we needed to be able to enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Mornings on the deck with coffee, and the outdoor showers were both highlights! Ron is a very accommodating and friendly host. This is a quiet, warm and comfortable get-a-way, I hope to return in the near future.
We had a very relaxing time in this great property. The area is very quiet and the babbling creek behind the home made for some very relaxing ambiance. The host was very welcoming and responsive. I would stay at this property again.
My girlfriend and I enjoyed our stay here. The cabin is cozy with plenty of fox themed decorations and a deck that's great for taking in some fresh air.
The cabin is in a nice, quiet location. The creek running behind it provides background noise great for falling asleep or just relaxing.
Overall, this is a nice cabin to stay in.
I am from the south and feel absolutely drawn to the mountains. This delightful cottage sits nestled right on a mountain road with a babbling brook just outside of your window...Everything you need to be comfortable and close to nature...
Even a road below the cabin for a nice hike...
I needed a get away and found it here...
Ron was an insightful host and very accomodating.
Would love to stay again! Namaste~ mary
