Our multi generation family and dog enjoyed this property for a fall getaway. We didnât need to contact host for anything. A nice attention to detail was the bag of local coffee shop coffee supplied.
This place was magical. Lovely cottage with nice decor and great outdoor space. The beach is right there and we got it to ourselves most of the day. Would come back for sure!
Our extended family of 11 (including kids, grandkids, and parents) stayed here for a week at the end of August for our annual rock hunting / beach relaxing vacation. We could not have asked for a better vacation. Easy to understand check in instructions, great location, and the beach was awesome. There was plenty of room for our 11 people and a roomy back deck with propane fire pit for nightly relaxing session. The house was in great condition and it had everything we needed already there including air fryer, toaster, microwave, etc..I talked with Philip the manager/owner a couple of times and he couldn't have been nicer. The beach had great access for our older guests, and the kids enjoyed the miles of beach in each direction to look for those rock treasures. The kids also enjoyed boogie boarding, swimming, and snorkeling. We took advantage of the free kayaks and paddleboards that were offered. I'm off now to re-book this house for next year. If you are on the fence about renting, book now, you won't regret it.
Well, before our stay started the owner had contacted me asking me to cancel my reservation on VRBO and book directly through him. He stated it would save me money, I did find this odd but didnt think much of it.
We first pulled up to the house thinking it looks great, it had an amazing location. The house is older so it had the charm of an older home. It could have been cleaner, that wasnât a big issue for us. We did quickly realize that there were little things not working.
We contacted the property owner/ manager about two unworking tvâs and a lack of pilot light on a gas fireplace, asking for help. It was a wet rainy day and we had already passed time by playing cards. He suggested we wait till tomorrow, I had asked for him to help me troubleshoot the problem and he starts calling me a Katen, ignorant and entitled. He attempts to tell me I must vacate immediately and he is going to call the sheriff.
I had to spend 1.5 hours on the phone with VRBO to get this resolved. He is a problem host, and ge had no right to threaten us since we did not break the contract. After we proved HE had broken the contract by not providing a safe environment for us to stay in VRBO provided us with a full refund and released us from our reservation.
I know owner is going to reply to this comment with hostility just like he has all the other reviews he did not like.
You may not have any issues... but if you do... you do not want to deal with this man.
The location of this rental could not be much better. Views from the house and deck were spectacular and walking along the shore each day was a treat. Two areas to review: We definitely could have used more dinner plates as there there only 7 and some nights we needed plates for serving as well at dinner. Upstairs bedroom door would not stay closed, had to wedge a washcloth in the door jam to keep it closed.
Would I stay there again? Yes. The location was great and having the beach right there was perfect. The price per night was right for two families splitting the bill. Here are some concerns we had.
1. Limited dinnerware and utensils. Bring extra plates for family bigger than 4.
2. The master bedroom on the first floor had spackle all over the walls that were not shown in the photos. It's not too big of a deal, but it appears that the finishing work was halted. The window in this room was not able to close once opened. So we had to go outside to shut it at night.
3. The instruction book stated that we had to remove all bedding and place it into bags. We did not feel that this was our job, but we did. However, we were not able to find enough bags for the amount of laundry that was there.
4. We ere not able to adjust the heat up. The crazy winds for two days had the screen door coverings moving with leaking air, Even with the fireplace going it was cold in the morning at 66 degrees with the drafts inside.
Overall, for the location and price for two families, not a bad place, and would consider staying again. It was "clean" but could use a thorough deep cleaning.
Our group of 10 enjoyed the private beach and proximity to activities in the Keweenaw peninsula. The house was tight for 10, and wasn't really setup for more than 6. It would be good to have place settings and seating to accommodate everyone in the group. The house could use some TLC - a thorough cleaning, repairs to doors and windows, paint, and furniture. It was not clear that the outdoor space is shared with several other rentals - though the other guests were great, and it wasn't a problem. A toilet in an unfinished stone basement with steep stairs and no handrail is generally not considered a "bathroom," this is a two bath house. The owner promptly provided missing bedding and towels. The sunsets on the beach were amazing.
North Shore Cottages are located on a private beach on Lake Superior. Beautiful sunsets, rises and if your lucky,
northern lights. Cottage and grounds filled with family fun house games yard games, boating, kayaking, with lots to do close by. Rock hunting, waterfalls, hiking, museums, shopping. Fun for whole family all week. Our second time there can't wait to go back again.
What an amazing location on the shores of Lake Superior. We loved our spot on the shoreline and were happy to find Yooperlites each evening. The firepit on the deck provided two nights of pure Michigan fun! My parents, grandmother, sister, nephew, and kids enjoyed the perfect weekend in this ideal home. We all traveled North to celebrate my oldest son's graduation from Michigan Tech. The house was clean and with 5 bedrooms, had all the space we needed. We ate breakfast each morning enjoying the sound of Lake Superior waves. We found great lunch options in Calumet and enjoyed takeout pizza from Calumet Works, a delicious dinner at Michigan House Cafe & Brewpub, and a graduation celebration dinner at Carmelitas, complete with thimbleberry margaritas. Delicious UP coffee was provided along with many other fun delights. The MTU colored and themed flowers on the table were the very best surprise! The owners are caring and the sweet message they left for us was heartfelt. Everything they did and provided only added to our celebration. We truly do hope to venture back often and with our second son starting at MTU in the fall, I'm certain we'll be back!
The entire family from our 1 year old granddaughter all the way to my 72 year old husband loved the cottage and location. Quiet, beautiful view of Lake Superior and fantastic rock hunting. Close enough for short day trips to Copper Harbor to Houghton. Would love the owners to include some history on the McNaughton Cottage. Great time. Would highly recommend.
