This place is centrally located in the Sasssi. Staying in the cave was magical. Exceptional cleanliness! Amazing breakfast - made cappuccinos to order for us. Owners were so accommodating and set up parking for us and a shuttle. She also made dinner reservations for us! This was the best part of our trip to Italy! Stay here - you will not regret it!

We loved our spa cave room at Thymus. It had a pool and a Turkish steam bath. The room accommodated four easily and was very clean and well appointed. The staff was wonderful and the breakfast was excellent. We would stay again and highly recommend to anyone. Matera is a unique place and this is a one of a kind, top tier property.

The hotel itself was great, location terrific, and the type of hotel room being in a cave mostly was remarkable. Matera itself is an interesting town with much history, not just Rome, Byzantium and Arab slavers but of the surprising nature of its topography and how the residents made it work. All this was great to see and Thymus itself did very well in showcasing it. What was annoying was the fact that only 3 days before we were due to arrive, Thymus sent me a message saying that no cars were possible in the city, and that I was left with either trying my best somewhere in town or outside, or utilize their covered parking option at 25 euros per day. No option really, but that was not the issue for me. The city itself makes cars impossible. I understand that having seen it. What annoys me is the fact that the hotel never mentioned this on the booking site. Had they stated that parking was impossible but they had a work around, I would likely have been happy with this. Or alternatively I would have dismissed this hotel and maybe even the town and traveled somewhere else. However I was not given the chance to make this choice. It was concealed. There are plenty of hotels in the city, both old town and new town. Plenty of parking options in the new town. None in the old town. Armed with this information from the hotel I may have decided to go somewhere else. Long rant I know, but this leaves a really bad taste in the mouth. Hence the rating.

Bravo to Bora who was more than helpful. Your restaurant picks were excellent as well! The property was immaculate, can’t imagine there is a nicer place to stay. Breakfast had lots of choices. The spa tub was great after a long very hot day.

Thymus Residence is a unique and charming hotel. The hostess met us with a warm welcome and the hotel was exactly as we imagined - a charming, high end, cave experience. In the heart of the Sassi and close walking distance to one-of-a-kind sites. The rooms were very nice, the food delicious. I would definitely stay again!!

Thymus Residence is just such a different place to stay with breakfast taken just next door to our accommodation in a former medieval church. So many interesting features in the immediate area. We chose a cava suite at Thymus for 3 nights. Simply had to have one of the former cave rooms if you’re going to Matera! Such a different experience to staying in a regular room. But while still visibly a cave architecturally, it had every convenience to a high standard. Absolutely amazing.
