Disappointing Holiday Inn Express
I always felt that this chain of hotels was consistently good but this particular one in Bay City disappointed. On the positive side, the staff were helpful and polite and our room was clean. We only stayed for one night en route to Mackinac Island but our room was tired and the furniture, carpet etc. depressingly dark. The breakfast buffet was appalling. I didn't even bother trying the hot food it looked so unappetising, and the fruit selection consisted of a huge pile of brown bananas which would have gone in the bin at home. I felt we were overcharged for the quality of the hotel. Also, when you put a "do not disturb, I am sleeping sign" on the door, I don't expect to have housekeeping knocking at 9 a.m. Even thought we were already up and breakfasted and just packing to leave, she did not know that.

The smoke detector woke us up at 2 in the morning had to get front desk to take out batteries then they just left it hanging

Everything was so clean, and the pool was super nice and warm. The front desk attendant when we arrived went above and beyond. We had lots of kids for an event. She knew there would be construction issues getting there and had made 2 pages of instructions and maps for everyone attending, and she worked hard to seek everyone out to make sure no one encountered complications. She was helpful with every extra request we had while preparing for our event. This has hands down been the best hospitality experience I have ever had in a hotel, even amongst hotels with a higher star rating. When we return to Bay City we won't even have to think of another hotel. We can just return here.
