The residence, part of a 16th century building built around the former church of San Giovanni, overlooks the splendid three-tiered fountain of Italian Unity and borders on the panoramic viewpoint, "Natural window" that opens onto the wonderful Tuscan hills. Stone walls, niches and terracotta floors, this apartment is warm and welcoming in winter of the medieval village of Castiglione d'Orcia, making it an ideal base for discovering the wonders of the Artistic, Natural and Cultural Park of the Val d'Orcia, World Heritage Site of UNESCO.
Val d'Orcia is a treasure chest of nature and landscapes, with some of the most interesting historical centers in Tuscany. From the streets, squares, churches, the gaze spans the great horizons of multicolored hills, introducing us to Crete Senesi and along the Via Francigena. Castles, boroughs, towers and complete isolated monasteries.

CASTIGLIONE D'ORCIA
There has been news from the country since 714, at the time the possession of the Aldobrandeschi known as Petra. Castiglione d'Orcia saw an important development in the Longobard and Franca times for its strategic position on the Francigena Street. In 1252 it became Free Commune, but it gave it to the powerful family of Piccolomini before and Salimbeni then, who used Castiglione d'Orcia as one of the bases for their Directed precisely against the Siena. Subsequently Castiglione passed into the hands of the Florentines, who in 1605 entered the noble Bolognese of the Riario family.
On Castiglione d'Orcia stands the Fortress of Tentennano, an imposing trellis placed on the top of a hill dominating the Orcia valley. Built in 1100-1200, it has long been the small capital of the Val d'Orcia and strategic control center on the Via Francigena, the famous medieval road that connects Rome with northern Italy and France , Pilgrim, ambassador, noble, cleric, armed or disarmed, passed through the Val d'Orcia, under the watchful eye of the Lords of the Rock, high and unbreakable.
From its summit, it offers an unforgettable panorama, ranging from Mount Amiata to the Val d'Orcia, with the soft hills dotted with farmhouses, closed by the wooded hills, the old Vignoni tower overlooking Bagno Vignoni and hiding San Quirico d'Orcia, The Rocks of the Pienza roofs, and farther Monticchiello and Montalcino, the mountains above Cetona, and finally the lonely and solitary tower of Radicofani, another privileged observation point on the valley.
In the center of Castiglione d'Orcia another fortress, the Aldobrandesca fortress: the ancient fortress with the ruins of the ancient walls.
Piazza Vecchietta, dedicated to the 15th-century Siena painters Lorenzo di Pietro, called The Vecchietta, the tradition of which originates from Castiglione d'Orcia. The square is located in the heart of the city center. Other interesting monuments are the Romanesque church of Santa Maria Maddalena and the church of Saints Stephen and Degna, a Romanesque church with a sixteenth-century façade; The dairy includes some important works of art, including Madonna with Child by Simone Martini and another Madonna with Child by Pietro Lorenzetti.
A few steps from the square, there is the San Giovanni art room, a former church of the homonymous Confraternity, which preserves the paintings performed for Castiglione and Rocca d'Orcia by some of the major exponents of the Sienese school of the 14th and 15th centuries: Pietro Lorenzetti, Simone Martini, Vecchietta and Giovanni di Paolo.
Remembrance Park, built in memory of the fallen of the Great War; The park is rich in native botanical varieties of rare species of rare orchids that bloom in the period between April and June.
Around the limestone spur on which stands the Tentennano fortress, there is a medieval fortress of Rocca d'Orcia: within the walls there are three tiny "terzieri": the Rocca (around the square), Rocchetta (West) and Rocchettina (east) ; Some stretches of the walls are still standing.
Today the Rock is a quiet village, many places of interest includes the Church of Our Lady of Grace, Manno's Old Fortress Hospital and Cistern Square.

Our Quiet Tuscan Getaway
Castiglione d'Orcia was lovely. Right in the town square you become immersed with those who live there. The little grocery store which has it all is right next door and you can grab a cornetto and caffe at any time.. We were lucky enough to see a concert from our balcony. Our host was wonderful and so helpful!

On the town square in Castiglione d'Orcia
This two story home is directly in the middle of this medieval town. The seating for the locals bar is in the square in front of the door, the small but outstanding grocery store is literally next door. The citizenry do spend the evenings at the bar until 10 pm, but closing the windows captures the noise. This home has a fully equipped kitchen but no oven. The main bathroom is huge by Italy standards and the bedrooms are comfortable. And there is a terrace overlooking the square where you can sit and eat or drink or hang out your laundry like you live here. We have been coming to Val d' Orcia for 20 years and this is where we will stay when we come again. The only drawback is it is up a winding road that we do not recommend after a dinner out with a bottle of wine. The road requires 100 percent attention.

Excellent place to stay
We loved being in the heart of Val D’Orcia with easy access (via car) to all the surrounding towns. There is a grocery store right next door to the property and several places to eat and have coffee or wine! The Enoteca right across the piazza is excellent. The service and responsiveness by the owner and caretaker was fantastic. AND when you are bone tired at the end of the day, you can look forward to a shower with hot water and great water pressure!! Thank you Fulvio and Laura for your hospitality!!

3 weeks in Tuscany
The house was delightful. Its location is one of the best features, in the main square in a medieval village. Right next door is a market with all the food essentials. A gelato shop opened in mid-June in the village. A minor inconvenience was the electrical adapters. The Italian plugs.take a 3-in-line plug, and we had no adapters for this configuration. There were a few in the house. There are several excellent restaurants in the village. We had another couple join us for a week and there was plenty of room. All in all, it was a great house in a great location. A place from which to take day trips to places in south Tuscany.

THIS HOUSE IS WONDERFUL
If you have always wanted to stay in a typical Tuscan home, this is the one. I have been to Tuscany several times and always stayed in an agriturismo. This home was a very pleasant surprise for my 2 companions and I. The owner is very responsive to all inquiries and very helpful. The house is clean convenient and well equipped. . Parking and shopping for groceries convenient, though the staples are well provided for by the owner. The town is a delight and now one of my favorites in Tuscany.

Tolle Toskana-Tage
