Big; unique; no air conditioning - my fault for not reading description thoroughly

Posted Apr. 12, 2024 on HomeAway
Pros and cons to this stay. Pros are it's big, the location is great; I did like the shower a lot! Cons are there is no AC. Yes, I realize many places on Maui do not have AC. The descritions reads "open air" and it just didn't register with me at the time of booking. So if you are a person that is remotely hot natured, don't book this in May. Maybe January is a better month. We spent the first night to see if we could handle it and decided to move to a closeby resort the next morning. No, I didn't contact the manager about this as I know it was my fault. The freezer needs some attention. The freezer door doesn't slide easily out to get ice. There is some organization in the kitchen that needs addressing. Should the manager wish to contact me privately, I'll share the points of interest. I wish this place well, it just wasn't for us.

COCKROACHES everywhere!

Posted Apr. 10, 2024 on HomeAway
From the moment we arrived, we observed cockroaches (dead and alive). Over the next 48 hours, we killed at least two dozen cockroaches! They were seen crawling on the floor, in the shower, on the walls over the headboards, in our toiletry bag and one swimming in my cup of coffee. How it managed to find its way there I still don’t know. I’m on the border of dry heaving as I think about how I almost drank it. Our kids were terrified to walk around as cockroaches would scurry across the floor. The issue was brought up to the property manager, Emmett, who quickly dispatched someone to spray bug spray. This exacerbated the issue, as now we found more and more bugs coming out of the woodwork and slowly succumbing to death out on the open floor resulting in us cleaning up half dead cockroach carcasses. As we continued to look around for bugs, we discovered how truly disgustingly unkept this location is. Behind every dresser was a layer of dirt and dead bugs, the fans were covered with at least a few years worth of dust and the ceiling beams had what we believe was lizard feces dripping off the edges. I have pictures to prove all this. Had we looked into Lowest guest rating, we would have found this is an ongoing issue over the past 10 yrs! Owner tried to discredit a reviewer, saying the bugs were only house flys. We were willing to eat the cost of relocating but were unsuccessful in finding availability on short notice. This a “no refund” location.I would not recommend this cottage!

Landscape pristine and close to pool

The kids loved being so close to the pool, and we all enjoyed the beauty inside and outside the cottage. There was plenty of space, and amenities for what we were looking for. Mahalo!

Dolphin Cottage in Kaanapali

Great property for 4 adults in 2 separate bedrooms. If you have kids there’s room in LR and lanai. Central kitchen LR DR. Enclosed lanai is spacious. 2 bath w/separate sinks and toilets (note toilet in guest BR is ‘old school’ and temperamental!). Giant shared shower between bathrooms, and master has giant tub. Across from pool and easy walk to beach across highway. Short drive to Whalers Village.Old Lahaina Town is closed of course-terribly sad to see the devastation 😢 shop local to support the locals! Lahaina Strong!

Nice house, great location

Posted Feb. 15, 2024 on HomeAway
We attended a conference with our two kids and planned on having my parents come with us. Unfortunately my parents had to cancel at the last minute. Fortunately they cancelled because this would have been an awkward house to stay in with four adults and two children. With my wife and two small kids it worked out wonderfully. It is a house with a very unusual design/layout that isn't great for more than two close couples or a small family though. The pool is right out the door and the beach is nice and extremely close to walk to as well. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

First visit to Maui

Posted Feb. 7, 2024 on HomeAway
This is a unique property--as advertised. An open air plantation style home on a beautifully manicured grounds just up to road from the beach. Positives: Plenty of space, quiet, well maintained grounds, pool. There were just a few things that--in our opinion--could be easily addressed to really make this into a show stopper. In basically a screened in porch, it is of course hard to keep all insects out, but there were places that clearly had not been swept or vacuumed. While the throwback in time works for some things, the original kitchen appliances are not one--we were resigned to use the microwave. And when it rained one day--what I take to be a pretty typical Maui rain--the skylights above the kitchen and main bath leaked pretty significantly (such that we had to use a bucket and several bath towels to mop it up). We enjoyed our vacation. We enjoyed the property. We found the site manager--Emmett--responsive and easy to work with. A little investment, thoughtful updates, and more conscientious cleaning could fairly easily this a 4- or 5-star destination.

Nice, but needs repairs, updates and a deep cleaning.

Posted Jan. 25, 2024 on HomeAway
We had a fun time in Maui and at the house, but there were a few issues with the house itself. During two days of being in a tropical storm, we had to deal with major leaking and water pouring through 5 out of 6 of the skylights. We understand it’s the topics but there was still a good amount of bugs (alive and dead) in the place. A deep clean is needed, especially under beds and furniture, kitchen and bathroom drawers and cupboards and feathers from the sofa pillows. Also a bit awkward to walk through the bedrooms to get to the bathrooms. The grounds were well kept and the pool was always clean. We had a great time in spite of some of the house issues. A good place to stay if some of the above issues can be resolved.

Rustic Cabin

Posted Dec. 31, 2023 on HomeAway
The property is rustically charming but has some maintenance issues. We had trouble flushing the toilet in the second bedroom; the disposal in the kitchen sink didn’t work; one of the cabinet hinges came loose. Figuring the lighting was almost impossible. To use either bathroom you need to walk through a bedroom - not ideal. It’s a good rental for 4, six is a stretch

Authentic Hawaiian Vibe!

This bungalow was even better than the pictures and description! Beautiful art and traditional hawaiian decor and design, lovely lanai, peekaboo views of the ocean, an amazing walk-in shower, spacious open flow kitchen, dining area, and living area, and swimming pool right out the front door. 10 minute walk to the glorious beaches! We will definitely return! Mahalo
