American House 1854- Steamboat Landing, 4 Bedrooms, 1.5 Bath, Full Kitchen
The whole group will be comfortable in this spacious and unique boutique hotel. The American House, built in 1854 is the oldest building in the city of McGregor! Dr. Lucy Hobbs the first woman to graduate dental college in the world had her dental office in this building from 1862-1865! The building is on the National Registry of Historic Places and offers a one of a kind experience you canât find anywhere else! Just a âstonesâ throw from the river you will enjoy the best view of the Mississippi in all of McGregor. Many famous people have frequented the American House including former President Jimmy Carter and the legendary Mark Twain back when he was doing a speech in the area. Please note: This is a train town and we are located in close proximity to the tracks. Train noise should be expected. They are amazing to watch go by and we provide complimentary earplugs for your convenience.
Four of us were in the PdC area for some quiet-road bike riding. Some of the small compromises needed to enjoy an historic lodging such as this were a bit lost on us, so the value equation was a bit off. The separate bedrooms were nice. Communication was excellent, and a small noise issue (from roof repair) was temporary. Train noise at night might bother others, but wasn't an issue for us.
Our group of friends had a lovely weekend in McGregor! The lodging was comfortable and spacious. The beds were cozy, and those Bare blankets! The ice machine was an appreciated bonus. Thank you to our host for recommending places for food and drink - we loved the places we visited. The locals were inviting. The view was great, and it was fun to stay at a historic site!
