Great location - 5 min walk to train - 7 min walk to Duomo - beautiful square. Upscale hotel with all the amenities and glitz. Room, bed, bath all opulent, breakfast buffet was wonderful. Staff extremely helpful and friendly.

Coveniently located, this hotel is very typical of italian hotels in grandiose historical cities - well below the standards of comparable US hotels, horrendously overprices, but staff trying to do what they can to minor the incoveniences of staying in.... well.... an old palace with need for a lot of maintenance and immense upgrades. The particular issue with this hotel is its labytinthical layout - i got consistently lost in the corridors desperately trying to find the room, upstairs, downstairs, up the elevators down other elevators... a true nightmare that only ended when at the brink of despair, the staff changed the room. Rooms are all old, dated and in need of upgrade but not sure there is much they can do, it would need to close for many months to do a multi million $$ renovation

I recently revisited this property after nearly 20 years, hoping to relive the wonderful experience I had back in 2005. That earlier stay left such a positive impression that I looked forward to returning with my family, including my two teenage sons. Unfortunately, what we encountered this time was far from what I remembered, and the overall experience was deeply disappointing. We had booked two rooms, expecting a comfortable and welcoming stay. Instead, we were met with a host of issues that should not be acceptable at any reputable property. Both rooms had a strong, unpleasant odor that made it difficult to relax. It was immediately clear that proper housekeeping and maintenance standards were not being followed. The bathrooms were not clean, and shockingly, neither room had basic toiletries—not even soap in the showers. The situation only got worse when we went for breakfast. The offerings were extremely limited and of poor quality, and there was a complete lack of hospitality from the staff. No one was available to answer questions or assist guests. Even asking for a cup of coffee seemed too much to ask—staff members stayed hidden in the kitchen and avoided any interaction with guests. There was no sense of service, care, or accountability. What makes this especially frustrating is the contrast with my previous visit. It’s sad to see how much the property has declined. I rarely leave negative reviews, but I felt compelled to share our experience.

This was the second stay for us at the Hotel Santa Maria Novella. All that we loved about it the first time we enjoyed again. The staff is very friendly and helpful, the breakfast is very good, the bar is fantastic, the location is fabulous for walking around the core area of Florence. While we did get an upgrade with a sitting area, the room was a bit dark, but our kids' room was very bright with a great view as was the case with our first visit. We would definitely return on our next trip to Firenze!
