Gardenia Room on Tropical Lush Farm in Haiku, Maui with Private Soak Pool
The Gardenia Room is located on the lower level of our Ohana House. Guests have a private entrance to a comfortable king-size bed & a twin bed. Floor-to-ceiling windows look out onto the beautiful lush garden spaces and water feature with a beautiful private pool for dipping in & cooling off. The room includes a mini-fridge, microwave, hot water kettle, & private full bath. Guests also have access to our sixty-foot saltwater pool, large hot tub looking over the ocean, sauna, and shared kitchen.
Our eco-retreat center is situated in the lush tropical rainforest of north shore Maui in Haiku, making our property the perfect location for growing organic fruits and vegetables. The land is bathed in ocean trade winds and negative ions from the 150-foot waterfall just below us. We offer an alternative Maui experience in comparison to the leeward side resorts and are the perfect mid-point stay for a road to Hana journey.
The center's buildings are situated along the cliffside of a seven-acre property. The Gardenia room is on the ground floor of the Ohana House, just a short walk to the shared: pool, hot tub, sauna, and kitchen.
Hale Akua is a magical and idyllic place created and designed to provide a natural and supportive environment for groups, couples, families, and individuals to relax, renew, and restore well-being.
Guests have access to the eco-retreat facilities which include the large saltwater pool, hot tub overlooking the ocean, kitchen, and dining area. Guests can also get guidance on what is great to visit by looking through our guidebook in their room or asking for help at the office.
Office is open Mon - Sun from 9am - 5pm. We also provide an after-hours phone if you need anything outside these hours. Upon your booking, we provide you with a Welcome Booklet that includes local recommendations and anything else you may be wondering about before and during your stay.
Note: Please keep in mind, our center is a rustic compound in the middle of the jungle. We do have de-humidifiers and air purifiers in every room. We are centered in a tropical rainforest with many weird and wonderful insect species. We only use natural pesticides and cleaning chemicals on the property. As a result, we occasionally have more animal visitors. These may include geckos, ants, flying cockroaches, centipedes, cane spiders, and mice. We are in their natural habitat, so we will not be able to refund any portion of your stay for these house guests.
The price listed includes cleaning fees and extra coffee, tea, and cream if needed in the room. Extra cleanings can be ordered. Also, a washer/dryer is right next to the room where guests can do their laundry.

The solar electric system at Hale Akua currently consists of 200 solar panels, 12 inverters, and 24 solar batteries. Our founder Lori Grace has invested in this system to prevent unnecessary contributions to climate change. This solar electric system will add another two days of electricity, provided there has been an adequate amount of sunlight charge before an electrical outage. We also have 10 Eco-Flow batteries (3kw electricity per room) which can add two to three days of electricity if needed. Learning to live on limited electricity is a wonderful and necessary education for our current climate situation. We would like for all our guests to learn to work together with our staff in these situations. Large hotels here on Maui that experience an electrical failure do not provide backup power, nor do they offer refunds. As we do not feel responsible for Hawaiian Electricâs failures, there will be an opportunity for education rather than a refund if we have an outage, and our staff will assist you the best they can.
The directions to this jungle cottage were atrocious despite some clear landmarks. In a VRBO rental, we expect a kitchen. There was no kitchen. There was no lighting and the entry way was treacherous. We had a 3 night rental and left after one night. The de-humidifier in the room warned of "tripping" a circuit breaker behind the head board of the bed. The window shades were not secured and flapped all night. There were two other entrances to our "living area" that accessed other "living areas" in the building. No confidence in a secure stay.
This was a rural location. It seems it is more geared to group retreats. Greeting was kind. It was just 2 of us. Not sure why I expected in room cooking. Iâm sure it was my misunderstanding. It was a shared kitchen facility for ALL site guests. We like to prepare our own meals rather than eat out. Our only distress was an experience at the hot tub and sauna - we were enjoying the tub and a couple came to get in and were completely naked ⊠much to our surprise - but itâs probably because we are old school and modest. . We did have a relaxing stay at this rural setting but will probably choose a different location for future trips.
If youâre looking to get away from the tourist centers and spend some time connecting with nature and your spouse/partner - this is the place! Tucked away in the green foothills of the east, this place provides you with an opportunity to disconnect and relax. Pool, hot tub and sauna ensure you have the tools necessary to do that. We cooked our own meals both nights since restaurants were a bit far. Hikes exist around the area. If youâre looking for a beach, itâs probably 20 minutes away to the north and definitely for experienced surfers only. This is more of a relaxing mountainside retreat.
We loved our stay at the eco resort. The Gardenia Room was perfect oasis and the grounds were beautiful and lush. We canât wait to go back! Highly recommend for anyone wanting a rainforest / serene stay on Maui.
this place is amazing! a little hidden gem off the road to hana, it has all of the appeal of being tucked away and secluded while still being incredibly accessible. the property that the room sits on is stunning, with plenty of crops, sweeping views, and even a waterfall! you have to stay here to experience it.
The location was so peaceful. The room was such a nice break from the larger resorts. They were very accommodating to my last minute late check in as well.
Amazing stay! We loved our room. The private patio with a soaking pool was our garden of eden. We enjoyed having coffee every morning while geckos were playing around the garden. The gentle breeze would swing the palm tree, but the patio is soo well protected from wind that it felt very calm. The swinging palm was a reminder of how alive the garden was. It was the most romantic stay we've experienced.
The room is fantastic. The indoor/outdoor shower was odd at first - until you turn on the water, and have the most pleasant shower experience of your life!
The shared kitchen was nice and well equipped.
The property was little empty when we were there, and that felt really good to us.
The fresh farm produce is sooo yummy!!
We will be back there again. Word of advice: look for rooms on their own website, as they have more than what is posted here.
