Want to know more about the history or our area?
Catskill Stream is snuggled into an area so rich in history, where legend begat fact, that the neighborhood adds another layer of wonder to an already stunning setting.
It was this immediate area of Palenville that Washington Irving borrowed in 1819 for the setting for the epic slumber and awakening of "Rip Van Winkle," drawing the then-young country's attention to the area. A few years later, the first of the pioneering artists of what became known as the Hudson River School of painting were pulled here, too.
Thomas Cole, Kaaterskill Thomas Cole, The Falls of the Kaaterskill, 1826
The young Thomas Cole first visited here in 1825, to sketch nearby Kaaterskill Falls and other spots. The paintings he made from those sketches moved many other artists to flock to the area to try to capture it's awe-inspiring beauty, not only on canvas but also in poetry and prose.
Their glorious works, widely reproduced in the major periodicals of the day, attracted so many visitors that they in turn spurred the popularity of grand mountaintop hotels, which became favored destinations for all the giants of the 19th and early 20th century.
The famed Catskill Mountain House, in 1823 the first resort in America, was as legendary in its time as any playground of the famous and powerful today. The Mountain House, and the others that followed, like the Hotel Kaaterskill and the Laurel House, attracted Twain, Sherman, Presidents Arthur and Grant, along with nobility and notables from all over the world.
This is the real Catskill Mountains, not the vacation areas in the foothills to the southeast that long ago misappropriated the name. The justly famed Kaaterskill Falls, the tallest in New York State, rendered and made famous by all the major Hudson River School artists, is no more than four miles up the road!
The Mountain House, Hotel Kaaterskill and the Laurel House, widely-famed landmarks in their day, are all gone now. The depression of the 1930's, fire, and the march of time eventually brought their reign to the end, and the once imposing structures demolished. But the scenery is now even more sublime since the area has reverted to its natural state, and manmade structures no longer interfere.
"Kindred Spirits" (Cole & Bryant) by Asher Durand
Asher Durand, who bought one of Thomas Cole's original three paintings of the region, painted this tribute to his friends William Cullen Bryant and Cole after the latter's passing. It shows his interpretation of a spot in the Kaaterskill Clove, borrowing various features from different locations. It is regarded as a defining work of the Hudson River School.

Enjoying the Catskills and the Hudson Valley
It's a wonderful place to stay, and Lea, one of the owners, is a caring and kind host who treated us also with self-made brownies. She made me, my brother and sister-in-law feel welcome. The location couldn't have been better for hiking tours and also at rainy days to visit Hyde Park, the Roosevelt estate. I would only add that this apartment only sleeps three adults comfortably, the second room is too small. We enjoyed our evenings around the kitchen table but there is no "living room". It would be helpful to have more light in the small hallway to see the thermostat. In total we had a lovely time and can recommend this place!

July 4th Family Vacation
We had an amazing time at Lea and Jeff's place. The place is exactly the way it is described and the pictures really portray the property. This was our first family vacation as a family of four. It was conveniently located to North-South Lake and we spent our days playing in the water and the sand. But you don't even need to drive to find a place to cool off, there is water hole on the block to swim and walk in the river. Thanks to Lea's recommendation, one of the highlights of our trip was to go to Story Farms for feeding time. Our toddler loved watching the cows being fed and milked. This was a perfect relaxing city getaway and we hope to come back again.

Sweet Times
Lea and Jeff (and their son, Will) are wonderful hosts. They make sure you have everything you need and far and beyond! The location is fabulous for close by swimming holes, easy trips up the mountain, and an easy and beautiful drive to Woodstock. It is also close to the upcoming Saugerties Village and the Hudson river. Hudson itself and the Olana estate is so easy to get to and well worth seeing.
The apartment is great, with two nice and light-filled bedrooms, and a spacious kitchen and eating area - a definite plus for longer stays as mine was.
The bed is the best. I want one just like that! And going to sleep to the gurgling stream is peaceful and adds to a good nights sleep.
The neighborhood is quiet with lovely evening walks to be had. Hawks and kingfishers abound as well as nesting storks close by. I have had a wonderful summer here and look forward to returning. Thanks Lea, Jeff, and Will for everything. You have been so very kind to me and I am most grateful.

Very clean in an excellent area.
We enjoyed our quiet stay. This is a very old historic area and the upstairs unit is very clean,a little crooked but that is to be expected in a house in this era. The only downside was the lack of good internet and TV would not work.

Clean and cozy spot with excellent access to parks and town
We stayed for father's Day weekend and had a great time. Kaaterskill creek and falls are within a short walk. Hunter mountain and the park are a short drive as is the dining of Saugerties, Woodstock and Catskill. This 2nd floor apartment has all the kitchen and bathing necessities and is furnished comfortably. A great value. Lea, Jeff and their son Will were very accommodating.

Great place, friendly and helpful hosts
Accommodations were cute as can be and it was lovely to have coffee, fruit there on arrival and pastries next day! Right across from a lovely little stream with a swimming hole right there. Kids enjoyed jumping off a little ledge into the water, which was, let's say, refreshing! It was early June., with water coming down from the mountains.
We'll be back!

Nice place in a nice location
Apartment was in a really nice spot. No more than 15-20 mins to either north/south lake (hiking, swimming, boating, fishing) or Woodstock. Kaaterskill falls also right up the street. Apartment was clean and comfortable and Lea was very accommodating......Plenty of tips on where to go. We spent most of our time on the lake or in the local swimming holes. Overall, we had a great time.
